Some students wishing to major in English have special interests or career objectives so different from those for which the other options are designed that another pattern of courses would better serve their personal educational needs. For those students, the Special Emphasis option offers an opportunity to pursue individually designed 41-unit programs of study. Student programs may center on technical writing, for example, or other writing goals; they may focus on American or English literature or literature in a particular genre, a particular historical period, or a particular theme.

A Special Emphasis program may include courses outside the Department of English closely related to a student’s focus in English studies. At least 21 units must be earned in the Department of English at CSULB and at least 21 units of the program must be upper division.

This master's degree provides foundations and practical skills for individuals seeking career growth in educational, corporate, and public service settings that use educational technologies including resources for e-learning and social media. The program prepares graduates for leadership roles in educational institutions and other agencies; it provides training in instructional design, multimedia development and management, and e-learning, and it builds a foundation for individuals planning to pursue doctoral degrees.

We offer a strong program with a substantial emphasis on novel research and defense of a thesis. Our M.S. Chemistry and Biochemistry graduates often go on to Ph.D. and professional programs, while others pursue careers in industrial settings or teaching.

This program is designed both for students who wish to pursue further graduate study and those seeking a terminal degree. The program seeks to blend theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics and draws from a variety of disciplines.

The Special Concentration Option allows a student to plan an individualized course of study around a special interest. Recent students have designed special concentrations in Psycholinguistics, Computational Linguistics, teaching Spanish, teaching Japanese, and teaching Chinese.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design is comprised of 132 semester units. The program provides a framework within which students can fully immerse themselves in a critical examination of then social, cultural, and environmental awareness while giving visual form to their investigations. It supports opportunities for employment in the practice of Interior Design; in addition it helps prepare those who are interested in continuing on with a Masters degree or wish to pursue teaching. A diverse curriculum of lecture and studio courses develops the student's cognitive ability to analyze design challenges of a complex nature. Issues of graphic communication, project analysis, programming, space planning, design and selection of interior components are presented in a logical sequence. Instruction emphasizes the three-dimensional possibilities of sculpting interior space, from conceptual ideas. The courses include lectures, demonstrations, and critiques of works-in-progress. Professional designers and educators from outside the department visit regularly to lecture and review student projects.

The WGSS Department recognizes that recent acts of racist terror committed under the authority of the police are only one example of the structural racism that characterizes this country. We stand committed to the mission of reconciliation and education that we see as essential to move in the direction of the eradication of the racism embedded in every institution that comprises the United States. Integral to that mission, we oppose militarism, dictatorship, and the abuse of power threatened by federal government. The goal of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is to analyze gender and sexuality as complex systems of power that are structured by race, ethnicity, nation, and class.

We are committed to teaching gender literacy as knowledge integral to civic literacy. From an interdisciplinary perspective, students explore a sophisticated body of knowledge and academic discipline to develop the skills for critical thinking and civic engagement.

The Master of Science in Geographic Information Science (MSGISci) is designed to address the needs of individuals across the geospatial workforce who require focused and specialized training to become competitive and contribute to the range of positions in this diverse industry. This one-year 30-unit applied training program combines advanced technical and analytic training in the geospatial sciences with training in interpersonal and business skills. The program’s coursework is designed as a professional science masters to develop competencies essential for successful geospatial practitioners.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.

The Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre Arts is the terminal degree offering the professional training deemed necessary by the major Theatre Arts Schools in the United States.

All students admitted to the MFA program are members of California Repertory Company and are subject to the operating procedures of the company. CalRep, the professional arm of the Theatre Arts Department, prepares and performs plays from the canon of international dramatic literature

Typical tasks and responsibilities undertaken by students in the curriculum for this program would not fall within one of the traditional specialties in engineering, e.g. aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, or computer science and engineering. The student may pursue an interdisciplinary program, approved by a graduate advisor, by selecting courses from the various departments of engineering.
