Master of Arts in Linguistics, General Linguistics Option

This option is designed primarily for those interested in careers that are related to zoology, ecology, and botany. It is particularly appropriate for students who wish to attend veterinary or graduate school, and for those seeking employment in environmental consulting firms, and fish and wildlife agencies. This option requires approximately 80-83 units in the major, of which 43-46 units are in lower division and 37 units are in upper division.

Our MFA degree in Studio Art is designed to foster both interdisciplinary and discipline-specific dialogue by engaging students in a set of core department-wide requirements, interdisciplinary opportunities, and discipline- specific courses and curricular “tracks.”

Within the MFA degree in Studio Art students develop a personalized program of study within established curricular parameters, and with the consultation and approval of the student’s faculty committee. Students develop a more personalized program of study within curricular tracks reflecting the School of Art’s varied programs in Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Fiber, Graphic Design, Illustration/Animation, Metal, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture/4D, and Wood.

The Mission of the Construction Management program is to educate and prepare students to succeed in the construction management profession by providing them with essential technical, managerial and communication skills and tools which will enable them to perform current and future construction management tasks and to promote the need for life-long learning.

A degree in German emphasizes competency in the use of language and a thorough understanding of important aspects of contemporary society in German speaking countries (literature, political life, film, social issues). At the heart of the European unification process and serving as the new bridge towards Central and Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland play a pivotal international role in politics, in trade and in cultural exchanges.

In this program, efforts are made to accommodate needs of students who simultaneously pursue many majors including other RGRLL programs, International Studies, Biology, Business, Engineering, or a certificate in Travel and Tourism.

Completion of the German major (plus 6 additional units) meets the subject matter competence requirement for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in German. Prospective students should consult the undergraduate German Advisor and the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Program Advisor early to plan their program.

Sculpture offers opportunities to explore figurative and formal approaches through molding, casting, and fabrication methods; video, kinetics and electronic arts; installation and intermedia; and performance, participatory, and relational practices. These activities are engaged and investigated across the field of contemporary sculpture and related practices, and in multiple contexts.

The Sport Psychology and Leadership option provides rigorous training and exposure to the mental aspects of movement and sport and requires 120 units of study. This option has two concentrations – one in Sport Psychology and one in Leadership. The course work for both concentrations is the same except for the activity courses and the elective courses. The option is designed for students interested in careers in: 1) sport psychology; and 2) coaching outside the public school system (K-12), e.g., sport management/leadership; coaching professional athletes, coaching youth-sport athletes, and coaching in sport academies. Many students also consider pursuing graduate education.

The Rhetoric and Composition option is designed for students who desire to write for multiple readers and to analyze and interpret texts. This option prepares students for teaching on virtually all levels, for graduate study in English, and for professions that require intensive writing and communication skills.

The Master of Arts degree in Music provides academic concentrations in Musicology and Music Education.

The Master of Arts in Spanish from California State University, Long Beach opens doors for teachers, journalists, translators, writers, and other professionals seeking to demonstrate advanced knowledge of Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures. The program has approximately 45 active students at any given time, a number that allows for individualized mentoring, advising, and intellectual engagement. Our graduates have become K-12 teachers, journalists, translators, interpreters, technical writers, community college instructors, lawyers, and PhD students. We offer an active program of intellectual and cultural events as well as opportunities for community and campus engagement.
