Biotechnology is responsible for a lot—from beer, cheese, and bread to biofuels and many other modern breakthroughs. At UAB, we can teach you the fundamentals of biotechnology and how to develop and launch new products and technology.

As a matter of fact, one of our most important goals is to help you make your ideas a reality. To do this, we'll enroll you in classes that are divided into categories such as principles of biotechnology, applications in biotechnology, bench to commercialization, and professional skills. But that's just the beginning. We believe real-world experience is critical, and you're going to get plenty of it. There'll be guest speakers who have discovered innovative technologies and created new products. Plus, we're going to put you to work with actual biotech companies so you can help develop real solutions.

If you're interested in learning how peace can make a difference in individuals, families, communities, and nations, consider earning an MA in Anthropology of Peace and Human Rights. Our graduates go on to careers in law, teaching, public service, international affairs, business, and journalism.

At UAB, we've never been more focused on peace, justice, human rights, and ecology than we are right now. It's why we established the UAB Institute for Human Rights. It's also why, in 2017, we established this program. It's a two-year master's program with coursework in social and cultural anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology. As a student, you'll work with your advisor to choose one of two plans necessary to complete your degree. With Plan 1 (thesis), you'll take five elective courses (15 semester hours) and enroll in six semester hours of thesis credit. If your goal is to earn your PhD, this is the better option for you. With Plan 2 (non-thesis option), you'll take seven elective courses (21 semester hours), and we'll require you to pass a comprehensive final exam before graduation.

International Year One General will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor's degree program at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. After successfully completing the Pathway program, you are guaranteed to enter your next semester of study. This transition to university from an INTO program is called progression.

Immunology
Immunology is the study of the immune system, including the cells, organs, tissues, and the function the system plays in protecting humans against infectious diseases. It's the perfect foundation for a career in health care, biomedical research, or nearly anything that requires a white coat.

In fact, immunology is a collaborative field, and that's why your training will come from a broad spectrum of the scientific community. You'll take classes in biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, taught through both our medical school and biology department. And, we’ll help you prepare for a continued education or career in fields such as biochemistry, cell biology, cancer biology, infectious diseases, neurobiology, endocrinology, and cardiology.

The BS in Public Health degree offers a broad overview of public health research and practice, introducing you to the multiple focus areas within public health (e.g., epidemiology, health behavior, health policy). Our students also gain hands-on experience working with community partners to improve the health of populations. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the BS in Public Health degree is designed to prepare students to:

• Identify key health challenges facing a community, based on evaluation and synthesis of public health information.
• Recognize the importance of evidence-based strategies to address public health challenges facing a community.
• Advocate for improved health in the community, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

The UAB Department of Chemistry provides students with the education and practical experience they need to participate in new scientific frontiers. From our unique peer learning and teaching program to our world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities, UAB Chemistry advances the boundaries of chemical scholarship and discoveries.

Chemistry connects the basic sciences with all of the applied sciences, including medicine and engineering. The foundations of the world’s economy in the next generation, including advanced materials, fuels, energy, nanomaterials, medicines, sensors, biotechnology, and genomics, will all have chemistry at their core. As a result, a degree in chemistry opens the door to a wide variety of careers, such as medicine, pharmacy, health professions, forensics, and research. Regardless of what you want to do, UAB Chemistry will help you get there.

You have an interest in biomedical health sciences, but you want to leave your options open for your future. With this degree, you will have an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills that can help you launch a career in research science, scientific policy, science communication, education, or biomedical sales—or to gain more experience in preparation for professional schools.

You have plenty of choices in the program. Choose the thesis or non-thesis options, which require different amounts of laboratory and research training. Take elective courses to explore different biomedical science disciplines. Add a concentration designation to your transcript. You can even enroll in professional development courses in teaching, writing, scientific communication, and other topics. No matter what you choose, you can benefit from a core curriculum that includes courses in Molecular and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, General Human Physiology, Critical Thinking and Scientific Integrity, and Biostatistics.

Materials engineering is a highly diverse field with applications connected to virtually all scientific disciplines. Therefore, the Master of Science program at UAB is a viable option for students whose background includes a baccalaureate degree from other engineering fields or from any number of physical science disciplines.

Prospective students should demonstrate competence in fields of study that emphasize structure, processing, performance, and properties of materials.

There are three paths to an MSMtE:

• Plan I (Thesis Option): Includes 24 semester hours of course work and nine semester hours of thesis research.
• Plan II (Non-thesis Option): Includes 30 semester hours, plus comprehensive exams covering all course work or an on-site research topic.
• Plan III (Non-thesis, Technology/Engineering Management Emphasis): Includes 30 semester hours, plus comprehensive exams covering all course work or an on-site research topic. The latter option requires a publication-quality manuscript and oral presentation.

Finance
In finance, we'll teach you how to address an age-old problem: How do you make more money and grow your business? With your BS, we'll train you to add value to all sorts of businesses, including multinational banks, investment firms, and other companies in every industry.

But before you can build that wealth, you need the educational foundation required to fuel your success. That's why our program begins with an exploration of financial planning, investing, valuation, risk management and more. After your core courses, we'll help you choose a track that best fits your career goals. Not to mention, our award-winning, student-managed investment fund, the UAB Green and Gold Fund, will give you real-world experience. Best of all, everything's available both on campus and online.

If you're interested in careers in research science, scientific policy, science communication, science education, biomedical sales, and more, the Master of Science in Multidisciplinary Biomedical Science (MBS) might be for you. This program is intended for domestic and international students that have some undergraduate STEM field training and wish to increase their knowledge of biomedical sciences.

Have you ever wondered how you can harness your reading, writing, and language skills into a lucrative career? With an English degree from UAB, you can learn how powerful expression and communication can be in the worlds of media, law, medicine, and many more.

In fact, practically every job you can imagine depends on communication. That's why our program is so diverse. You can choose to learn the science behind the English language, study the greatest authors of all time, hone your creative writing skills, or prepare to write in a professional setting. You'll also have the opportunity to write for a student publication, complete a capstone project, work as an intern, or research for a thesis in the English honors program.
