A core mission of our program is to provide high-quality graduate training in marine biology research. Students interested in marine biology-related topics enter the Master of Science in Biology program and work directly with marine biology faculty to design and carry out basic and applied research projects. Graduate work in marine biology at CSU Long Beach provides students with solid training in experimental design, field and laboratory research, statistical analysis, and science communication. These skills permit our graduates to pursue a wide diversity of science-related careers, including teaching at the community college level, work in biological consulting firms, or positions in regional, state, or federal resource management agencies. Many of our graduates also continue their studies in Ph.D. programs, opening up even more career opportunities.

The master's program prepares nurses to assume roles either as nurse practitioners or as nursing and healthcare systems executive managers.

The purpose of the nurse practitioner program is to prepare competent nurse practitioners who possess knowledge, skills and abilities in physical diagnosis, psycho-social assessment and management of health-illness needs in a primary or acute care environment.

The purpose of the Nursing and Healthcare Systems Executive Management program is to prepare nurses to assume executive-level positions and senior leadership roles in hospitals, clinics, healthcare systems and other healthcare entities serving patients in highly complex and diverse settings.

The master of science degree is open to qualified students who desire advanced preparation in a variety of areas of clinical specialization and executive management.

Nutrition is a potent modulator of the acute responses and chronic adaptations to exercise and training. The Master’s Program in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition allows students to study the interaction between nutrition and the physiology of exercise. Graduates will understand how to meet the nutritional needs of exercise, training, and conditioning to enhance human health, function, and performance as well as the underlying mechanisms at the molecular level to the whole body. The Physiology of Exercise and Sport (PEXS) Laboratory is operated by active researchers in the field and is equipped for gene and biochemical analysis as well as whole-body metabolics and athletic performance. From athletic performance to community nutrition, this degree prepares students to work with a wide variety of populations in a number of different settings using research-based curriculum, practical experiences, and original research. The Master’s Program in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition also equips students for advanced graduate work including doctoral degrees and clinical and medical training.

The Master of Science in Mathematics with option in Mathematics Education for Secondary School Teachers program is designed for people holding a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics and teaching in middle, junior high, or high schools. This option will give students greater expertise in mathematics and mathematics education (curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment and research). The program includes a blend of courses from pure and applied mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, and also may include coursework from the College of Education.

The Environmental Science and Policy (ES&P) degrees program is jointly housed in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, reflecting its inherent interdisciplinary nature. A Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science as well as a minor are available.

Students in the B.S. degree program are encouraged to seek a minor in anthropology, biology, chemistry, earth science, ecology, economics, geography, geology, or political science.

The programs in chemistry and biochemistry at the bachelor’s degree level are planned to develop background in a specific science, to serve as preparation for graduate work in chemistry or biochemistry, and to provide a foundation for those students seeking careers in the chemical sciences, teaching, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other health?related professions, and in industrial and governmental scientific occupations.

This new degree program is aimed at pre-professional students, who will be able to use many professional school pre-requisites to fulfill their elective unit requirements

The Master of Public Health in Community Health provides an opportunity for students: to specialize in global health or latino health within the general context of Public Health; to increase competence in designing, implementing, and evaluating social behavior changes programs in preparation for serving in various health agencies; prepare for teaching at college and university levels; and for administrative positions in public and private health agencies.

The BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science, offers a course of study combining dance with specific kinesiology and science courses for students interested in teaching careers in dance, dance medicine, careers in dance fitness, or graduate education in the areas of dance science or related dance studies. Students interested in the BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science should meet with Program Coordinator Brooke Winder no later than the start of their 2nd year (earlier for transfer students). Additionally, students must pass BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , and DANC 260 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 to satisfy the major specific declaration requirements. The Construction Management specialization within the MSCE program requires completion of 30 units of graduate courses, as specified below. Each student's program must satisfy all requirements of the university, college, and department, and contain the equivalent of 10 or more units of design, as determined by the department's graduate coordinator. During the first two weeks of the first semester as a graduate student at CSULB, the student should make an appointment to meet with the graduate coordinator, who will assign him/her to one of the construction management area faculty.

The Religious Studies M.A. at CSULB is the only M.A. in Religious Studies offered in the entire CSU system. That make it the least expensive Religious Studies M.A. in the entire state of California. It is a “stand-alone” M.A. program–one of about fifteen in the U.S. –which means that it is not an afterthought or consolation prize in some other degree program. We are going to give you personal attention that prepares you for the next level. An M.A. from CSULB can do what the gravitational field of Mars can do for a space probe on the way to Pluto. You can use our gravitational field to sling you into orbit for a better graduate program (if you want a Ph.D. or some other advanced degree) or career.

Why is this so? First of all our graduated M.A.s have gone on to good Ph.D. programs–@ Heildelberg, Edinburgh, University of California, etc. You have a chance to polish your writing skills and learn languages that make you more attractive to such schools.Good schools want you to have tackled research and target languages. Second, you learn how to learn things fast, well, and critically. In the world of knowledge-based economies, you have the basic skills for any knowledge-based career. You can discern quickly what is garbage, what is fact-based, and what is possible. Our graduates have become entrepreneurs, writers, social activists, and religious leaders.They innovate and adapt.

Third, we take your interest in Religion seriously and know that you want to grow as a person while you are learning. That means, whatever your religious position–from Atheist to Zoroastrian, Christian, Muslim, or Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, or Sikh, Neo-pagan or “None,” Fundamentalist or Progressive–you are welcome here. This means that you will meet people with religious positions that are different from your own and have conversations that you could not have imagined in a parochial program.
