Master of Science in Robotics

at University of Bristol - Clifton Campus United Kingdom

Overview

The MSc in Robotics will provide you with the ability to understand, design and implement modern robotic systems. Robotics is increasingly prominent in a variety of sectors (eg manufacturing, health and remote exploration of hostile environments such as space and the deep sea) and as autonomous and semi-autonomous systems that interact with people physically and socially.

This program exposes you to a wide range of advanced engineering and computer science concepts, and offers the opportunity to carry out a practical robot project at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, one of the UK's most comprehensive robotics innovation facilities and a leading centre of robotics research.

The program is jointly awarded and jointly delivered by the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, both based in Bristol, and therefore draws on the combined expertise, facilities and resources of the two universities. The Bristol Robotics Laboratory is a collaborative research partnership between the two universities with a vision to transform robotics by pioneering advances in autonomous robot systems that can behave intelligently with minimal human supervision.

The MA Chinese-English Audiovisual Translation is designed to prepare students to work in the fast-growing audiovisual sector of the language industries. The driver for industry growth is the ubiquitous availability of video content. Audiovisual translation accounts for up to a third of language services activity both in China and internationally.

The program focuses on technological competence and practical skills building in a range of audiovisual translation modes. The program also offers a broader grounding in key concepts and audiovisual industry dynamics. Students build their core skills through compulsory units in applied translation, CAT tools, translation theory and concepts in audiovisual translation. They can then take options in subtitling, videogame localization, introduction to specialised translation or translation and international film distribution. Students can do a research-based or a practice-based dissertation; the dissertation must be on a topic related to audiovisual translation.

Tutors include specialists in translation technologies, videogame localization and subtitling. Bristol is a UNESCO City of Film and film and media culture is very lively here. Bristol is also a hub for game developers and publishers. The training offered by the program is practical and industry-oriented in nature.

The study of identity is a burgeoning area of sociological and cultural studies. Over a range of units, this programme provides an introduction to key themes in this field, with identity explored in both theoretical and substantive ways.

On the one hand, there has been an exciting and innovative strand of work that explores and re-theorises the ideas of subjectivity and selfhood in the context of changes brought about by late modern and postmodern society. On the other, the question of identity has come under scrutiny within substantive areas of sociology, such as the sociology of race and ethnicity, the sociology of religion and the sociology of gender relations.

There are also important discussions concerning the ways in which identities are recorded and observed, including debates over new narrative and other qualitative methodologies.

The sociology half of the degree places particular emphasis on sociological theory and its application to real-world concerns covering topics such as consumption, the environment, modern slavery, risk and food. Sociology also provides an opportunity to develop your research skills. The philosophy element offers you a thorough understanding of philosophy including logic and critical thinking, epistemology and metaphysics and a range of other units including ethics and political philosophy.

The wide-ranging, flexible curriculum provides progressive intellectual challenges and consolidates your experience throughout.

This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to use numbers and data within sociology. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours sociology course. You will study society’s structures, forms of action and cultural practices, and understand changes in social life. You will gain a thorough grounding in sociology, as well as opportunities to specialise in new areas of research conducted by academics at the forefront of the discipline.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured.

Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis.

This four-year course has the same basic structure as BSc Geography but you will spend your third year studying geography and other subjects at an English-speaking university abroad.

In year one you receive an overview of human and physical geography, and develop a range of geographical and scientific skills. The remaining years are organised around specialist units from human and/or physical geography.

Physical geography units cover three broad areas: glaciology, hydrology and environmental change. Human geography units provide in-depth study of cultural, economic and social geography, emphasising the importance of theory and methods for analysing contemporary geographical problems and policies. Topics range from economic development and global politics to inequalities of health and contemporary social theory.

You will also develop skills in the use of specialised computer software, statistics and data collection in the field. Field trips and practical work are key components of the course. There are UK residential trips in year one and in year two there is an overseas field trip.

Your third-year studies abroad will be arranged on an individual basis. We currently have exchange agreements with universities in the US, Canada, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. Visit Global Opportunities to find out more about where you can study abroad.

The skills that you acquire throughout your studies will be applied in a self-directed dissertation project in your final year.
