The first two years of the course are identical to our single honours mathematics degrees, providing a broad background in pure, applied and statistical mathematics which underpins more advanced material later.

Year one consists of compulsory topics. In your second year you can start to shape your degree; choose from an extensive range of topics that most interest you.

Provided you fulfil progression requirements, you will spend your third year abroad at one of our partner universities. This course is different to 'with Study Abroad in a Modern Language' as you will study in English and are not required to learn a foreign language. On returning to Bristol you will complete your final year, choosing from a wide range of units from our MSci Mathematics course, and benefiting from our pioneering research.

One of the broadest engineering disciplines, electrical and electronic engineering uses cutting-edge technology to address some of the major concerns of the modern world. This course provides full accreditation for the qualification of Chartered Engineer. Entry is by transfer from year two of the MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering subject to satisfactory performance.

The MSc Innovation and Entrepreneurship will teach you how to apply your existing undergraduate degree knowledge in real-world business challenges appropriate to both starting and joining innovative organisations, including:

Sociology is a well established discipline, as relevant to the study of 21st-century societies as it is to the sweeping changes of the Industrial Revolution.

Sociologists are concerned with society’s structures, forms of action, and cultural practices and they are uniquely placed to understand the changes of social life. This course provides the academic and professional support needed for you to develop your own sociological imagination.

The first year provides a solid grounding in sociology, followed by a greater choice of units linked to staff research interests in subsequent years. Recently, these units have covered subjects such as culture, ethnicity, class, migration, modern slavery, popular music, racism and science.

There is a strong emphasis on research skills throughout, with compulsory units in the first two years. In your final year, you will conduct a piece of supervised sociological research on a topic of your choice that draws on these research skills.

This course allows you to combine subjects from the School of Economics and the School of Accounting and Finance with the benefit of one year abroad. 

The School of Accounting and Finance prepares you for a career in the accountancy profession or financial markets through access to subjects accredited by several professional accountancy bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Additionally, you will be prepared for a career as an economist, studying in a School of Economics run by world-leading experts.

This programme is designed for anyone involved in conceptualising or administering policies related to the Global Development Challenges. It is especially suitable if you are already involved in planning development strategies, currently working for non-governmental or governmental organisations in the development field or planning for a career in development.

The programme combines an intellectual and academic approach with policy-oriented and empirical studies of development. It addresses three separate, but related, facets of the development process:

• Analysing what development means;
• Studying the processes of planning (external aid, regional disparities, environmental factors, poverty and industrialisation);
• Examining how development policies may be delivered and administered, analysing the importance of effective political and bureaucratic structures, and evaluating the contributions of NGOs and other external bodies.

The MSc Business Analytics is a one-year specialist program for graduates with a bachelor’s degree with a substantial quantitative component, and highly qualified graduates from other backgrounds with demonstrable advanced quantitative skills. It will suit graduates or early career professionals who wish to pursue a career in business analytics across sectors including digital marketing, human resources, logistics, retail, banking, insurance and healthcare.

The MSc Business Analytics will equip students with the skills and ability to develop actionable insights on customer behaviour, market trends, and business opportunities based on data and statistical methods. Students will also gain an understanding of the strategic value and managerial implications of business analytics, in line with a socially responsible and ethical use of data.

You will learn statistical and machine learning techniques for data mining and forecasting, social media/web analytics, modelling analytics for data-driven decision making, linked to practice and theory.

You will gain a critical understanding of organisational, societal, and ethical issues in the use of business analytics in decision making and the development of data-driven business solutions.

The first two years provide a strong foundation in engineering, including mathematics, structures, soil and fluid mechanics, computing and surveying, as well as optional units.

Design is central to the course and this is reflected in the projects you will undertake. In the first year you will develop a solution to an open-ended problem, such as designing and making a model bridge.

The second year includes steel work, reinforced concrete and geotechnical design. Among other activities in the third year you will design a water supply system.

You will take part in an exciting group design project in the fourth year. This project combines all your learning as you tackle a realistic design challenge identified through our industry links.
