Journalism is changing rapidly in the 21st century, with stories moving across a range of platforms – from television and the web to radio, newspapers and magazines, as well as across social networks like Twitter and Facebook. This means that the budding journalist needs to know not only how to gather facts and write informative stories, but also how to work with audio and video clips, create and use web sites, and be adept at distributing news through social media.

Economics - General Economics
Economics is the study of how to critically evaluate problems and make well-reasoned decisions. As such, the Economics major is particularly well suited to prepare students for the career challenges in the 21st century by helping them develop important skills, including the ability to apply a general framework of analysis for solving real-world problems, conduct mathematical and statistical analysis, work with data to address specific issues, and effectively communicate, in written and oral form, with others.

A student can earn either a B.S. or a B.A. degree in Economics. The major offers students the flexibility to select a set of courses that simultaneously satisfy the requirements of the major while focusing on a specific area such as business or pre-law. The curriculum is highlighted by a senior project required of Economics majors that gives each student an opportunity to work with an individual faculty member on a research project selected by the student.

The requirement of 33 hours allows the flexibility to consider a second major or minor as a way to expand your career possibilities and distinguish yourself from your peers. The list of majors students most frequently combine with Economics includes Business Administration, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Political Science.

Network and Telecommunications Management
Network and telecommunications systems are the backbone of the information age. They include systems we use every day, such as the internet, text messaging, and watching TV. Their main goal is to send a message from one point to another without losing or changing the message.

Professionals in the field design and manage networks. They keep up with technology trends and adapt networks to meet current needs.

The Network and Telecommunications Management major studies the theory and application of cutting-edge technology. We also cover policy issues dealing with data, image, video, and voice delivery. Understanding these policies is essential when designing and managing networks.

Managerial Economics goes beyond the limits of traditional economics and business majors, blending a thorough grounding in economic theory with business knowledge and applications. Students in the Managerial Economics sequence receive in-depth training to economics and quantitative methods, problem-solving strategies, critical thinking and effective communication skills.

Students who study Economics will learn to use ideas developed by economists and to investigate current issues both in the public and private sectors.

Studio Arts Photography
The Wonsook Kim School of Art offers a comprehensive list of sequence options for a student interested in Studio Arts. The following are offered as areas of specialization: Ceramics, Drawing, Expanded Media, Glass, Printmaking, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Video, and Wood / Metal Design.

Following a first year foundations curriculum, students can choose a sequence within an individual studio. Within each sequence, faculty are actively engaged in introducing students to various technical skills and ideas specific to that discipline. The cohesive sequencing of courses within each studio area allows the student to build skills and knowledge towards a highly sophisticated level of work in that field of exploration.

Political Communication is concerned with being actively engaged with local, regional, state, national, and international issues and how the power of information, persuasion, and strategic message design can be used to understand and affect outcomes at those levels, particularly in the area of governance and governmental and societal behavior. Students become knowledgeable and skilled in the use of political messages to promote causes, candidates, campaigns, etc.

The Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications Economics sequence combines training in basic economic theory and statistical methods with specialized training in the theory, history and institutions of economic of regulation. Students develop skills in analyzing regulatory policy and in communicating the results. In addition, students may have the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience as an intern with an employer in the telecommunications, electric power, or natural gas industries, or with an appropriate government agency.

Graduates are awarded a master’s degree in Applied Economics with a sequence in Electricity, Natural Gas and Telecommunications Economics. Associated with the sequence is the Institute for Regulatory Policy Studies. The institute provides a key link between Illinois State University and the telecommunications, electric power, and natural gas industries.

Students selecting this sequence will be prepared for effective and successful careers as economists, analysts and planners with firms in the natural gas, electric, and telecommunications industries. The option is also suitable for careers with governmental agencies responsible for the regulation of public utilities, consumer advocacy organizations, and firms providing consulting and ancillary services.

Our master’s degree in Applied Economics links basic economic theory and statistical techniques to real-world problems faced by decision makers. With emphasis on extensive training in econometrics and forecasting, exposure to working with large and diverse data sets, and a wide range of statistical software, this program gives students the applied skills that employers demand and provides those pursuing advanced degrees an edge in gaining admission to top Ph.D. programs.

The Applied Economics sequence is designed to train students in the quantitative and applied economic skills that will best enhance their future employment opportunities as economists, research analysts, or planners in the private and public sectors. While the curriculum is structured as a terminal degree in applied economics and many graduates have advanced to doctoral-level programs in economics and in related disciplines, the program is also well suited for individuals who wish to return to school to obtain a graduate degree in a business-related discipline for the purpose of career advancement.

The Applied Economics program is a STEM designated degree, which focuses on the systematic study of mathematical and statistical analysis of economic phenomena and problems. STEM designated degree programs offer additional benefits for students, including potential grant funded opportunities and, for international students, extended OPT study options.
