Overview
The programme provides intensive training in the neurosciences as they relate to the physiologic function and behaviour of the organism. It builds on the broad research strengths of recognised scientists, particularly in basic and clinical neuroscience, molecular and cell biology, neuroendocrinology, behaviour, neurodegeneration and stress. Guest lecturers from other universities bring their specialist and advanced knowledge to the programme.
Throughout the programme, basic principles will be taught and illustrated in the context of various brain diseases, including psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. A practical and a research project will give you valuable experience in experimental neuroscience, while tutorials and presentations will also help to develop your communication skills.
The MSc will appeal to graduates looking to progress to PhD study as well as those with medical training who want to diversify into research. You could also move on to a career in industry, the health service, science communication or clinical trials coordination.

In your first year you will gain a broad understanding of biomedical science and take units in microbiology and diseases caused by microorganisms. In addition to learning about the immune system, you will also study pathology and biochemistry.
In year two you will study the cellular and molecular basis of human diseases caused by microorganisms, such as shigella and tuberculosis, and viruses. As well as learning about the immune response to a variety of infectious microbes, you will investigate how bacteria acquire antibiotic resistance.

In your final year you will take three infection units and an optional unit. You will also undertake a research project or scientific dissertation working in a research group either within the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine or in one of the surrounding hospitals. This joint honours degree focuses on the place of religion in society, both in the present and in the past. You will acquire a solid foundation in several religious traditions. In sociology there is particular emphasis on sociological theory and its application to real-world concerns, including issues of ethnicity, beliefs and multiculturalism.
