The Department exists to promote a broader and deeper understanding of the role that leisure and recreation provides in the lives of all people as well as to enhance the quality of Recreation Leisure experiences available to each person. This program is designed to accommodate the needs of new college students, continuing students, transferring students, and experienced recreation professionals.

Students intending to transfer from community colleges to this University are advised to complete general education requirements while attending the community college. Other recreation courses taken at community colleges cannot be substituted for upper-division recreation courses. Student must maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA on all units attempted and achieve a “C” or better in each course of the Recreation major to progress in the sequence of study. Students earning less than a “C” grade in a course required in the major must repeat that course.

The BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science, offers a course of study combining dance with specific kinesiology and science courses for students interested in teaching careers in dance, dance medicine, careers in dance fitness, or graduate education in the areas of dance science or related dance studies. Students interested in the BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science should meet with Program Coordinator Brooke Winder no later than the start of their 2nd year (earlier for transfer students). Additionally, students must pass BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , and DANC 260 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 to satisfy the major specific declaration requirements. The objective of the international business option is to prepare students for the increasingly competitive and interdependent international business world with which they must cope. There is great and growing need for American business school graduates to be better informed about how to compete and do business outside the U. S. as well as in the U. S. market where much of their competition is from foreign firms. Students need to understand how international business practices and customs differ from those in the U. S. They need at least some familiarity with a language other than English as well as with cultural diversity and world geography.

The Master of Arts in Dance is a 31-unit practice-oriented degree created to serve dance educators working primarily in secondary and community college settings. It is designed to broaden and deepen dance knowledge and skills, including hands-on experience in dance concert production. The MA functions as a form of continuing education and professional development for credentialed teachers.

Because M.A. candidates are employed during the academic year, this low-residency program is designed to be completed during summer sessions and via distance learning experiences.

The M.A. in Dance is run as a Special Sessions Program through the University's College of Continuing and Professional Education. The M.A. program of study consists of three intensive summer sessions of 9-12 units of coursework and the successful completion of comprehensive exams taken during and immediately following the third summer. The M.A. in Dance offers both studio and theory courses; it is designed to broaden and deepen dance knowledge and skills, including hands-on experience in dance concert production. All courses are designed to introduce new concepts and trigger deeper thought and analysis in the field of dance. All courses in the M.A. degree are at the graduate level and are offered only to graduate students.

The Liberal Studies major provides a rich, rigorous crossdisciplinary liberal arts program of study. There are two programs in the major: 1) The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is for students intending to become teachers who wish to combine subject matter preparation for elementary teaching with coursework leading to a Multiple Subject teaching credential; 2) The Liberal Studies major (120 units) is for students who seek subject matter preparation for elementary teaching as preparation for a post-baccalaureate credential program to be completed separately from the bachelor’s degree.

The Department of Journalism & Public Relations offers undergraduate programs that prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations and other media, editorial and storytelling related industries. Students take courses that provide both a strong theoretical foundation and real-life, hands-on training in the skills they need to pursue careers in mass communications. Journalism graduates become reporters, editors, bloggers, broadcasters, designers and managers at media organizations and are trained in multimedia storytelling and communicating across multiple platforms, including newspapers, magazines, online media, social media, radio, and television.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.

The Department offers a comprehensive program of courses coupled with appropriate thesis projects leading to the Master of Science in Geology. Within geology, students specialize in any of a number of sub-disciplines including environmental geochemistry, hydrogeology, marine geology, petrology, paleontology, petroleum geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural and field geology, geophysics, and paleoclimatology.

Students may include in their studies courses offered by other departments at CSULB. Interested students are encouraged to contact faculty in their intended areas of study and research.

This degree track welcomes applications from composers who are working with live technologies (and perhaps mostly—or even exclusively--creating new works that exist without a traditional score), and we also welcome applicants who don’t necessarily define themselves as composers at all, but as sound artists and other creators working with sound in various ways in conjunction with other media. Students working in the Composition with Interactive Media track realize new works in conjunction with their work with the BCCM Laptop Ensemble and often collaborate with colleagues in other departments and programs on campus, including art, computer science, dance, design, and film & electronic arts.
