Overview
This course provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of computer science. There are extensive opportunities to specialise in a range of advanced areas while gaining skills in system development and enterprise. We review our curriculum constantly to ensure it remains at the leading edge.
Core ideas are introduced in years one and two. You will cover the principles of algorithms and programming, covering three key paradigms: imperative, functional and object-oriented.
You will study mathematics and statistics underpinning modern computer science; how a modern computer architecture is organised; concurrent systems and networks; and foundations of human-computer interaction, cybersecurity and theoretical and data-driven computer science.
A key component of year two is the software group project in which you work in a team to develop an application for a real-world client with help from an industrial mentor.
In your final two years you will choose from a wide range of optional units in order to specialise in selected advanced areas of computer science. You will undertake a significant group project working with industrial mentors. You will also conduct an individual project, co-created with a supervising member of staff, with opportunities to work with industrial and research partners.

Master of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Study Abroad
One of the broadest engineering disciplines, electrical and electronic engineering uses cutting-edge technology to address some of the major concerns of the modern world. There is growing demand for skilled graduates to work in industries such as consumer electronics, alternative energy and transport, medical engineering, and communications.
This course provides full accreditation for the qualification of Chartered Engineer. Entry is by transfer from year two of the MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering subject to satisfactory performance.

In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history of film and television, considering theoretical perspectives and appreciating how films are made. You will also engage in practical filmmaking.

Master of Science in Cancer Biology and Immunology
Our MSci course is ideal if you want to continue in research or to stand out when applying for a PhD.
In your first year you will gain a broad understanding of the biology of normal and cancerous cells. In addition to studying the immune system, you will take pathology, microbiology and biochemistry units.
In the second year you will study the cellular and molecular basis of cancer and its therapy as well as autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes and arthritis, and human cancers caused by viruses, such as papilloma and hepatitis B. You will take molecular genetics and an optional unit, possibly biochemistry or pharmacology, from a selection offered by other schools.
All practical teaching in years one and two is supported by the eBiolabs dynamic laboratory manual.
You will progress to undertake a research project or scientific dissertation, working in a research group in our Biomedical Sciences building or in one of the surrounding hospitals. Your work may even be published in scientific literature.
The additional, fourth year includes an extended research project and advanced research skills training with an emphasis on enterprise. You will plan projects, communicate with a variety of audiences and learn to translate and commercialise research.

Master of Science in Environmental Modelling and Data Analysis
Numerical models and satellite observation are fundamental to understanding environmental systems and change. The MSc in Environmental Modelling and Data Analysis will provide you with the skills to go on to a career in this exciting area. You will learn how models of environmental processes are developed and applied across a range of areas including climate change, flooding, biogeochemistry and glaciers. You will gain an appreciation of all aspects of environmental modelling ranging from the philosophy of model development, focussing on links to observations and uncertainty analysis, through to more practical aspects such as numerical approximation and algorithm development and testing.
The programme has close links to its twin MSc in Geographical Data Science and Spatial Analytics, which allows students to develop skills in Geographical Information Systems, analysis of satellite observations and Data Science techniques more widely. This will be complimented by hands-on teaching aimed at developing your coding skills in scientific programming and high-performance computing (with access to Bristol’s unique supercomputing facilities).
The MSc is taught by world-leading researchers from the School’s Hydrology, Glaciology and Earth System Modelling research groups. This course allows you to combine two historically interlinked disciplines and develop a breadth of skills across both economics and philosophy.
The economics part of the course is technically rigorous and will build your analytical skills. There are mandatory units in macro- and microeconomics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics (the application of statistical methods to data to estimate economic models).
