Department of Communication Studies provides students with a liberal arts education in communication arts and sciences with specialized training in communication skills and practices at the baccalaureate and graduate levels. Each student is required to consult with the department undergraduate or graduate advisor as appropriate for advisement.

The Printmaking program incorporates a number of historical media including etching, lithography, relief printing, monotype, and screen printing while expanding upon emerging photographic and digital processes. Emphasis is placed on both unique/individual images and the multiple.

CSULB’S Masters degree in history is ideal for students planning to pursue Ph.Ds, for secondary teachers, for professionals seeking a graduate degree, and for lifelong learners.

Our graduates have gone on to doctoral programs at Princeton, Yale, Cornell, UCLA, University of London, University of California at Santa Barbara, and University of California at San Diego among others. Other graduates are successful secondary teachers and community college faculty, and professionals working in government, real estate, business, and the National Park Service.

This five-semester program offers students close contact with faculty mentors, rigorous training in historical methods (critical analysis, synthesis and writing), and an opportunity to tailor their programs to pursue specific interests in U.S., European, World History, and Ancient and Medieval History.

Students build expertise in two fields of concentration and choose among three final projects: Comprehensive Exams, a thesis, or a teaching unit (primarily for secondary teachers).

Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from education to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical societal change. What unifies these diverse topics of study, however, is sociology’s core purpose of understanding how human action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures.

Sociology is an exciting and enlightening field of study that analyzes and explains important issues in our personal lives, our communities, and the world. At the individual level, sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of things such as emotions and ideologies, racial identity, sexuality, health and wellness, and crime. At the societal level, sociology addresses issues such as poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, law and the criminal justice system, and social movements. And at the global level, sociology studies such phenomena as political power, migration, war, terrorism, human rights and economic development. Students of sociology are challenged to look beyond the “normal”, taken-for-granted views to develop deeper and revealing understandings of the world around us.

The Master of Science Degree in School Counseling is a 51-57 unit program. Graduates of the program are typically employed in K-12 education to support the academic, social/emotional, and career readiness needs of all students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. Program candidates concurrently meet requirements for the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential required for persons employed as school counselors in public schools. The program is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program prepares individuals for a career as a certified athletic trainer. Athletic trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. The services provided are preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletic Training is recognized by the American Medical Association as a healthcare profession. The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) is a full-time, cohort-model program.

The Master of Science in Athletic Training program is open to all college graduates who have met prerequisite requirements and demonstrate sufficient preparation, potential for professional education, and the ability to perform the essential functions needed to practice as an athletic trainer as determined by an athletic training faculty review of admission documents.

Graduates of HCA master’s degree programs will achieve competencies in the areas of (1) communications and relationship management, (2) leadership, (3) professionalism, (4) knowledge of health care environment, and (5) business skills and knowledge. These competencies are the main domains of the model based on the American College of Health Care Executives’ (ACHE) Competency Assessment Tool and Healthcare Leadership Alliance’s (HLA) Competency Directory.

The Program’s curriculum was designed, and has been revised over the years, to provide students with the health care management knowledge and skills necessary to meet the changing needs of the health care industry and to conform to academic accreditation criteria. HCA follows a generalist approach in the design of its program and admits students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

The Communication Studies Department offers a Masters of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Our program provides students with advanced instruction in the major theories and research methods in the academic discipline of communication. Our graduates typically go on to doctoral programs or become communication instructors at the community college level. We provide students with a broad foundation in the discipline of communication. As such, we do not offer areas of specialty, but students can take a variety of elective courses.

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program.

The Master of Arts Degree in Education, Option in Social and Cultural Analysis of Education (SCAE), focuses on the social and cultural analysis of education in urban and global contexts. Emphasizing critical approaches to education, including critical theory and critical pedagogy, the degree's interdisciplinary nature provides the intellectual rigor necessary for analyzing the relationship between education and society and effecting social and educational justice. SCAE courses examine education in its historical, social, and political contexts, and may be applied to all levels of education—locally, nationally, and internationally. In the SCAE program, education is conceived broadly to encompass K-12 and higher education, community-based education, adult education and other spaces in which people engage in teaching and learning.
