The goal of the program prepares students from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds for careers in data science. In the core courses, students will receive a fundamental understanding of data science through classes that highlight machine learning, data analysis and data management. The core courses will also introduce students to ethical and legal implications surrounding data science.

Beyond the core courses, students will take three courses in domain specific pathways developed in collaboration with academic departments across the university. Through these pathways, students will be able to utilize the skills and techniques learned in the core courses within their own field or area of expertise.

The Master of Arts in Texts, Technologies, and Literature provides an opportunity for advanced students to further their understanding of literature and a broad array of other texts, including digital, academic and those that function in everyday use, in relation to both historical and contemporary culture. The program welcomes students with undergraduate majors in such areas as American Studies, Media Studies, Communication Studies, Modern Languages and Literature, and Gender and Women’s Studies, as well as English. It is designed to accommodate students with a variety of interests and career paths, including those who are considering an academic career in English, whether in Rhetoric and Composition, Communication and Media Studies, or Literature; those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. (for example, in UMBC’s Language, Literacy, and Culture Ph.D. program or the Ph.D. in English at Morgan State University); high school teachers looking for advanced training; and those entering communications, editorial, and/or digital media professions. Students may specialize in the study of print-based or multi-modal texts of particular periods or genres; rhetoric, communication, and composition; or language use and production in various settings.

UMBC’s Master’s in Professional Studies (M.P.S.): Industrial /Organizational Psychology explores and integrates important topics such as human resource practice, organizational behavioral management, human factors and culminates with a professional capstone experience. Understanding the importance of communication, presentation and critical thinking skills, UMBC’s M.P.S.: Industrial/Organizational Psychology covers the essential techniques and skills necessary for success in this field. Our program enables students to develop a professional portfolio while building strong relationships with faculty practitioners and industry professionals. Based in Rockville, Maryland, at the Universities at Shady Grove, the program offers evening, weekend, and select online courses for busy professionals.

The Master of Arts program in Historical Studies is designed to accommodate a variety of interests and career paths that connect individuals to a deeper knowledge of history. The diverse curriculum meets the needs of students wanting to enter the growing field of Public History, teach at the K-12 level, and those seeking to go on for a doctorate in history and an academic career. The program emphasizes academic and professional training in historiography, historical methods and theory, and current conceptual tools and techniques for organizing and presenting historical evidence.

The Environmental Engineering (ENEN) Program emphasizes research in environmental engineering and water resources. Environmental engineers identify and design solutions for environmental problems, such as providing safe drinking water, treating and safely disposing of wastes, controlling water pollution, maintaining air quality and remediating contaminated sites. Water resources engineering is a profession that deals with the use, management and conservation of natural water resources above and below ground surface to assure availability and affordability of safe and clean sources of water for society.

UMBC’s Intermedia and Digital Arts M.F.A. Program is where interdisciplinary artists seek to expand or reinvent their professional practice. The IMDA program is committed to art that poses unique conceptual and social challenges while offering an environment that provides artists a studio, teaching opportunities, courses in emerging methods, contemporary art and theory, engaged faculty, premier visiting artists and high-end research centers that are typical of a research university.

The Master of Science in Engineering Management focuses on advanced engineering developments and the management of enterprises and government programs specializing in engineering activities. The aim of the M.S. in Engineering Management is to provide students with a basic and focused set of advanced business/management skills coupled with advanced skills in a specific technical area commensurate with students’ interests and likely technical employment.

The Department of Emergency Health Services at UMBC offers a graduate program leading to a Master of Science degree. This degree is also a core component of the UMB-UMBC post-residency fellowship in emergency medical services and incorporates offerings from several university departments at both UMBC and UMB.

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering offers a graduate program leading to the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. The diversity of course offerings and research interests within the department and interactions with the medical and dental schools at UMB, the mathematics and physics departments at UMBC and the electrical engineering department at University of Maryland, College Park, encompass a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary or strictly electrical engineering instruction and research topics.

The graduate program in Applied Sociology prepares students for careers in program development and evaluation, policy analysis, and research in the fields of health, aging, and diversity and gender.
