Music Composition
Many people do not start pursuing composition until late in their music studies. Students who enjoy improvising or learning about how music is put together may be composers. Illinois State University composition majors receive reading sessions from nationally prominent ensembles such as Ensemble Dal Niente, Fulcrum Point, and ensemble mise-en. Our annual Red Note New Music Festival brings in prestigious composers such as Pulitzer Prize winners Steven Stucky and William Bolcom to campus.

The Applied Community and Economic Development (ACED) sequence is an interdisciplinary program that enables those who are passionate about social change through service to take their careers to the next level. The sequence is designed for returned Peace Corps Volunteers and students with other development experiences (e.g., AmeriCorps, nonprofit work).

Family and Consumer Sciences - Teacher Education
The FCS teacher education program has a strong reputation of producing high-caliber teachers. It focuses on the fundamentals of teaching and prepares FCS teacher candidates in:

• Human Development
• Parenting and Child Development
• Sewing
• Textile and Fashion
• Food, Nutrition, and Hospitality
• Interior Design
• Consumer Education

Our program meets the Illinois teacher licensure requirements. Teacher candidates can get an Illinois teacher's license in a four or two-year degree program . Graduates are qualified to teach 6th through 12th grades in all areas of FCS. Endorsement options are also available.

The Quantitative Psychology graduate sequence focuses on the use of quantitative methods in the solution of problems in theoretical and applied psychology. The sequence provides critical foundation preparation for advanced graduate study and can facilitate entry into careers in community college teaching or in the business-industrial sector.

The objectives of the sequence include building a solid foundation of basic psychological principles that help students to understand and explain human behavior. Students are trained to be adept at using computers and technology in data collection, management, and analysis based on a proficiency in common statistical software packages as well as using the Internet in data collection and analysis.

The mass media program at ISU consists of two tracks:

As a mass media major, you will learn about the history of the media industries while practicing the business and creation of media in their coursework and hands-on experiences at our student media outlets:

The study of philosophy provides the opportunity to address these and other profound topics and questions in a critical and systematic way.

Accounting - Financial Accounting
The Accounting - Financial Accounting sequence prepares students for positions in public accounting, managerial accounting, governmental accounting, taxation, and auditing. This sequence is designed to meet the minimum formal accounting-content requirements to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination.

Criminal Justice Sciences

• Earning a criminal justice degree empowers you to make positive contributions to society.
• The field offers plenty of variety that leads to an exciting and engaging career. Professionals enforce laws, protect citizens, rehabilitate offenders, help victims, and develop programs to help prevent crime.
• The criminal justice program at Illinois State examines policing, courts, and corrections. We do this with a social science point of view. As a student, you'll explore human behavior and take an in-depth look at the issues and circumstances that lead to crime. This gives you a well-rounded perspective and prepares you to be a leader for positive change.    
• You'll also gain all the skills you need to be successful in your career. We'll teach you how to interview, develop programs, promote community well-being, and analyze crime hotspots.

Master of Music in Performance students are afforded intensive applied study with a professionally accomplished artist-teacher. Performance degrees are offered in all orchestral and band instruments, as well as in piano, guitar, and voice.

    The MM in Performance prepares you for a career in:

• Symphony orchestras
• Military ensembles
• Broadway
• Opera houses
• Teaching at the college level

    The MM in Performance curriculum includes:

• Applied music
• Music pedagogy and literature
• Analysis for Performers
• History
• Research
• Ensembles
• Electives which could include: Non-degree recitals, music technology, music history, music theory, music education, music therapy, music business, applied music, jazz studies and non-music courses
• A written comprehensive exam and a recital are required for graduation.

The Mathematics sequence in the Mathematics major first provides students with a strong foundation in Mathematics and then gives students the flexibility to explore various aspects of the discipline.

There is also the flexibility within the Mathematics major for a student to pursue a minor in a related field of study. Such a program can prepare students for jobs in industry and government as well as prepare students for graduate study in Mathematics.
