This course combines subject specialism in childhood studies with interdisciplinary breadth, creative teamwork and entrepreneurial skills. Alongside your in-depth education in childhood studies you will apply your subject knowledge by translating ideas into plans for digital and creative enterprises, both social and commercial.

Childhood studies at Bristol provides you with a holistic understanding of children, childhood and adolescence, combining elements of education, psychology, law, social work and social policy. You will consider childhood in the contexts of families, peers and society at a national and international level. Topics of study include children’s rights, development, education, therapeutic work with children, safeguarding, youth justice, and disability in society.

You will come together with students from other innovation disciplines, such as computer science and management, each contributing a unique perspective on a challenge as you identify needs and develop ideas. Ultimately, you'll create innovative solutions together.

This course combines in-depth subject specialism in history with interdisciplinary breadth, creative teamwork and entrepreneurial skills. The course will equip you for researching and communicating history by treating you as a historian from day one. You will be supported in ‘doing’ history through a mix of core units, a wide choice of primary source-based optional units and substantial pieces of independent research. Small-group teaching, supported by lectures and workshops, facilitates student discussion and debate.

This degree combines theatre with the study of French, which is spoken by hundreds of millions of people around the world. The course offers an enriching experience with exciting intellectual challenges and a wide range of options that will allow you to pursue your own interests.

The theatre course will allow you to develop your understanding and practical skills by exploring critical and historical frameworks alongside practical workshops. There are opportunities to engage with professional theatre makers and our museum-accredited archive, the Theatre Collection.

For French, as well as following a structured language course, you will build your practical skills and explore critical and historical frameworks through literature, film, history, thought, politics, linguistics and culture. When you return to Bristol for your final year you will have the opportunity to undertake an independent practical or written research project and/or a work placement in the creative industries.

BSc Education Studies with Study Abroad explores how learning happens at all ages, from very young children to older adults. You will learn about education in a range of settings, from schools and universities to online communities, social movements, workplaces and care homes. You will develop expertise in UK education and will study education from global, international and comparative perspectives.

The course currently includes an optional placement unit, Education in Practice, where you can apply your learning and gain valuable workplace experience through a placement in a school, charitable organisation, business, museum, community group or research setting.

Social policy provides an exciting opportunity to critically analyse contemporary social issues related to human wellbeing, inequality, disadvantage and crime. This course takes an international and comparative perspective in many units, ensuring social policy is considered in its global context.

The first year introduces key concepts and ideologies and familiarises you with theoretical, comparative and historical analyses. It also develops your research skills as a social scientist. Year two develops conceptual frameworks further and deepens your understanding of research methods.

After the first year you can explore your interests in greater depth through a range of optional units focusing on contemporary political and social issues.

At the end of year two you will have the opportunity to study overseas at one of our partner institutions.
