The graduate programs at the Erickson School of Aging Studies provide integrated, interdisciplinary professional training for leaders in the growing longevity economy. Graduates will meet a growing workforce need for leaders with professional education to serve in management positions in public, private, and non-profit/advocacy organizations providing services to older adults.

The Erickson School of Aging Studies’ goal is to prepare graduates to apply this integrated perspective in leadership positions in a broad array of aging services organizations from government agencies/organizations and advocacy/non-profit groups to a variety of positions in the for-profit business arena.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UMBC offers a world-class Ph.D. program in Chemistry. There are 19 Faculty directing state-of-the-art research, in collaboration with 50 graduate students and 15 postdoctoral fellows and research scientists. We are large enough to have cutting-edge internationally recognized research programs as well as outstanding facilities, yet we are sufficiently small so that faculty and students know each other well. Faculty research interests consist of traditional and emerging areas of chemistry and biochemistry and include inorganic and organic synthesis, drug design and delivery, quantum dot fabrication, nanomaterial reactivity, fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging probes and sensors, single-molecule spectroscopy, photochemistry and ultrafast spectroscopy, bioinorganic chemistry, computational chemistry, structural biology, cell biochemistry, microfluidics, 3D bio-printing, and solar energy conversion.

The graduate program in Computer Science provides advanced instruction and training and research opportunities to prepare students for careers in business, industry, academia and government agencies. The program reflects state-of-the-art knowledge in major theoretical and applied aspects of computation.

The applied mathematics program is designed for students interested in pursuing an advanced degree and who have earned the equivalent of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mathematics, statistics or in other mathematically oriented disciplines. The doctoral programs provide training suitable for employment in academia, industrial research and development organizations, as well as research-oriented government agencies. The master’s degree programs provide training in applications of mathematics in areas suitable for employment in industry or government agencies and can serve as preparatory steps toward advancing to a Ph.D. program.

UMBC offers an MA in TESOL and a graduate ESOL Certificate.  Established in 1979, our TESOL program is designed to train both prospective and experienced teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). It provides students with a strong theoretical and practical foundation in applied linguistics, language acquisition, ESL/EFL methodology, testing, cross-cultural studies and curriculum development.  Both programs can be taken completely in face-to-face classes on campus, completely online, or with a combination of face-to-face and online classes.

Instructional Systems Development (ISD) is one of UMBC’s most established graduate programs. Our online certificate and Master’s programs provide an innovative and engaging curriculum. We offer all courses in an online format to accommodate the schedules of busy working professionals. The interdisciplinary Public Policy program, which offers both a master’s and doctoral degree, is designed for highly motivated individuals who wish to pursue advanced graduate studies in public policy and public policy analysis. The student body includes both full-time and part-time students. Most of the courses are offered in the evening to permit students who work to pursue their degrees.

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering offers a graduate program leading to the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. The diversity of course offerings and research interests within the department and interactions with the medical and dental schools at UMB, the mathematics and physics departments at UMBC and the electrical engineering department at University of Maryland, College Park, encompass a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary or strictly electrical engineering instruction and research topics.

The Department of Physics offers graduate programs leading to the MS and PhD degrees in physics. The Department is located in the 78,000 sq. ft. Physics building (built in 1999), which contains numerous research and teaching labs, offices, classrooms, a machine shop, and a physics library. Research in the UMBC Physics Department is centered in 4 main areas: condensed matter physics, quantum optics and quantum information science, astrophysics, and atmospheric physics. Faculty members are engaged in both theoretical and experimental research in these areas.

An individual plan of graduate study in chemical engineering compatible with the student’s interest and background is offered. The primary emphasis of the program’s research activities is biotechnology and biomedical engineering. Cross-discipline thesis research projects in these areas are encouraged.
