The German Master of Arts program focuses on cultural studies topics and skills regarding foremost literature, cinema, philosophy, and pedagogy. Students are encouraged to study at German-speaking universities and the program assists with overseas study plans. For graduate students interested in multimedia teaching technology, the program provides special projects and practical opportunities. Teaching Assistantships are available.

The MSCE Structural Engineering specialization requires completion of 30 units of graduate courses, as specified below. Each student's program must satisfy all requirements of the university, college, and department, and contain the equivalent of 10 or more units of design, as determined by the department's graduate coordinator. During the first two weeks of the first semester as a CSULB graduate student, the student should schedule an advising appointment with the graduate coordinator, who will assign him/her to one of the Structural specialization faculty.

This program is designed both for students who wish to pursue further graduate study and those seeking a terminal degree. The program seeks to blend theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics and draws from a variety of disciplines.

The objective of the international business option is to prepare students for the increasingly competitive and interdependent international business world with which they must cope. There is great and growing need for American business school graduates to be better informed about how to compete and do business outside the U. S. as well as in the U. S. market where much of their competition is from foreign firms. Students need to understand how international business practices and customs differ from those in the U. S. They need at least some familiarity with a language other than English as well as with cultural diversity and world geography.

Typical tasks and responsibilities undertaken by students in the curriculum for this program would not fall within one of the traditional specialties in engineering, e.g. aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, or computer science and engineering. The student may pursue an interdisciplinary program, approved by a graduate advisor, by selecting courses from the various departments of engineering. The Department of English at CSULB has over 40 tenure-track, tenured, and emeritus faculty whose research and teaching interests cover the range of periods, authors, and genres in British and American literature; focus on a variety of critical and theoretical approaches; and explore diverse topics in the study of reading and writing in English.Our graduate seminars are small classes that encourage students to examine and explore the topic intensively, and they are designed to broaden and deepen students’ understanding of the intellectual, cultural, rhetorical, and aesthetic traditions of literature and writing in English.

The MA program in English is designed to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of the literary and rhetorical traditions of writing in English, as well as to provide the opportunity for intensive study in one or more specialized area(s) of literature or rhetoric and composition. The MA program in English emphasizes close reading and critical analysis by developing students’ abilities to situate texts within their larger aesthetic, historical, and professional contexts, conduct independent research, and formulate original arguments in oral presentations and writing.

American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines American life and culture.The work of American Studies takes place both on campuses and in communities. American Studies scholars investigate where the ideals of American democracy are at their finest and where they remain incomplete.  

American Studies at CSULB was first established in the 1970s. Recently, a group of faculty committed to current ideas and scholarship in American Studies revitalized the program on campus. American Studies offers students of today a new approach to learning. Because of its flexibility, students will actively assist in the growth and design of the American Studies program at CSULB by establishing links among departments and areas of study and by designing their own plan of inquiry. Students will explore various aspects of society and culture at different moments in American history and situate the interactions between peoples in a culturally diverse society within national and global contexts.

The major in American Studies offers a solid background for careers in law, journalism, public service, business, and education. The program also provides the foundation for graduate work in American Studies and related fields. The Master of Arts in Education, Option in Early Childhood Education (30-33 units) is designed to foster the development of educators who are able to apply research-based knowledge in designing developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum and assessment strategies for children ages birth through 8. Candidates develop parent involvement strategies, reflect on issues facing the field, evaluate the quality of early childhood programs in their local communities, critically evaluate policies that impact young children and their families around the world, and utilize technology to enhance communication and learning.

The Finance option provides an understanding of the role of finance in the corporate and international environment and an understanding of investments at both the corporate and personal level. This option provides an understanding of the role of finance in a business context, including the development of a comprehension of business ethics.

Finance Consists of three interrelated areas:

• Financial Management: which involves the actual financial management of a firm as well as the theory of finance applicable to all other areas of finance;
• Investments: which focuses on the decision of investors as they choose investment securities and manage their investment portfolios;
• Money & Capital Markets: which deals with security markets and financial institutions.

Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from education to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical societal change. What unifies these diverse topics of study, however, is sociology’s core purpose of understanding how human action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures.

Sociology is an exciting and enlightening field of study that analyzes and explains important issues in our personal lives, our communities, and the world. At the individual level, sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of things such as emotions and ideologies, racial identity, sexuality, health and wellness, and crime. At the societal level, sociology addresses issues such as poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, law and the criminal justice system, and social movements. And at the global level, sociology studies such phenomena as political power, migration, war, terrorism, human rights and economic development. Students of sociology are challenged to look beyond the “normal”, taken-for-granted views to develop deeper and revealing understandings of the world around us.
