Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Associate in Science - Biological Sciences

The biology department is known for its excellence in preparing students for transfer to four-year colleges and professional health care certification programs. The biology program also equips students to succeed in other programs at De Anza, such as Environmental Studies, Nursing and Health Technology.

The degree allows the student to develop a broad set of essential life/work competencies such as: communication, critical thinking, problem solving, quantitative reasoning and multicultural skills.

Students pursuing the Systems Programming A.A. degree learn computer programming fundamentals of both low-level and high-level languages and gain computing experience on both Windows and Linux platforms.

De Anza's Computer Information Systems (CIS) department has been a leading educational institution in Silicon Valley since the college was founded. Over the years it has developed a rich and diverse series of courses in many areas. Our courses meet the needs of both the transfer student and the industry professional. Students who take courses and earn degrees in the CIS department often go on to transfer to four-year universities in majors such as Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science and many other majors that required CIS courses.

The Film/TV: Production A.A. degree provides a more highly developed introduction to production for students interested in pursuing a career in the film or television industry or a baccalaureate degree in Film, Television, and Electronic Media. Students are exposed to various facets of professional film and/or television production, including producing, screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing and sound design.

We live in the age of the image, in a world of large and small screens. The Film/TV Department provides students with the critical skills to analyze media and the practical skills to create compelling content for spectators and screens of all sizes.

Integrating theory and practice, the Film/TV program at De Anza includes a comprehensive curriculum in Media Studies, Screenwriting, Film and Television Production, and Animation. We prepare you to transfer to a four-year university or to enter the workforce.

The Intercultural Studies Department offers an interdisciplinary major leading to certificates, an A.A. degree, or transfer in Intercultural (Ethnic) Studies.  This major represents the joint commitment of the African America, Asian American and Asian, Chicanx/Latinx, Native American, and core Intercultural Studies areas, and provides a diverse curriculum whose educational objectives include the following:

  • Develop a methodology emphasizing comparative analyses of the history, politics, social dynamics, and current  challenges and opportunities of historically marginalized communities of color;
  • Develop the skills and capabilities to critically analyze information prevalent in the dominant  culture from the perspective of historically marginalized communities of color;
  • Examine ethnicity theory, race relations theory, feminist theory, cross-cultural communications theory, peace/conflict/ reconciliation theory, healing and social transformation theory and practices, and explore the intersectional and multidimensional issues of racism, institutions, power as they relate to advocating for equity and social justice.

The major also examines the need for and role of multiracial alliances, economic class analysis, the role of healing in social change work, and provides expertise in areas that will allow students to develop the critical analysis, interpersonal capacities, and leadership and organizing skills to be responsive to the multidimensional needs of historically marginalized communities of color in the short term, and to also contribute to long-term systemic transformation for equity and social justice.

The Business Department at De Anza College is one of the nation's leading two-year business programs, with courses, degrees and certificates that provide you with the competitive edge to excel in your career, transfer to a four-year university, or manage your own business.

We offer a wide range of business courses in management, marketing, human resource management, international business, business law, entrepreneurship and more. Our instructors are enthusiastic about sharing their in-depth knowledge and industry experience, while teaching practical skills in these fields.

The A.A. degree in Management prepares students for a career managing and leading employees in positions such as (but not limited to) service manager, retail sales manager, customer service supervisor, office manager, human resources coordinator, employee benefits associate, construction project manager, hotel/hospitality supervisor or management trainee. students learn the fundamentals of general business administration, with an emphasis on management, leadership, and human resource management.

Public Safety and Legal Studies

Associate in Arts - Paralegal Studies

The De Anza College Paralegal Studies Program was among the first paralegal studies programs to be initially approved by the State of California in 1984. Since then the program has continually provided a quality educational course of study that incorporates basic legal instruction along with practical training that graduates will need to successfully enter the work force. Our graduates are employed in private law offices, public agencies and corporate law offices.

The Paralegal Studies A.A. degree programs prepare students to work in the legal field as paralegals under the supervision of attorneys. Paralegal duties include performing factual and legal research, drafting legal documents and correspondence, interviewing clients and witnesses, assisting attorneys in pretrial work, including document discovery and analysis, and at trials and hearings, organizing and maintaining case files and coordinating the use of technology in legal work.

Health Sciences, Nursing and Emergency Services

Associate in Arts - Medical Laboratory Technology

The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program prepares students to work as medical laboratory technicians in clinical laboratories, industry and biotechnology. The MLT curriculum combines classroom lectures, student laboratories and clinical training to foster the analytical and problem solving skills required in this profession.

The A.A. degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is a 24-month course of study (including summers) that prepares students for a career as a medical laboratory technician through classroom study and supervised clinical training. The MLT Program provides students with a quality education that complies with the established standards and guidelines of an accredited laboratory training program. Graduates of the degree program are eligible to sit for a state-approved national MLT certification examination.

This A.A. degree offers a foundation in lower division courses enabling students to pursue a B.A. or B.F.A. in sculpture or design at a four-year institution. The degree prepares students to transition successfully into a university environment. Their acquired knowledge may be transferred into areas such as teaching, studio art production, product design, museum work, architectural design and model making

De Anza's Art Department emphasizes the teaching of strong technical skills and nurtures each individual's originality in order to prepare students for global inclusiveness through creative engagement.

Our program is designed to train future vocational and avocational artists in the ability to communicate creative expression through craftmanship, concept and design lexicon. Our instructors are practicing professionals whose work reflects a dedication to the development of creative and conceptual styles, as well as abilities.

The Photography Department offers exceptional instruction in beginning, intermediate, and advanced photography.  The department maintains a fully operating wet darkroom and professionally equipped digital labs.  Visual communication and principles of image control and craft are essential components of all the photography classes.  Students develop the technical, critical and practical skills required to succeed in this constantly challenging and changing medium.  The photography department has one of the best-equipped and largest facilities in the Bay Area.  Students are given the opportunity to apply new skills to real and simulated situations found in photographic careers.
 
Photography students produce technically and aesthetically accomplished imagery.  Students have graduated De Anza to enter careers in advertising, editorial work, photo illustration, fashion, architecture, and product photography.  Fine art and documentary photography are integral parts of the program.
