This course is ideal for students interested in learning how to use numbers and data within sociology. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours BSc Sociology course. You will study society’s structures, forms of action and cultural practices, and understand changes in social life. You will gain a thorough grounding in sociology, as well as opportunities to specialise in new areas of research conducted by academics at the forefront of the discipline.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured.

Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis and enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in year three.

This MA builds on these outstanding research strengths. It is intended for graduates of philosophy or mathematics who wish to study logic and philosophy of mathematics. The programme includes taught units in the Department of Philosophy and the School of Mathematics.

This four-year degree combines years one, two and four of our MEng Aerospace Engineering with the chance to spend your third year at an English-speaking partner university overseas.

The first two years cover underpinning material organised into three streams:

• Aerodynamics
• Dynamics and control
• Structures and materials.

You will also learn skills that cross all three streams, such as computing, systems engineering and design.

You will rejoin the course in Bristol for your final year and will choose from a range of topics. Some options relate to particular application areas, such as helicopter aerodynamics, space systems or wind power. Others study particular technologies, such as composites analysis and experimental aerodynamics, or you can choose to undertake a research project.

This degree combines the challenging, broad academic content of all our courses with an overseas dimension that reflects the multinational nature of the modern aerospace industry.

You will explore the full range of plant biology, from enzymes to ecosystems. You will gain knowledge of the diversity, evolution and function of plants and of the latest developments in functional genomics, bioinformatics, plant developmental biology, plant pathology, parasite biology, cell signalling, pollination biology, ecology, plant conservation and systems biology.

Econometrics is the application of statistical methods to data to estimate economic models. It is used by economists to verify or disprove theories and analyse the impacts of policies and events on the health of the economy. This course combines the study of economics and econometrics with a wide range of optional units.

Econometrics is a vital tool for economists because, unlike natural sciences, where controlled experiments are used to determine the effect of one thing on another, it is impossible to hold the economy constant while tinkering with a single variable. Econometrics provides the scientific means to overcome the issue using empirical observations.

Alongside additional mandatory modules in econometrics and the applied economics dissertation, you will be able to select from a wide range of optional modules from the Schools of Economics, Finance and Management during all three years of your degree.

Law is a global profession. An understanding of more than one legal system, language, and culture can open up a world of opportunity. 

On this four-year, joint honors course you will develop your language and cultural knowledge of France and the Francophone world to degree level alongside core units in civil and common law – the world’s most prominent legal systems. This course enables you to pursue a career in the accounting profession with the benefit of a year in industry. It provides access to subjects accredited by professional accountancy bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Alternatively, you may pursue a career in finance or investment banking through our finance-oriented courses.

This is a four-year course underpinned by theory and practice. It aims to foster collaboration and creative thinking in the use of case studies. 

During your placement year you will undertake a paid placement within the accounting function of a large organisation or within an accountancy firm. Previously, students have secured roles at PwC, Grant Thornton, Hazlewoods, and Milsted Langdon. 

Places on the course are allocated on merit depending on first-year examination results and an offer of employment for your placement from a qualifying employer. You can work towards your professional accreditation with ICAEW during your placement year.

Epidemiology is the study of disease and health outcomes in populations. It is about finding causes—the reasons why some people become ill, and the reasons why some populations are healthier than others—and what we can do to remove or control these causes. It is the science underpinning public health, clinical research and healthcare evaluation. The MSc in Epidemiology will enable you to engage with the complex population health challenges facing the global community in future decades, providing high-quality training in epidemiological methods that are applicable to low-, middle- and high-income settings. The programme is suitable for students from both clinical and non-clinical backgrounds.

The MSc will introduce the principles of modern epidemiology and its role in public health and other health-related disciplines.
