The Department of Journalism & Public Relations offers undergraduate programs that prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations and other media, editorial and storytelling related industries. Students take courses that provide both a strong theoretical foundation and real-life, hands-on training in the skills they need to pursue careers in mass communications. Journalism graduates become reporters, editors, bloggers, broadcasters, designers and managers at media organizations and are trained in multimedia storytelling and communicating across multiple platforms, including newspapers, magazines, online media, social media, radio, and television.

The primary goal of the undergraduate program is to provide our students with a broad education in normal and disordered processes of speech, language, hearing and swallowing. This goal has the following objectives:

• Provide our students with an understanding of normal development in speech, hearing, language, swallowing and communication
• Provide our students with an understanding of the genetic, cultural, neurological, physiological, psychological, and socioeconomic factors which can disrupt normal development in speech, hearing, language, swallowing, and communication
• Prepare students for professional graduate training as speech-language pathologists.

This degree is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of careers in the biomedical engineering field. The program builds upon a strong base of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering science to develop a clinically oriented biomedical engineer to serve medical and industrial needs. It includes courses and laboratories in biomedical engineering, physiology and biology. Elective units are available in the senior year to explore individual areas of interest.

Some students wishing to major in English have special interests or career objectives so different from those for which the other options are designed that another pattern of courses would better serve their personal educational needs. For those students, the Special Emphasis option offers an opportunity to pursue individually designed 41-unit programs of study. Student programs may center on technical writing, for example, or other writing goals; they may focus on American or English literature or literature in a particular genre, a particular historical period, or a particular theme.

A Special Emphasis program may include courses outside the Department of English closely related to a student’s focus in English studies. At least 21 units must be earned in the Department of English at CSULB and at least 21 units of the program must be upper division.

The objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Program are to produce engineers who can innovate and advance in their chosen careers in industry, academia, and public institutions while making creative contributions to the field of electrical engineering.

Our graduates:

• Are successfully employed due to their solid engineering foundation and ability to learn and apply new technology.
• Lead others by using their effective problem solving and communication skills.
• Are responsible engineers with an awareness of ethical and social-cultural issues.
• Are effective contributors to multidisciplinary teams.

The bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is designed to prepare graduates for responsible engineering positions in design, development, research, applications, and operation in the fields of communications, control systems, robotics, digital signal processing systems, electromagnetics, digital and analog electronic circuits, physical electronics, computer-aided design and power systems. The curriculum is built around a strong basic core of mathematics, physics and engineering science. This is followed by intermediate courses in electrical engineering topics and finally a senior elective sequence including a senior design seminar and terminating in a capstone design course.

This is a terminal physics master’s degree intended for students pursuing industrial professional careers.

This program is especially suited for students who either come from industry, or aim at working in industry after the Master's may choose that path or another one. The particularity about Professional Physics is that it provides some knowledge and skills in fields not usually covered in the a traditional Physics program but that are encountered and used in industry. The list of specific classes taught for that career path are given in the section "Electives and Required Classes for Each Option" above.

In addition, students following that track may not want or have time to devote for a Master's thesis that involves research at the graduate level and requires time in the laboratory. Instead, the Professional Physics path requires students to do an internship in a company and write a project document. Students interested in that career path should contact the graduate advisor.

The opportunity to explore a particular area of interest is provided by additional elective courses in the senior year. Several industry and professional society sponsored scholarships and internships are available to upper division mechanical engineering students. The undergraduate program in mechanical engineering offered at the Long Beach campus accepts both freshmen and transfer students. Students are admitted to the program following the university admission guidelines for freshmen and major specific admission criteria for transfer students.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.

The Master of Public Health in Community Health provides an opportunity for students: to specialize in global health or latino health within the general context of Public Health; to increase competence in designing, implementing, and evaluating social behavior changes programs in preparation for serving in various health agencies; prepare for teaching at college and university levels; and for administrative positions in public and private health agencies.

Exercise science centers on the effects of training and physical activity on the human body. Students will study the physiology, biomechanics, and motor control of exercise and how training can improve human function including health, disease, and performance. This option prepares students for careers in human movement and allied health fields as well as those interested in graduate work in these areas or those pursuing training in medicine and other healthcare professions.
