Sociology at Illinois State prepares you to change the world you live in.

Sociology studies people, organizations, and systems. In the field, this is known as social structures.

Our family, jobs, the law, economy, and government are some of the most influential social structures in our lives. Sociology helps us understand how these structures work so we can make the world better.

It examines data to get to the root cause of problems and issues, such as racism, divorce, poverty, and crime. Sociology also develops solutions that move us in a positive direction.

Being part of our program, you’ll join other students who share your passion for helping others. We’ll help you discover how you can be a major player in sparking positive change. You’ll learn about the power of social structures, how decisions get made, and how social movements gain traction. We also take a close look at cultures, diversity, and inclusion.

Our program applies academic concepts to the real world and helps you develop the crucial skills employers need.

Most of our students do not become Sociologists. Instead, you can find them doing important work in non-profits, law enforcement, business, health care, and more.

Accounting - Business Information Systems
The Accounting - Business Information Systems sequence is designed to prepare students for entry level accounting positions requiring significant training in business information systems. This preparation is particularly valuable in accounting consulting positions, certain auditing positions, and in many progressive industrial positions.

Music Business
At Illinois State University, we are proud to offer the Bachelor of Science in Music Business degree. The Music Business sequence exposes musicians to the vast opportunities for careers in the music industry. Students examine topics from songwriting, revenue flow, industry mechanics, and entrepreneurial practices and visit with guest speakers ranging from classical music publishers to major label A&R people, from DIY punk musicians to hip-hop producers. The program culminates in time in a local recording studio and requires an internship in the field. In addition to the core music requirements, students need to complete 25 hours of coursework in the School of Music and the nationally recognized College of Business.

Food and Nutrition Management
The Food and Nutrition Management program at llinois State covers the broad field of nutrition with a special focus on the food and beverage industry, rather than science. The program combines business and management principles with food service and hospitality skills.

Family and Consumer Sciences - Teacher Education

The FCS teacher education program has a strong reputation of producing high-caliber teachers. It focuses on the fundamentals of teaching and prepares FCS teacher candidates in:

• Food, Nutrition, and Hospitality
• Interior Design
• Consumer Education

Our program meets the Illinois teacher licensure requirements. Teacher candidates can get an Illinois teacher's license in a four or two-year degree program . Graduates are qualified to teach 6th through 12th grades in all areas of FCS. Endorsement options are also available.

Accountancy
The primary objective of the Master of Science in Accountancy program is to provide candidates preparing for professional careers in accounting a greater breadth and depth in accounting education than is possible in a baccalaureate or Master of Business Administration program.

The degree builds upon the broad framework of the undergraduate degree in accounting. Graduate accounting courses emphasize study of current accounting literature, critical thinking, case studies, accounting theory, and written and oral communication. Class sizes are designed to be small to encourage interaction between the professor and each student.

Studio Arts Drawing
The Wonsook Kim School of Art offers a comprehensive list of sequence options for a student interested in Studio Arts. The following are offered as areas of specialization: Ceramics, Drawing, Expanded Media, Glass, Printmaking, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Video, and Wood / Metal Design.

Following a first year foundations curriculum, students can choose a sequence within an individual studio. Within each sequence, faculty are actively engaged in introducing students to various technical skills and ideas specific to that discipline. The cohesive sequencing of courses within each studio area allows the student to build skills and knowledge towards a highly sophisticated level of work in that field of exploration.

Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) at Illinois State gives you the knowledge and tools necessary to study important issues in computer science to obtain productive employment or pursue advanced degrees.

Our program emphasizes foundational knowledge in computer science and programmatic application of fundamental concepts in leading-edge applications.

It is appropriate for a range of students, including industry computing professionals seeking career advancement, students wishing to expand on their undergraduate computer science work and/or prepare for doctoral degree, and individuals wishing to make a career change.

Music - New Media Composition
We hear original music content everywhere via video games, films, television shows, or online media. Students interested in creating original music composition content for new media such as these should major in New Media Composition.

Students take classes from faculty of both the School of Music and the Creative Technologies Program. They will have the opportunity to have original compositions for acoustic instruments read by large ensembles such as the Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra, Illinois State University Wind Symphony, and the Illinois State University choral ensembles. In addition, they will take courses from Creative Technologies faculty on the latest technology topics in sound editing, sound design, and virtual reality programming.

New Media Composition students are able to receive readings and performances by world-class guest artists and student ensembles and work with Creative Technologies faculty on cutting edge technology projects in sound design, virtual reality environment design, and multi-media composition.

Interior Design

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a Master of Science or Master of Arts degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a sequence in Interior Design. The master’s program expands knowledge on creativity, sustainability, health and wellness, and evidence-based design.

Students can tailor this sequence to focus on theory and research and further develop their design skills in commercial design, cultural/global design, healthcare facilities design, and universal design. The sequence is suitable for both designers and architects who want to teach or become research practitioners, as well as those who want to advance their undergraduate degree as a practitioner in the field.
