You’ll be part of an active, research-focused, postgraduate-only community; the largest photonics group in the UK. You'll also have a rare opportunity to see firsthand how fibres are made, as we’re one of only a handful of universities with optical fibre production facilities.

During this MSc degree, you'll make photonic components and devices in our new 1,200m2 cleanroom complex. This is the largest multidisciplinary cleanroom of its type in the UK.

You'll gain practical insights into how to run a modern photonics business through our Industrial Showcase Week. During the week you’ll visit several businesses and learn from experienced photonics business leaders how to apply research and engineering skills to real-world problems.

With climate change challenging our conservation efforts, now is the time to play a role in the future of conservation by studying our MRes Wildlife Conservation course. We’re the only university in the UK offering a Masters of Research in close collaboration with a conservation organisation.

Studying this Masters of Research gives you the opportunity to complete a research project in a real and very critical cause; conserving wildlife and their supporting ecosystems. Our wildlife degree in research is designed to give you the professional and research skills to either study a PhD or become a conservation biologist. 

During your studies, you’ll be based at the Science and Learning Centre at Marwell Wildlife where you’ll be considered part of the team. You’ll learn the foundations in advanced field research with access to their top of the range research equipment.  

You’ll be able to apply your research skills to immediate use during a 10-day trip to Kenya, which is covered as part of the course fees. You’ll collect data and report your findings to stakeholders giving you real-life work experience of a conservation biologist working in Africa.  

As part of this course you'll be given a choice of independent research projects to complete. This could take you from the local eco-systems in the UK, to the ranches of Kenya, or the mountains of Tunisia. The selection changes every year.

Students previous projects have looked at the following subjects: 

• Conservation grazing and its effect on local biodiversity
• Re-introducing species, considering the effect of climate change
• Evolution of species behaviour whilst in captivity
• Management of large herbivores, considering socio-economic constraints

Infuse your Electronic Engineering studies with the science and technology of light. Photonics engineering has many applications, from broadband internet to precision medical and industrial tools. It’s also vital for new technologies such as quantum and photonic computing, which uses photons for ultra-fast, energy-efficient data processing. This accredited degree will give you access to professional registration as a Chartered Engineer.

On this 4-year, integrated master's, you'll train in the fundamentals of electronic engineering. This will provide a basis for your specialist photonics studies. You'll choose from a huge range of specialist modules, covering the latest advances in areas such as :

This MEng Electronic Engineering with Photonics degree is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Actuaries are the world’s financial architects and engineers. Their expertise is vital to the management of pension funds, general insurance companies and investment by financial institutions. On this course you’ll learn how to tackle the uncertainties of future events using mathematics, probability and statistics to create models and simulations. This degree will provide you with the technical skills needed for a career as an actuary.

The BSc Mathematics with Actuarial Science degree combines a programme of maths with key topics from economics, finance and actuarial science. You’ll investigate the applications of mathematics in a variety of contexts.

As part of this course you’ll:

This degree is accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). You'll be eligible for 6 exemptions from the core principles:

This is the maximum number of IFoA actuarial exemptions available on any undergraduate programme.

The Amputation and Prosthetic Rehabilitation MSc is a flexible programme of higher-level study suitable for both clinicians and non-clinicians who would like to work in this field. Learn about a patient’s journey from pre-amputation to prosthetic rehabilitation, exploring the physical and psychological aspects of patient care.

This course is subject to revalidation.

This course is a great way to improve your specialist knowledge if you already work, or would like to work, in this area. It’s ideal for multidisciplinary healthcare professionals from backgrounds such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, engineering, nursing and other related professions.

You’ll explore contemporary issues related to limb loss, and develop expertise in research, clinical practice and commerce. This will involve studying a wide range of current issues facing the delivery of amputation and prosthetic rehabilitation in a variety of different settings, including:

• Adult and children’s services within the NHS and other healthcare organisations
• Global issues related to limb loss and access to prosthetic service
• Prosthetic componentry and the prosthetic industry
• Charity settings across different sectors
• Engagement in occupations
• Exercise and paralympic sport

The course is delivered by healthcare rehabilitation experts whose amputation and prosthetics research is helping to develop the field. It also looks at the perspectives of patients, families, carers and clinicians taking a person-centred approach.

Our Amputee Rehabilitation and Prosthetic Use module is endorsed by the British Association of Chartered Physiotherapist in Amputee Rehabilitation (BACPAR).
