Overview

This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to use numbers and data within social policy. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours BSc Social Policy course, where you will acquire core knowledge in your subject. You will focus on key issues such as inequality, risk, need, and the social processes and institutions that enhance or impair wellbeing. You will draw on social, political and economic theory to analyse and explore these in a global context.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured. Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis and enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in year three.

MSci Chemistry with Industrial Experience will deepen your understanding of the subject and prepare you for a variety of career options, especially in the chemical industry. It is also a good pathway into postgraduate study.

The first two years are common to all of our degree courses. You will study fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry and applications in areas such as analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry.

You will develop your ability to design experiments and interpret results and learn key skills through our chemistry-specific communications and mathematics units.

In your third year you will gain invaluable experience in industry working in a paid position for a major chemical company. Our students have worked for AstraZeneca, Bayer Crop Science, Croda, GlaxoSmithKline and Johnson Matthey in recent years.

Working in industry will allow you to develop real-world expertise and specialise in an area of science that you find interesting. The transferable skills that you gain will prove invaluable in helping to shape your future career.

Your final year includes a 20-week research project in which you will work with an academic member of staff and their research team on a current challenge in chemistry.

This distinctive and exciting program integrates film-making practice with textual and historical approaches to the study of film and television. As a student on this innovative course, you will engage with critical and theoretical perspectives and develop high-level skills of analysis. The Department of Film and Television hosts a series of research seminars and industry talks designed to enrich your studies. Our facilities include two cinemas, production studios, animation and edit suites, seminar rooms and sound rooms.

Bristol is an excellent city in which to study film and television, with its varied cinema, television and digital media spaces, such as the Arnolfini, BBC Bristol, The Cube and Watershed media centre. In the Department of Film and Television you will explore the history of film and television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners. You will consider theoretical perspectives, appreciate how films are made and engage in practical filmmaking activities.

Throughout your studies you will learn from a range of film and television professionals and in your final year you will have the chance to undertake a placement in the creative industries.

For the English part of your course you will study a broad range of literature written in English from the medieval period to the present day. This will include the close, analytical study of poetry, fiction and drama, as well as critical and theoretical approaches to studying literature.

Natural Sciences & Mathematics

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Physics

The first year gives you a comprehensive grounding in chemistry, physics and mathematics. Later years focus on atomic and molecular science and its interdisciplinary applications.

You will focus on areas at the interface between chemistry and physics, with less organic and synthetic chemistry and more physical and non-synthetic inorganic chemistry. Similarly, there is very little nuclear and particle physics after your first year but an emphasis on materials science and nanoscience.

As well as lectures and practical classes, small-group tutorials and workshops help develop your understanding of challenging and exciting concepts. You will undertake a project or scientific dissertation, working in a research group with an academic.

The course is accredited by both the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Econometrics is the application of statistical methods to data to estimate economic models. It is used by economists to verify or disprove theories and analyse the impacts of policies and events on the health of the economy. This course combines the study of economics and econometrics with a wide range of optional units. 

Econometrics is a vital tool for economists because, unlike natural sciences, where controlled experiments are used to determine the effect of one thing on another, it is impossible to hold the economy constant while tinkering with a single variable. Econometrics provides the scientific means to overcome the issue using empirical observations.

Alongside mandatory modules in econometrics and the applied economics dissertation, you will select from a wide range of optional modules from within the Schools of Economics, Finance and Management during all three years of your degree.

The Study Abroad course extends your degree to four years, with your third year spent studying economics in English at a top-ranking university in Europe or farther afield before returning to Bristol for your final year. This course allows you to combine the challenging, broad academic content of all our economics degrees with an overseas dimension that reflects the international nature of the economy.

One of the broadest engineering disciplines, electrical and electronic engineering uses cutting-edge technology to address some of the major concerns of the modern world. Numerical models and satellite observation are fundamental to understanding environmental systems and change. The MSc in Environmental Modelling and Data Analysis will provide you with the skills to go on to a career in this exciting area. You will learn how models of environmental processes are developed and applied across a range of areas including climate change, flooding, biogeochemistry and glaciers. You will gain an appreciation of all aspects of environmental modelling ranging from the philosophy of model development, focussing on links to observations and uncertainty analysis, through to more practical aspects such as numerical approximation and algorithm development and testing.

The programme has close links to its twin MSc in Geographical Data Science and Spatial Analytics, which allows students to develop skills in Geographical Information Systems, analysis of satellite observations and Data Science techniques more widely. You can shape your degree to suit your interests; you could discover units like Complex Networks and Probability alongside your core modules, or choose optional vocational units like Financial Risk Management or Maths in Schools to prepare you for a particular career.

The curriculum currently includes opportunities to learn the statistical computing environment R, the Bayesian approach to estimation and prediction, and how to design powerful tests for statistical hypotheses.

The first year provides a broad background in pure, applied and statistical mathematics via a range of compulsory units. You'll cover material in lectures and small-group tutorials, with the freedom to explore a range of topics in collaboration with your personal tutor and fellow students.

From year two you will focus more on statistics and probability, although there is still scope to take some units from other areas.

As you move through the course you will gain academic independence, progressing from small-group tutorial teaching in year one to an independent statistics project in your final year.

This degree is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and you'll be automatically entitled to Graduate Statistician status on application to the RSS, provided you achieve at least a second class honours degree.
