The graduate program in Computer Science provides advanced instruction and training and research opportunities to prepare students for careers in business, industry, academia and government agencies. The program reflects state-of-the-art knowledge in major theoretical and applied aspects of computation.

Human-Centered Computing is the discipline that explores human interaction with information technologies and the use of these technologies to improve lives. The program focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive information technology systems that are both usable and accessible.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers courses of study leading to M.S. The department offers an Accelerated Program for students who wish to combine their undergraduate studies with a master’s degree and thesis. Graduate certificates in Mechatronics and in Computational Thermal/Fluid Dynamics consist of a sequence of four graduate courses in a specific technical area. Credits from a graduate certificate apply to the M.S. degree program.

UMBC’s Biotechnology curriculum is intended to address changes in the needs of the biotechnology industry through experiential learning. The curriculum provides advanced instruction in the life sciences, along with coursework in regulatory affairs, leadership, management, and financial management in a life science-oriented business.

The graduate programs in biological sciences are designed to offer a broad, multi-disciplinary, modern education in the life sciences coupled with the development of in-depth expertise and research training within a specialized area.

The program provides advanced instruction and research opportunities in a broad range of computer engineering areas and is focused on both the theoretical and practical aspects of the state of the art in computer engineering.

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering offers a graduate program leading to the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. The diversity of course offerings and research interests within the department and interactions with the medical and dental schools at UMB, the mathematics and physics departments at UMBC and the electrical engineering department at University of Maryland, College Park, encompass a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary or strictly electrical engineering instruction and research topics.

The Human Services Psychology graduate program’s primary commitment is to train psychologists for research and service in the public sector, placing special emphasis on the problems of inner-city, minority and poor populations, children, youth and the aged.

The MPS program prepares working professionals in both small and large organizations who have an interest in incorporating entrepreneurial thinking and innovative practices into their workplace or community. The program will also be of great value to those with an interest in starting their own company or driving social change through innovation. Core courses will provide students with an understanding of the fundamental building blocks for driving innovation.

Beyond the core courses, three pathways will allow students to specialize in one of three areas: social entrepreneur, technical entrepreneur and intra entrepreneur.

The graduate program in Intercultural Communication allows students to develop advanced foreign language proficiency, to train them to function comfortably and effectively in intercultural situations, and to prepare them for specific career goals through individual courses of study and internships. Students and faculty come from various parts of the world, and participation in the program is itself a significant intercultural experience.
