Education in Geography at the graduate level at CSULB provides an opportunity to broaden one’s intellectual life and to acquire or upgrade knowledge and skills for many careers. The degree is particularly suitable for those graduates with one of the following professional goals:

• Advanced graduate work at the doctoral level
• Community college and K-12 teaching
• Public sector work (e.g., urban planning, environmental management, geospatial analyst)
• Private sector work (e.g., market area analysis, environmental and geospatial consulting)
• Non-governmental work (e.g., international agencies, local community organizing)

The Department of Journalism & Public Relations offers undergraduate programs that prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations and other media, editorial and storytelling related industries. Students take courses that provide both a strong theoretical foundation and real-life, hands-on training in the skills they need to pursue careers in mass communications. Public relations graduates become public relations professionals in corporations, nonprofit organizations, and communication firms and specialize in employee relations, media relations, community relations, multicultural relations, consumer relations, marketing communications, public affairs, and special event management. In their classes, public relations students learn how to use both traditional and digital forms of media, including social media, to communicate with target audiences. Advanced students become skilled in strategic planning and campaign development. The department offers two academic programs in public relations: A Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations (48 units) and a Minor in Public Relations (18 units).

The department offers a master’s degree in anthropology and an option in applied anthropology.

This is a 33-unit M.A. option comprised of a 9-unit core, a 12-unit applied core, a 6-unit thesis/project, and 6 elective units.

Within the global context of urban and regional cultural change, the program offers three concentrations: multicultural education, medical/health care, and community/organizations. Regional emphasis begins with the languages, cultures, and organizations of southern California and the Southwest and extends globally.

Sculpture offers opportunities to explore figurative and formal approaches through molding, casting, and fabrication methods; video, kinetics and electronic arts; installation and intermedia; and performance, participatory, and relational practices. These activities are engaged and investigated across the field of contemporary sculpture and related practices, and in multiple contexts.

Information Systems is the field that connects business and technology. Corporations are constantly seeking talents who are business minded and technically savvy. Our mission is to educate capable professionals who can effectively develop, manage, and enhance business information systems for better operations and decision making. Information Systems is to analyze, design, develop, and manage business information systems for effective operations and decision making. A successful information system student must excel in both in-depth understanding of business context, and solid technical abilities.

This option has an emphasis on systems management, information process and analysis, and new uses of information technologies and management information systems for business applications and decision-making. Also included are application development, e-commerce, business telecommunications, and decision technologies.

The Finance option provides an understanding of the role of finance in the corporate and international environment and an understanding of investments at both the corporate and personal level. This option provides an understanding of the role of finance in a business context, including the development of a comprehension of business ethics.

Finance Consists of three interrelated areas:

• Financial Management: which involves the actual financial management of a firm as well as the theory of finance applicable to all other areas of finance;
• Investments: which focuses on the decision of investors as they choose investment securities and manage their investment portfolios;
• Money & Capital Markets: which deals with security markets and financial institutions.

The objective of the operations management curriculum is to prepare and stimulate student competence in the conceptual, systematic and analytical tools prerequisite for entry level and advanced positions in goods-producing and service-oriented industries. Emphasis is placed on the systems approach which stresses the concepts, techniques, and policies essential for the economical and effective design, operations and control of manpower, facilities, materials, capital and informational inputs of organizations. Students are introduced to productivity tools such as Total Quality Control, Manufacturing Resource Planning, Just-In-Time Techniques, Simulation and Animation of Production Operations, Optimized Production Techniques, Kanban Systems, Japanese Productivity Techniques, and Decision Support Systems.

The Master’s Program in Exercise Science provides an expansive study of the physiology, biomechanics, and motor control of exercise and physical activity. Students can study the mechanics, responses, and adaptations to training that relate to promoting health, preventing disease, and enhancing performance. Graduates will understand how exercise and conditioning optimize human function and capacity through current research-based curriculum, practical experiences, and original research. Fully equipped laboratories include the Physiology of Exercise and Sport (PEXS) Lab, the Motor Control Lab, and the Movement Science Lab (MSL), all of which specialize in a wide range of tasks. The Masters in Exercise Science prepares graduates for competitive fields in exercise & fitness, strength & conditioning, health & wellness, and clinical settings. This program also equips students for advanced graduate work including doctoral degrees and clinical/medical training.

The M.F.A. degree's 60-unit plan of study emphasizes choreographic exploration and presentation in addition to preparing students for teaching careers in higher education. The program provides M.F.A. candidates with theoretical and practice-based study, teaching opportunities, production skills, and a thesis project focusing on the creation of original choreography. CSULB Dance has chosen to keep the M.F.A. degree small and selective in order to provide students with ready resources and mentorship. We seek candidates whose experiences include professional-level investigation and choreography in dance beyond the baccalaureate level. Practitioners of any movement/dance genre are encouraged to apply to the M.F.A. in Dance degree program.

This degree program provides a foundation in statistical methods. The courses required ensure that the student understands how the techniques are mathematically derived and how they are applied. Statistical analysis is an essential part of any scientific investigation and is a vital tool in monitoring the quality of products and services and in forecasting.
