With 48 hours of computer science courses, the Bachelor of Science (BS) offers students a more technical route than the Bachelor of Arts (BA), which requires 36 hours. Your coursework will include math and natural sciences, and core courses such as Discrete Structures, Automated and Formal Languages, and Programming Languages will give you a foundation in designing, building, and understanding computer-based systems, processes, and programs. Honors students may wish to research, write, and publish a formal scientific report or give an oral presentation. You'll even be able to earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach and apply your STEM knowledge in the classroom.

High School Education
As a high-school teacher, you can have a tremendous influence over a person during some of their most formative years. In fact, what you teach someone can last a lifetime. At UAB, we can teach you the skills needed to become a high school educator.

To get started, you must first decide what subject you want to teach: science, social studies, math, or English language arts. Then, you'll learn critical skills, competencies, and instructional strategies from our nationally-renowned faculty. We'll also give you hands-on experience through internships and practicums. Finally, if you're a future math or science teacher, you may want to enroll in UABTeach, our four-year program that lets you earn a STEM degree while also qualifying for certification as a classroom teacher.

The BS in Public Health degree offers a broad overview of public health research and practice, introducing you to the multiple focus areas within public health (e.g., epidemiology, health behavior, health policy). Our students also gain hands-on experience working with community partners to improve the health of populations. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the BS in Public Health degree is designed to prepare students to:

• Identify key health challenges facing a community, based on evaluation and synthesis of public health information.
• Recognize the importance of evidence-based strategies to address public health challenges facing a community.
• Advocate for improved health in the community, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

For health care to be effective, patients must receive care in a quality and safe environment. Providers rely on people like you to steer them toward a quality-driven, efficiency-minded, and high-reliability environment. You can learn the skills you need as an administrator, physician, nurse, patient safety officer, or quality manager.

In fact, we specifically designed our program specifically so you'll get critical applied instruction that you can integrate with the daily tasks of your profession. Your coursework will focus on leadership skills, data system design, patient safety, policy, and more. You'll also take an elective to round out your curriculum. Your choices here will run the gamut from Six Sigma seminars to lectures on health insurance and cost-effectiveness analysis. As a philosophy student, you won't just study ideas and thoughts related to these questions, you'll study critical thinking, problem solving, and how to analyze and argue. We want this foundation to help you excel in fields such as medicine, law, journalism, politics, business, and more.

Interested in graduate school? According to the Educational Testing Service, philosophy majors earn higher GRE scores than students from any other discipline. It's no wonder, considering the lengths we go to in preparing you. Not only will we teach you the methods, history, and problems in philosophy, but we'll train you to apply this knowledge in the field. Best of all, because you have your own unique goals, we'll help you customize a curriculum to fit your needs.
