Students in this track will take a series of courses to help them develop skills for the field of illustration. Professional illustrators create work for a wide variety of applications. Some examples are: editorial work for magazines and newspapers, comics and graphic novels, textiles/clothing and the home and gift market, technical and biomedical illustration, entertainment (storyboards and visual development) and advertising. Students will focus on building their skills in drawing, painting and conceptualizing to create strong work geared towards their area of interest using their particular strengths.

Animation

Students in this track will focus specifically on creating a body of work involving moving images. Examples include: a traditional hand-drawn animation reel, a 3D digital animation reel, an experimental animation reel (this refers to inventive non-traditional methods of animation using a variety of materials and methods, such as stop-motion animation), or a short animated film using any or all of the previously listed approaches. Students making a film will write, design, storyboard and animate their own film.

Pre-Production

Students in this track will focus specifically on building skills for working in the pre-production phase of film, television and game projects. Some examples of pre-production art are: character design, storyboards, background painting, layout, visual development (which usually involves the visualization through illustration of environments, props, etc. in the early stages of a project, such as a film, episodic TV/Cable/Internet, or games), digital modeling (building 3D models digitally of characters, props, vehicles, and sets). Students will take courses with assignments geared specifically to these goals.

The Department of English at CSULB has over 40 tenure-track, tenured, and emeritus faculty whose research and teaching interests cover the range of periods, authors, and genres in British and American literature; focus on a variety of critical and theoretical approaches; and explore diverse topics in the study of reading and writing in English.Our graduate seminars are small classes that encourage students to examine and explore the topic intensively, and they are designed to broaden and deepen students’ understanding of the intellectual, cultural, rhetorical, and aesthetic traditions of literature and writing in English.

The MA program in English is designed to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of the literary and rhetorical traditions of writing in English, as well as to provide the opportunity for intensive study in one or more specialized area(s) of literature or rhetoric and composition. The MA program in English emphasizes close reading and critical analysis by developing students’ abilities to situate texts within their larger aesthetic, historical, and professional contexts, conduct independent research, and formulate original arguments in oral presentations and writing.

The Department of Geological Sciences is a student-centered program that provides undergraduate students with substantial laboratory- and field-based instruction and opportunities to participate in research. Graduate students investigate a considerable range and variety of research topics for their theses. Our program has a proud tradition with a continuing commitment in preparing our students for professional careers or further post-graduate education.

Our program is based solidly in fundamental geological skills with an emphasis in field experiences. We are located 10 minutes from the beach, one hour from the mountains and the San Andreas Fault, and two hours from the desert!

Geologists are scientific detectives who uncover the past, investigate the present and predict the future of Earth. For example, geologists determine where it is safe to live, where to find essential resources, how to deal with pollution and environmental changes, and how to remediate the damage to Earth. Students who enjoy working and recreating outdoors and are curious about how the world around them works will find this field a rewarding area of study.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a high-unit professional degree and requires 132 units for graduation. Music units include the core requirements and one option. Students interested in the BM program must successfully complete an audition for entrance to the program. This should be accomplished prior to entrance to the University. Students wishing to consider the BM program after they have enrolled at CSULB may not apply after they have completed more than a maximum of 96 units.

CSULB is one of only a handful of schools that offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology. This degree program, operated under the auspices of the Department of Biological Sciences, is designed both for students considering graduate work in marine biology, and also for those seeking employment in private industry or governmental agencies.

Students working towards the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology enroll in small upper division lecture and lab classes taught by Ph.D.-level faculty. They take frequent field trips to nearby bay, estuary, rocky intertidal, and open ocean habitats. There are many opportunities for motivated undergraduates to carry out original scientific research. A Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from CSULB has helped many of our past students to successfully compete for marine biology-related jobs in resource management agencies and companies. Many of our alumni also go on to do graduate work in the marine sciences.

The Master of Science Degree in School Counseling is a 51-57 unit program. Graduates of the program are typically employed in K-12 education to support the academic, social/emotional, and career readiness needs of all students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. Program candidates concurrently meet requirements for the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential required for persons employed as school counselors in public schools. The program is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design is comprised of 132 semester units. The program provides a framework within which students can fully immerse themselves in a critical examination of then social, cultural, and environmental awareness while giving visual form to their investigations. It supports opportunities for employment in the practice of Interior Design; in addition it helps prepare those who are interested in continuing on with a Masters degree or wish to pursue teaching. A diverse curriculum of lecture and studio courses develops the student's cognitive ability to analyze design challenges of a complex nature. Issues of graphic communication, project analysis, programming, space planning, design and selection of interior components are presented in a logical sequence. Instruction emphasizes the three-dimensional possibilities of sculpting interior space, from conceptual ideas. The courses include lectures, demonstrations, and critiques of works-in-progress. Professional designers and educators from outside the department visit regularly to lecture and review student projects.

This degree is available to qualified students preparing for professional careers in research, education, industry, consulting, government, and health professions. Our Biology M.S. degrees are appropriate choices for students seeking to increase their competitiveness for further studies at the doctoral level and professional schools. In addition, a master’s degree in biology, combined with appropriate courses in education, can be utilized for a teaching career.This degree requires a thesis based on original scientific research; a list of research areas with the names of faculty specializing in these areas can be obtained from the department’s website.
