The graduate program in Computer Science provides advanced instruction and training and research opportunities to prepare students for careers in business, industry, academia and government agencies. The program reflects state-of-the-art knowledge in major theoretical and applied aspects of computation.

The goal of the program is to develop successful leaders in today’s organization. Our graduates know how to think strategically about leading people in a diverse environment, make sound ethical decisions, and utilize technology to provide a strategic advantage at an appropriate level of risk. In addition, our graduates are prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

The Technology Management program is built around a core set of six courses that provide the foundational knowledge in leadership, communications, ethics and project management. The core courses are supplemented with technically-oriented courses in entrepreneurship, international project management, and organizational leadership. Students can also earn certificates in systems engineering, and cyber security along with the Masters degree.

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering offers a graduate program leading to the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. The diversity of course offerings and research interests within the department and interactions with the medical and dental schools at UMB, the mathematics and physics departments at UMBC and the electrical engineering department at University of Maryland, College Park, encompass a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary or strictly electrical engineering instruction and research topics.

The Systems Engineering (SE) Program at UMBC is designed to accelerate the development of systems engineers by providing practical experience that can be immediately applied on the job. Students learn from industry experts how to develop operable systems that meet customer requirements, while successfully navigating the complexities of system design.

Courses are developed and taught by senior systems engineers and address the entire systems engineering life cycle, including requirements analysis, systems architecture and design, modeling, simulation and analysis, and system implementation and test. Classes are held at convenient late afternoon or early evening times to meet the needs of working professionals.

The Master of Arts program in Historical Studies is designed to accommodate a variety of interests and career paths that connect individuals to a deeper knowledge of history. The diverse curriculum meets the needs of students wanting to enter the growing field of Public History, teach at the K-12 level, and those seeking to go on for a doctorate in history and an academic career. The program emphasizes academic and professional training in historiography, historical methods and theory, and current conceptual tools and techniques for organizing and presenting historical evidence.

Human-Centered Computing is the discipline that explores human interaction with information technologies and the use of these technologies to improve lives. The program focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive information technology systems that are both usable and accessible.

The Health Information Technology M.P.S. degree combines courses in Health Information Technology strategy, policy, and management with more technical, hands-on Health Information Technology courses that allow students to develop a formal educational program that best meets their individual career development needs.

UMBC’s Master’s in Professional Studies (M.P.S.): Industrial /Organizational Psychology explores and integrates important topics such as human resource practice, organizational behavioral management, human factors and culminates with a professional capstone experience. Understanding the importance of communication, presentation and critical thinking skills, UMBC’s M.P.S.: Industrial/Organizational Psychology covers the essential techniques and skills necessary for success in this field. Our program enables students to develop a professional portfolio while building strong relationships with faculty practitioners and industry professionals. Based in Rockville, Maryland, at the Universities at Shady Grove, the program offers evening, weekend, and select online courses for busy professionals.

The Department of Physics offers graduate programs leading to the MS and PhD degrees in physics. The Department is located in the 78,000 sq. ft. Physics building (built in 1999), which contains numerous research and teaching labs, offices, classrooms, a machine shop, and a physics library. Research in the UMBC Physics Department is centered in 4 main areas: condensed matter physics, quantum optics and quantum information science, astrophysics, and atmospheric physics. Faculty members are engaged in both theoretical and experimental research in these areas.
