On this four-year, joint honors course you will develop your language and cultural knowledge of German to degree level alongside core units in civil and common law – the world’s most prominent legal systems. The course is structured to help you think, write, reason, and argue like an international lawyer while gaining a rich understanding of the German language, linguistics, literature, history, and culture. It will also help you develop key skills in research and analysis.

Digital technologies drive economic growth, yet create new cyber risks demanding ever more sophisticated solutions. There is worldwide demand for new and innovative approaches to tackle global cyber-threats specific to large-scale infrastructures, from energy production to finance through to healthcare and smart transportation. The cyber security of such infrastructures is paramount – their disruption can have large-scale impacts on society as well as massive business losses. There is a major shortage of cyber security professionals globally, and the specialist nature of critical infrastructures makes the problem even more acute.

A strong ethos of rigorous experimental and empirical cyber security research underpins the MSc, facilitated by a state-of-the-art testbed for studying critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and Internet of Things (IoT) security, and bespoke teaching equipment. You’ll learn to apply foundational cyber security techniques to infrastructure and will develop the skills for engineering scalable solutions. You'll be exposed to real-world problems that are practical and challenge-oriented, but underpinned by rigorous research.

This MSc aims to:

• Enable a deep understanding of fundamental concepts, design principles, building blocks and methods to understand and mitigate against cyber security threats;
• Give you hands-on experience of working with devices, systems and networks utilised in realistic infrastructure environments;
• Equip you with the ability to apply security principles and technical knowledge to analyse complex real-world infrastructures systems (including software systems, networks, control systems and IoT) to identify potential security issues and solutions;
• Provide you with the skills to reason critically about complex problems that require evaluation and analysis from a multi-dimensional perspective including technical, human and organisational aspects.

This program examines and deploys perspectives from feminism, gender studies, cultural studies and sexuality studies, along with interdisciplinary research in international political economy, civil–military relations, international development and the study of men and masculinities.

This course provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of computer science. There are extensive opportunities to specialise in a range of advanced areas while gaining skills in system development and enterprise. We review our curriculum constantly to ensure it remains at the leading edge.

Core ideas are introduced in years one and two. You will cover the principles of algorithms and programming, covering three key paradigms: imperative, functional and object-oriented.

You will study mathematics and statistics underpinning modern computer science; how a modern computer architecture is organised; concurrent systems and networks; and foundations of human-computer interaction, cybersecurity and theoretical and data-driven computer science.

A key component of year two is the software group project in which you work in a team to develop an application for a real-world client with help from an industrial mentor.

In your final two years you will choose from a wide range of optional units in order to specialise in selected advanced areas of computer science. You will undertake a significant group project working with industrial mentors. You will also conduct an individual project, co-created with a supervising member of staff, with opportunities to work with industrial and research partners.

Theoretical physics aims to understand and predict phenomena in the physical world based on a conceptual and mathematical understanding of the laws of the universe.

This course includes topics such as quantum physics, quantum information, relativistic field theory and condensed matter physics. Our MSci Theoretical Physics degree incorporates a greater level of mathematics and theory with less laboratory work than MSci Physics.

You will join a friendly department with a very active, award-winning student society. Many theoretical physics graduates pursue further academic research then progress to careers in research and teaching. The problem solving and mathematical skills you can gain during this degree are highly valued in finance, IT and management, as well as a wide range of other careers.

This pathway is designed for those with an interest in teaching and learning and working with learners in educational settings across the sector. It is particularly suitable if you already hold master's-level credits from a teaching qualification, such as a PGCE, and want to build on this foundation for your professional development.

In common with other MSc Education students, you will take the compulsory research methods unit, Introduction to Educational Inquiry, and write a dissertation. You will also take the compulsory unit, Contemporary Perspectives in Learning, which is core to your pathway. You can choose the rest of your units from across the programs offered by the school. Your final choice of units will be made after consulting with tutors so that your choice is as coherent and useful as possible, as well as suiting your individual needs.

If you love the challenge of thinking through a maths question and the satisfaction of having solved a difficult problem, but also appreciate the applications of mathematics in areas of physics and want access to the exciting and specialised subjects offered by the School of Physics, then this four-year, joint honours course can offer you both.

Your mathematics study will focus on the areas of applied mathematics that are most linked to physics, such as the mathematical modelling of physical problems, quantum mechanics and random matrix theory. You will also cover a range of topics in physics, such as special relativity, electromagnetism and superconductors.
