Philosophy

Interested in graduate school? According to the Educational Testing Service, philosophy majors earn higher GRE scores than students from any other discipline. Anthropology
Anthropology—the study of humankind, past and present—has the widest scope of all the social sciences. To enhance your degree, we offer the opportunity to complete an honors program, study abroad, or design your own personalized program.  Engineering Design
In the world of engineering design, you might be responsible for creating the next new camera phone, innovating a self-driving car — practically anything. The possibilities are endless, and at UAB, you can tailor your major to help you succeed in almost any aspect of engineering design.
So what exactly goes in a degree in engineering design? For one, our program includes a 15-hour engineering design and innovation core as the backbone to your education. It’s a three-course progression in engineering design as well as a two-semester capstone project. Plus we’re going to load your noodle up with all the fundamental math, science, physics, and engineering skills that you’ll need to embark on your career.
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with a major in Engineering Design offers undergraduates a unique opportunity to earn an engineering degree tailored to their interest, with an emphasis on innovation and design.
The Engineering Design program is intended for students whose academic/scientific interests aren’t aligned with an existing engineering discipline or limited to one engineering discipline. The ideal student will be highly adaptable to different learning environments, prepared to work in interdisciplinary teams, and adept at hands-on learning.

Music
With a music degree, you can learn more than how to make a beautiful, artistic sound—you can learn all about music technology, composition, theory, and more. With your passion and degree, you can pursue jobs in music production, teaching, or performing.

To start on the right note, you will need to determine your music career goal. In addition to your regular coursework, we'll encourage you to audition for various student performances. We have many ensembles and other performance opportunities for you to choose from. If you concentrate on music technology, we'll ask you to do an internship. If you focus on music education, we'll want you to complete the necessary requirements to teach K-12. Either way, your advisor will be there to help you every step of the way.

Our infrastructure demands the attentive eye of someone like you to sustain productive communities, from our roads, buildings, and dams to air quality and wastewater treatment—and even traffic patterns. At UAB, we can give you the engineering, design, and planning background you need to be a leader in civil engineering.

To prepare you for your career, we've designed a program that you can tailor based on your interests and goals. We have four concentrations for you to choose from, including construction engineering management, in which you can learn about cost and revenue estimating, risk, and more. Finally, we're going to offer you the opportunity to earn a certificate in environmental, structural, sustainable, and transportation engineering, or engineering construction management. In the end, you'll have the best chance at an education designed to meet your specific career goals.

As a foreign languages student, not only will you learn another language, you'll also gain a deeper understanding of culture, art, history, and philosophy. These will be critically important skills for you in fields like journalism, medicine, tourism, government, social work, and more.

To succeed in these careers, you absolutely must know how to communicate effectively in local, national, and global communities alike. That's why we offer you traditional language, culture, civilization, linguistics, and literature classes. But that's just the beginning. You can also take courses such as Literature in Translation, Film and Cultural Studies, Foreign Media and Society, U.S. Latino Topics, Applied Linguistics, and Languages for the Professions. With internships and opportunities to study abroad, you can expand your worldview even further.

Computer Science
Computer science, simply put, is about computers, computer systems, and how they work. Careers in computer science have grown and become more important as computers have become a part of almost every industry.

To help prepare you for the workforce or graduate school, we actually reduced the math, science, and core computer science requirements to earn a BA in Computer Science. Why? So you can earn a non-computing minor or double major in a field such as art studio, biology, criminal justice, entrepreneurship, or professional writing. With that diverse background, you can apply the tools and techniques of computer science to solving problems in science, arts, humanities, business, engineering, and other areas. Your computer science classes will include Object-Oriented Programming, Computer Organization and Assembly Language Programming, and Algorithms and Data Structures, among others.
Computer science skills and techniques are routinely used in several areas of the arts, the humanities, and beyond, and graduates with computer science skills and the ability to create innovative solutions are in high demand.

New B.A. programs in computer science are emerging across the country. What distinguishes UAB's program is its inclusion of a minor, giving you significant exposure to a second discipline. Do you have a burning desire to express yourself through a variety of art media? Create art that transforms the world around you through a career in art direction, graphic design, museum curation, art conservation — or just about any other profession you can imagine.

From the moment you set foot on campus, we'll immerse you in the arts. Your coursework will teach you multiple disciplines of fine arts and design, and your access to UAB's Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts and the Birmingham Museum of Art will give you an intimate exposure to exhibits, displays, and special events. Choose an art studio concentration, and we'll encourage you to experiment with various styles. Concentrate in art history, and you'll focus on visual literacy and critical thinking.

In order to succeed, every business has to have an accountant like you keeping track of its resources. Our faculty can give you the financial training you need for a career at a public accounting firm, company, governmental agency, not-for-profit organization, or elsewhere.

In addition to your core classes, you can choose concentration classes in forensic accounting or information technology. The number one asset you'll need for success is a keen understanding of today's world economy. That's why we offer you the option to focus on a variety of areas, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Your curriculum will cover such topics as economics, socio-political awareness, and cultural literacy. We'll help you line up a study-abroad opportunity, participation in the Model Arab League, an internship with an international business, or another experience.
