Anthropology
Anthropology studies humans from evolution to the present day. It thrives on curiosity and seeks to answer the questions we’ve always wondered, like:

• Where do we come from?
• What does it mean to be human?
• Why do people act the way they do?
• Why are things the way they are?

The journey to these answers is fascinating and Anthropology at Illinois State tackles these big questions head-on.

As a student in our program, you’ll dive deep into cultures, language, and artifacts from the ancient past. You’ll see firsthand how anthropology has major impacts on issues we face today, like poverty, health, and social justice.

The Wonsook Kim School of Art offers a comprehensive list of sequence options for a student interested in Studio Arts. The following are offered as areas of specialization: Ceramics, Drawing, Expanded Media, Glass, Printmaking, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Video, and Wood / Metal Design.

Following a first year foundations curriculum, students can choose a sequence within an individual studio. Within each sequence, faculty are actively engaged in introducing students to various technical skills and ideas specific to that discipline. The cohesive sequencing of courses within each studio area allows the student to build skills and knowledge towards a highly sophisticated level of work in that field of exploration.

Exercise Science is the study of movement and the associated functional responses and adaptations the body makes as a result of movement/exercise.

The Health and Human Performance (HHP) sequence gives you a well-rounded foundation in areas of Exercise Science, including physiology, biomechanics, and sports psychology. HHP also studies how different exercises and fitness programs affect the human body. 

Program graduates typically work in the fitness and wellness industry.

The Computer Systems Technology program prepares technology professionals to manage computer systems and develop applications in a variety of settings. Students develop knowledge and communication skills to successfully collaborate on projects.

The sociology field is broad and our program reflects that. We'll give you a solid foundation in data analysis and research methods to prepare you to work in a data-driven society. From there, what you study is up to you. You can choose to focus on areas of sociology that engage you and meet your goals.

We offer lots of opportunities for you to take a deep dive into your passion. In addition to a thesis, you can work one-on-one with faculty on research projects that make positive impacts in communities around the world.

Economics - Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications Economics
The Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications Economics sequence combines training in basic economic theory and statistical methods with specialized training in the theory, history and institutions of economic of regulation. Students develop skills in analyzing regulatory policy and in communicating the results. In addition, students may have the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience as an intern with an employer in the telecommunications, electric power, or natural gas industries, or with an appropriate government agency.

Graduates are awarded a master’s degree in Applied Economics with a sequence in Electricity, Natural Gas and Telecommunications Economics. Associated with the sequence is the Institute for Regulatory Policy Studies. The institute provides a key link between Illinois State University and the telecommunications, electric power, and natural gas industries.

Students selecting this sequence will be prepared for effective and successful careers as economists, analysts and planners with firms in the natural gas, electric, and telecommunications industries. The option is also suitable for careers with governmental agencies responsible for the regulation of public utilities, consumer advocacy organizations, and firms providing consulting and ancillary services.

This is a STEM designated degree, which focuses on the systematic study of mathematical and statistical analysis of economic phenomena and problems. STEM designated degree programs offer additional benefits for students, including potential grant funded opportunities and, for international students, extended OPT study options.

The FCS teacher education program has a strong reputation of producing high-caliber teachers. It focuses on the fundamentals of teaching and prepares FCS teacher candidates in:

The bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology provides a solid foundation in the life sciences for students seeking careers in medicine, government, or entry-level positions in biotechnology as well as the pharmaceutical industry.

The degree also serves as a basis for graduate studies in biology. While the degree may satisfy many requirements for professional and graduate programs, it is important to consult the admission requirements for a particular program as early as possible. Recreation and Park Administration - Recreation Management
Recreation Management professionals plan, organize, and lead experiences for people with diverse backgrounds and interests. Experiences range from sports and crafts, to camping and other special interests. They also work in a variety of settings including parks, sport facilities, community centers, retirement villages, camps, and tourism attractions.

Students in this major put theory into practice by completing two internships. There are also opportunities to attend conferences, participate in clubs, and study abroad. These experiences help students develop a professional network.

Faculty in Recreation Management have won awards for teaching, research, and service. They also conduct and publish research as well as write industry-leading textbooks.
