Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The composition program at CSULB provides students with advanced skills covering a wide range of compositional techniques and technologies in order that they become more informed, literate musicians, better prepared to develop their own unique creative compositional voice. The program provides a robust and cooperative musical environment where students have ample opportunities to have their work performed. Skills taught include: beginning and advanced film scoring, advanced theory, electronic and computer music, experimental music and digital media, sound design, advanced topics in listening and analysis, song writing, music theater, music and dance collaboration, sound engineering and recording.

This degree option prepares students to become professional composers in various contemporary styles and media including contemporary classical, film and electronic arts, theater, computer music and mixed media. It also prepares students for further study at the graduate level with goal of teaching at the college level.

The MSCE Environmental Engineering / Water Resources Engineering specialization requires completion of 30 units of graduate courses, as specified below.  Each student's program must satisfy all requirements of the university, college, and department, and contain the equivalent of 10 or more units of design, as determined by the department's graduate coordinator. During the first two weeks of the first semester as a graduate student at CSULB, the student should make an appointment to meet with the graduate coordinator, who will assign him/her to one of the environmental and water resources engineering area faculty.

Environmental Studies & Earth Sciences

Bachelor of Science in Earth Science

The bachelor of science degree in Earth Science is designed for those students considering a professional career in environmental, geotechnical, or engineering geology. The program also provides a fundamental education in geology that prepares students for graduate studies in the geological sciences. The required curriculum includes surficial geology courses (geomorphology, hydrology) not required as part of the B.S. in Geology. Earth Science majors must receive a grade of “C” or better in all courses required for the major. A minimum of 120 units is required for the bachelor of science degree. Transfer students should attempt to fulfill, prior to transferring, the appropriate lower division curricular requirements as outlined below. In particular students should take prior to transferring the equivalent of GEOL 102 and GEOL 104, and at least three of the following four: CHEM 111A, CHEM 111B, MATH 122, and MATH 123.

The Environmental Science and Policy (ES&P) degrees program is jointly housed in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, reflecting its inherent interdisciplinary nature. A Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science as well as a minor are available.

Students in the B.S. degree program are encouraged to seek a minor in anthropology, biology, chemistry, earth science, ecology, economics, geography, geology, or political science.

The B.A. in Linguistics, Option in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is a program for students who are interested in TESOL. The program provides a broad foundation in linguistic theory related to sound and grammar systems, typology, language acquisition, and pedagogy. The program aims to integrate theory and practice, and help students develop a range of practical skills for teaching in a second language classroom.

This Option is suitable for students interested in teaching English abroad, teaching locally in non-public-school settings, or continuing to a Master’s or Graduate Certificate in TESOL. The Option is not a credential program for public school teaching, but some prerequisite work for a teaching credential may be completed as part of the major.

The Electronics Engineering Technology program, prepares the student for a position as a technologist, in such industries as aerospace, computers, communications, biomedical, chemical, power, etc. Students are offered a wide range of training in topics such as instrumentation, controls, microprocessors, microelectronics, biomedical electronics, communications, motors and generators, robotics, computer applications, programming and interfacing. Moreover the program emphasizes written and oral communications skills as well as modern methods of industrial administration and supervision.

This degree prepares you for a position as a technologist, in the aerospace, computer, communications, biomedical, chemical, or power industries. Students learn about instrumentation, controls, microprocessors, microelectronics, biomedical electronics, communications, motors and generators, robotics, computer applications, programming, and interfacing.
