This genuinely interdisciplinary program offers an innovative way of studying medieval culture and society. As a student, you will benefit from research-led teaching and skills-based training across a wide variety of disciplines, including history, literature, languages, manuscript studies, music, religion and classics.

At Bristol, you have access to one of the most active centres for medieval studies in the UK, comprising more than 30 staff members and approximately 20 postgraduate research students (MPhil/PhD) each year, who together form a lively and dynamic interdisciplinary community.

Every year, the Centre for Medieval Studies hosts a large number of research seminars, lectures and public talks. Staff who teach on the program are members of the Centre, and many have an international reputation in their respective fields.

Beyond the University, you can draw on the important archival, architectural and heritage resources of the city of Bristol – the medieval gateway to Europe – and the south-west region more widely. Through our placement and practice-led project options you have the unique opportunity to gain practical work experience with one of the University's partners in the cultural and heritage industries, training you as a professional medievalist with transferable skills for careers within and beyond academia.

In the Department of Film and Television you will explore the history of film and television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners. You will consider theoretical perspectives, appreciate how films are made and engage in practical filmmaking activities.

Throughout your studies you will learn from a range of film and television professionals and in your final year you will have the chance to undertake a placement in the creative industries.

For the English part of your course you will study a broad range of literature written in English from the medieval period to the present day. This will include the close, analytical study of poetry, fiction and drama, as well as critical and theoretical approaches to studying literature.

In your second and third years you will choose from a range of stimulating options and research-led special subjects including creative writing. In your third year you have the opportunity to write a dissertation on a topic of your own choosing.

Migration needs new thinking. The MSc in Migration and Mobility Studies offers a rigorous and exciting approach to the study of migration and its connections to other types of human movement. You will learn about migrant workers and global firms, migratory soundscapes and the relation between migration and racialisation.

Through its innovative combination of arts, social sciences, law and humanities, the MSc will enable you to understand and engage with some of the most pressing political and policy issues of our time.

The program will:

• Enable you to think critically about migration and migration policies: explore how to think about and work on human movement without turning migration into a problem;

This degree combines theatre with the study of German. The course offers an enriching experience with exciting intellectual challenges and a wide range of options that will allow you to pursue your own interests.

The theatre course will allow you to develop your understanding and practical skills by exploring critical and historical frameworks alongside practical workshops. There are opportunities to engage with professional theatre makers and our museum-accredited archive, the Theatre Collection.

For German, as well as following a structured language course, you will build your practical skills and explore critical and historical frameworks through literature, history, thought, politics, linguistics and culture. When you return to Bristol for your final year you will have the opportunity to undertake an independent practical or written research project and/or a work placement in the creative industries.

Studying a combination of history of art and Russian offers an enriching experience with exciting intellectual challenges. It provides a valuable skill set that is ideally tailored to an increasingly globalised workplace.

Alongside history of art, your Russian studies will introduce you to a linguistic and cultural tradition encompassing some of Europe's most important writers, literary and cinematic developments, and ideological trends.

You will study a combination of language, art history and culture units, spending your third year abroad in a Russian-speaking country on a study or work placement. While abroad, you will refine your skills in your chosen language along with your cultural understanding.

Renamed for 2021, this established course will give you an understanding of how organisations and managers operate in a global environment while developing analytical, problem-solving and interpersonal skills that are attractive to employers. You will learn about management practice, organisation theory and the global business environment, as well as specific functions like finance and marketing. Our wide range of optional units means you will be able to personalise your degree to reflect your interests and career ambitions in areas such as strategy, business law and human resource management. 

Your first year will involve study of international business, accounting, finance, marketing, mathematics and statistics, providing you with a solid foundation on which to build, whichever aspect of business or management you choose as the focus of your studies.

During your second year we will help you to develop an understanding of research design, data collection and data analysis, including analysis of survey data, interviews and observation in organisations, in preparation for your final-year dissertation. This is a piece of individual research in which you can focus on a topic that stimulates your interest the most.

Alongside your preparation for, and production of, the dissertation, you will take other core and optional units during your second and final years.

This joint honours degree combines a full course in music with the study of French language, literature and culture.

Music offers a broad range of units in musicology, composition and performance across diverse styles and genres. These are complemented by weekly concerts, regular masterclasses and performances in the department and opportunities to get involved in the dynamic music scene in the city of Bristol. French is the first language of some 90 million speakers around the world. Francophone countries offer diverse and stimulating cultures for study and the importance of French in European business and diplomacy makes knowledge of the language and associated culture both necessary and rewarding. 

You will spend your third year abroad in a French-speaking environment, which will enable you to refine your language skills and cultural knowledge.

You will be taught by internationally recognised musicologists and composers and by a team of professional instrumental and vocal tutors. Our teaching and music-making takes place in the magnificent 19th-century Victoria Rooms, a familiar Bristol landmark with a 530-seat auditorium.
