Students in the Animal Science option at Montana State investigate the basic biological sciences of major livestock and rangeland in depth, as well as animal breeding, reproductive physiology, nutrition and livestock production. The option is designed for highly motivated students who have a strong interest in graduate training or professional school; graduates have gone onto veterinary school, medical school and graduate studies in the field.

In the Criminology program at Montana State, students combine a strong foundation in sociology with a specific focus on law, the legal system, the social structure of criminal behavior and society’s efforts to understand and control crime. Criminology students are able to delve into coursework on subjects such as social difference and stratification, criminal law and procedure, the sociology of deviance, corporate crime, inequality and more.

In the Electrical Engineering department at Montana State, graduate students are granted access to innovative research labs and centers that allow candidates to explore cutting-edge issues in the field. Associated research entities include the Spectrum Lab, the Montana Nanotechnology Facility (MONT) and the Optical Technology Center (OpTeC), among others. Sustainable Livestock Production students learn about the science of animal production within the context of sustainability, from the methods that impact the production, process and preservation of meat to the role of strategic grazing in landscape management, among other subjects.

In the graduate program for Plant Pathology at Montana State, candidates investigate major problems in plant pathology within MSU’s state of the art agricultural facilities. Sample research projects include, but are not limited to, soil-borne diseases in cereals, the genetic root of disease resistance in field crops, cereal leaf spots, viral diseases inherent in cereals and potatoes, bacterial diseases in plants, and the biochemistry and molecular genetics of general plant diseases. Not only does this research apply to making a healthier and more robust food supply, but the research also seeks to develop new technology to manage crop pests.

In the Environmental Biology program at Montana State, students learn more about the diversity of organisms – from microorganisms to large mammals – and their interconnected relationships in various complex environments. Environmental Biology students engage in cross-training on various subjects in biology and microbiology in order to gain a better understanding of those interrelated relationships on both a physical and chemical level in the environment.

Students in the Agribusiness Management program at Montana State learn how to apply economic and business principles to the organization, operation and management of agricultural enterprises. Agribusiness Management students study the production, processing, marketing and distribution of agricultural products, as well as the accounting, finance and management skills core to running a successful business in the agricultural sector. Upon graduation, students are prepared to make the best decisions regarding production, crop and animal management and business strategy for agribusiness firms.

Candidates in the Native American Studies graduate program at Montana State are able to study a diverse array of interdisciplinary subjects surrounding indigenous history and issues, as well as contribute to MSU's vibrant Native American community. Students focus on subjects such as history, cultural theory and methodology, anthropology, Native food systems, federal Indian law and policy, gender studies, literature and art, film studies, tribal government, higher education, geography and Native sciences and land resources and environmental studies. At the conclusion of their program, candidates pursue either a professional project or a thesis depending on their professional goals.

In the Organismal Biology program at Montana State, students enter a rigorous program of study will the goal of understanding plant or animal biology from the inner-most workings of internal biological systems to those organisms’ interaction with their immediate ecosystem on a communal level. With the option to tailor their plan of study to their personal interests, Organismal Biology students are able to specialize their degrees based on career interests in either the job market or advanced education.
