International Year One General will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor's degree program at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Psychology
Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. With a thorough knowledge of psychology, you can offer great value in a wide variety of fields, including business, advertising, politics, law, education, and mental health counseling.

But first, you need to have a solid foundation of psychology theory in order to understand why people do what they do. That's why we begin your education with courses such as Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Brain, Mind, and Behavior. Then we'll take your education outside the classroom by giving you the chance to complete a research project or community service. Best of all, you could get the opportunity to gain real-world experience by participating in professional shadowing at a nearby treatment facility.

African American Studies
The BA in African American Studies is an interdisciplinary program examining African life and culture, both on the African continent and the diaspora. As a student, you will learn about the African and African American experience from different perspectives including English, history, political science, sociology, and public health.

We are committed to educating and providing our students with knowledge and critical thinking skills to:

• Address social justice issues,
• Promote the diversity of ideas, and
• Understand the experiences, traditions, and history of African descended people.

Students joining our Integrated Master Program (IMP) will benefit from a degree-seeking I-20 while still receiving the additional support provided by INTO UAB, from the day they apply through their first semester on campus. In the Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering (MSECE) program, you’ll be able to learn advanced skills in electrical and computer engineering or continue on a path for entry into a doctoral program. The curriculum builds on the foundation of knowledge and skills you established when you earned your bachelor's.

The MSECE provides advanced study in specialized areas such as computer software and networking, control, microelectronics and embedded systems, signal and image processing, power systems and telecommunication. You'll have the option of completing a thesis (involving research and an oral defense) or a non-thesis route (involving extra coursework and a graduate project).

Biology
Biology is the study of all living things—from molecules to entire ecosystems. And when you study all those things, you can do almost anything. Our alumni work in genetics, microbiology, spinal cord injury, brain development, and education, as well as in wildlife and nature conservation.

In our biology program, you'll have an amazing experience. For one, you'll be taught by our world-renowned faculty and scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories. You can even do fieldwork at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on Alabama's Gulf Coast or in the Bahamas, Costa Rica, the Galápagos Islands, or Antarctica. Once you've completed your program track—Integrated Biology, Marine Science, or Molecular Biology—you'll have the prerequisites you need for medical, dental, optometry, or pharmacy school.  You can even get certified to teach biology or general science through the UABTeach program.

As a criminal justice student, you'll not only learn about crime and justice—you'll also gain critical skills in analyzing and communicating. In fact, with your degree, you can pursue careers in law enforcement – including cyber crime investigation – and social services, business, and education.

We’ll train you in the areas of corrections, criminology, forensic science, juvenile justice, law, policing, computer forensics, and other positions. Your courses will teach you the theories of crime and delinquency, as well as the logic, procedures, and ethical foundations associated with our nation's justice system. Finally, during your senior year, we'll set you up with an internship at an agency such as the FBI, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, or the Jefferson County Family Court.

In finance, we'll teach you how to address an age-old problem: How do you make more money and grow your business? With your BS, we'll train you to add value to all sorts of businesses, including multinational banks, investment firms, and other companies in every industry.

But before you can build that wealth, you need the educational foundation required to fuel your success. That's why our program begins with an exploration of financial planning, investing, valuation, risk management and more. After your core courses, we'll help you choose a track that best fits your career goals. Not to mention, our award-winning, student-managed investment fund, the UAB Green and Gold Fund, will give you real-world experience. Best of all, everything's available both on campus and online.

To succeed, healthcare providers need quality administrators like you to keep their organizations running as smoothly as possible. We can teach you the skills you need for leadership positions at hospitals, health systems, physician group practices, long-term care facilities, consulting firms, and insurance companies.

This program is offered in two formats – executive and residential – and your previous experience will determine which format is better for you. If you're a seasoned health professional, you'll enroll in the executive format, where we'll build on your years of experience and help prepare you for a senior management position through a combination of distance-learning courses and on-campus sessions. If you're looking to make the transition to health administration, you'll do the residential format, where you'll learn about the fundamentals of the field as well as get various networking opportunities. Although each format has slightly different curriculums, there are some similarities. Your courses will include health policy, strategic planning, health law, organization theory, economics, and marketing. The executive track offers a capstone experience, while the residential requires that you complete an administrative residency, internship, and capstone course.

The Master of Science in Cyber Security (formerly known as Computer Forensics and Security Management) (MSSec) is an interdisciplinary program that prepares graduates for a professional career in the field of cyber security by developing in them the necessary skills crucial for success. The program also provides current practitioners the opportunity to obtain advanced-level training to facilitate career advancement. The program includes a set of core, required courses and the opportunity to select from a default option or two tracks of specialization.

Entrepreneurship
Many of the world’s leading companies began as student startups. Could one of your big ideas be next? At UAB, we can teach you how to turn your idea into a business, preparing you to be an entrepreneur who adapts to change, solves problems, and can thrive in all sorts of environments.

You see, before you have a big idea, you have to find the right problem to solve. Our curriculum is designed to show you how to fall in love with a problem so that you can find the right solution. Then we want you to take that solution and turn it into a viable business. To do this, you’ll take required courses like The Entrepreneurial Mindset, Entrepreneurial Strategy and Operations, and The Entrepreneurial Engagement Seminar, along with core business classes that cover the basics of marketing, finance, management, and more. You’ll even take Public Speaking to help you develop the skills to deliver that perfect pitch. We also want your education to be full of hands-on experience. Because how else will you really learn how to launch a business? You can pursue an internship with a local start-up, join a team of students exploring business ventures or collaborating on new ideas in one of UAB’s extracurricular programs, or complete a directed study in entrepreneurship.

Chemistry
The UAB Department of Chemistry provides students with the education and practical experience they need to participate in new scientific frontiers. From our unique peer learning and teaching program to our world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities, UAB Chemistry advances the boundaries of chemical scholarship and discoveries.
Chemistry connects the basic sciences with all of the applied sciences, including medicine and engineering. The foundations of the world’s economy in the next generation, including advanced materials, fuels, energy, nanomaterials, medicines, sensors, biotechnology, and genomics, will all have chemistry at their core. As a result, a degree in chemistry opens the door to a wide variety of careers, such as medicine, pharmacy, health professions, forensics, and research. Regardless of what you want to do, UAB Chemistry will help you get there.
