The mission of the graduate program in Computer engineering and Computer Science at CSULB is to provide a high-quality educational experience and the technical specialization required to become successful leaders in industry. The program also prepares the students to pursue advanced degrees if they so desire. The graduate program involves advanced courses in analysis and design in computer software and hardware. The students may choose to do a thesis or take a comprehensive examination as the culmination of their program.

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) program aims to provide students with advanced training in sub-disciplines of mechanical engineering that combines modern engineering practice and rigorous theoretical framework to enhance students’ pursuit of professional careers and doctoral studies. The program involves application of mechanical engineering knowledge and skills to build students’ mastery in the areas of expertise in order to:

Utilize advanced theoretical techniques in the design and/or analysis of engineering systems;

Apply modern experimental and/or computational tools to design and/or simulate engineering systems;

Promote the field of study through research and/or development of novel engineering solutions.

The bachelor of science degree in Earth Science is designed for those students considering a professional career in environmental, geotechnical, or engineering geology. The program also provides a fundamental education in geology that prepares students for graduate studies in the geological sciences. The required curriculum includes surficial geology courses (geomorphology, hydrology) not required as part of the B.S. in Geology. Earth Science majors must receive a grade of “C” or better in all courses required for the major. A minimum of 120 units is required for the bachelor of science degree. Transfer students should attempt to fulfill, prior to transferring, the appropriate lower division curricular requirements as outlined below. In particular students should take prior to transferring the equivalent of GEOL 102 and GEOL 104, and at least three of the following four: CHEM 111A, CHEM 111B, MATH 122, and MATH 123.

The School Health Option is designed for persons who wish to become health science teachers in California middle and high schools. The program is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and meets subject matter competence requirements for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Health Science. Prospective students should consult the department’s Health Science Single Subject Advisor early to plan their program.

The Master of Arts in Spanish from California State University, Long Beach opens doors for teachers, journalists, translators, writers, and other professionals seeking to demonstrate advanced knowledge of Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures. The program has approximately 45 active students at any given time, a number that allows for individualized mentoring, advising, and intellectual engagement. Our graduates have become K-12 teachers, journalists, translators, interpreters, technical writers, community college instructors, lawyers, and PhD students. We offer an active program of intellectual and cultural events as well as opportunities for community and campus engagement. Our high standards combine with individualized attention to make the MA in Spanish from CSULB a highly-valued and competitive degree for the global marketplace.

The Master of Arts degree in Music provides academic concentrations in Musicology and Music Education.

This degree is designed to prepare students for careers in coaching and in student-athlete development. Required coursework includes Psychology of Coaching, Sport in U.S. Culture, Seminar in Motor Learning, Applied Biomechanics: Lifting and Work Capacity, Advanced Strength and Conditioning, Psychology of Injury and Research Methods and Statistical Analysis, and an additional 12 units that include electives and a culminating experience (i.e., thesis or capstone project). The curriculum is designed to provide students with a well-rounded coaching education, while challenging them to learn research-based practices and application. Students should graduate with an established coaching philosophy, networking skills, and improved methods of motivation and athlete skill development.

Consumer Affairs is an option within the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Our program is one of the leading undergraduate programs in the field. It offers an interdisciplinary study of the financial, legislative, psychological, sociological, and cultural factors involved in consumerism.

Areas covered in Consumer Affairs are Consumer Advocacy and Protection, Financial Management, and Housing. In addition, the course work in Consumer Affairs is complemented by minors in several areas including Business Management, Economics, and Marketing.

Through this diverse yet integrated course of study, students will gain specific skills and knowledge, learn by doing in applied field experiences, and have opportunities for independent study in areas of individual interest. Course of study includes

The Master of Arts in Human Experience Design Interactions (MA_HXDI) is comprised of 33 semester units. The program prepares students and/or returning professionals from diverse undergraduate backgrounds for advanced multidisciplinary design work in careers of their choice. Through the MA_HXDI program, students will develop expertise in the tools and methods of experience design as a strategy for making and adding value to systems, products, spaces, and services. Through a diverse faculty and collaborations with leading organizations, students will use cutting-edge technology tools while developing novel solutions to complex challenges. These tools provide both the quantitative data to support the qualitative research of human-centered design, as well as the digital interactions of contemporary human communication and experience. This ‘theory plus practice’ approach prepares students to smoothly transition into the broad spectrum of professional design roles, from design research to interaction design. Through research labs in the department of design, students have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, independently and through collaborations with business, government, education, entertainment, health care, and technology organizations. These collaborations provide students with highly sought after knowledge and skills for advanced design work.

The Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) Professional Program at California State University, Long Beach is designed to prepare leaders for a changing world by providing the skills that employers demand for the global workforce of the 21st century. The MAIA program, aligned with global standards in the field, combines interdisciplinary, policy-oriented, intercultural and global studies with career development. Through a cohort design, students attain both the international and project management skills employers demand for the global workforce of the 21st century. This 18-month program includes 12 months in residence, followed by a carefully placed internship with courses taken in residence or online. Graduates become prepared for careers in areas such as International Development & Relief, Migration Advocacy, International Non-Profit Management, International Business, and Trade Policy.

The MAIA program identifies and develops the professional skills necessary for a successful international career in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors—both at home and abroad. The core elements of the program include methodological skills, functional competence, and foreign language knowledge with a multidisciplinary approach. The curriculum applies prevalent theory to real-world situations, while developing tools for project development and problem resolution.
