Candidates in the graduate History program at Montana State contribute to historical research and scholarship in four concentrated areas: environmental history; the history of science, technology, medicine and society; the history of the American West; and public history. Candidates investigate research interests through diverse opportunities that include seminar discussions, collaborating with their graduate committee, classroom instruction, teaching assistantships and internships. At the conclusion of the degree, master’s students are expected to submit a thesis or professional research paper, while doctoral candidates are expected to submit a dissertation on a topic of their choice.

Students in the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program at Montana State immerse themselves in the fundamentals of computing while exploring fields such as artificial intelligence, multimedia and computational biology. Computer Science B.S. students have two tracks to choose from: the Professional Option, which allows students to delve more deeply into computer science and related technical areas, and the Interdisciplinary Option, which allows students to intersect their technological interests with other fields that range from Entrepreneurship to Japanese Studies.

Candidates in the Native American Studies graduate program at Montana State are able to study a diverse array of interdisciplinary subjects surrounding indigenous history and issues, as well as contribute to MSU's vibrant Native American community. Students focus on subjects such as history, cultural theory and methodology, anthropology, Native food systems, federal Indian law and policy, gender studies, literature and art, film studies, tribal government, higher education, geography and Native sciences and land resources and environmental studies. At the conclusion of their program, candidates pursue either a professional project or a thesis depending on their professional goals.

In the Electrical Engineering department at Montana State, graduate students are granted access to innovative research labs and centers that allow candidates to explore cutting-edge issues in the field. Associated research entities include the Spectrum Lab, the Montana Nanotechnology Facility (MONT) and the Optical Technology Center (OpTeC), among others. While candidates are further honing their skills with vital hands-on learning opportunities, they are also supported by award-winning faculty who are recognized leaders in their area of expertise.

In the Rangeland Ecology & Management program at Montana State, students are given a background in ecological principles as preparation for managing rangelands in the western United States. Along with coursework in resource inventory, watersheds, rangeland restoration and vegetation ecology, Rangeland Ecology & Management students are able to select courses which focus on either production agriculture or other natural resource areas.

The Department of English at Montana State University offers a rich and challenging program taught by award-winning scholars devoted to student success. Literature from various eras and cultures, especially British and American literatures, both canonical and emergent, shape the undergraduate English experience. Students will develop critical thinking, reading and writing skills that will prepare them for a number of careers or graduate fields.

In the graduate Animal & Range Sciences program at Montana State, candidates pursue research projects across a wide variety of subject matter, including livestock nutrition, livestock breeding and genetics, meat science, production systems, rangeland management, land-use planning, wildlife management and more. Graduate candidates choose between Animal or Range Sciences for their research emphasis, with projects that open up opportunities to conduct research with cooperating ranches, the USDA, federal and state agencies, and research laboratories across the Mountain West.

In the Food Enterprise option students practice strategies on entrepreneurship and innovation in food growth and development. This means discovering how to make new and exciting products with specialty crops native to Montana, learning about sustainability and rural hospitality through hands-on opportunities, either with internships or working at the Towne’s Harvest Garden located on campus. Graduates of the Food Enterprise program enter careers in food processing, food distribution or opening their own business in the food sector.

Integrated Lens-Based Media students at Montana State are immersed in an intensive, interdisciplinary course of study in both cinematic and photographic media. The Integrated Lens-Based Media program combines aspects of the Film and Photography programs, allowing students to explore aspects of filmmaking and photography in their art practice. Under the mentorship of two advisors – one filmmaker and one photographer – students in the program design a customized curriculum that culminates in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary capstone project that will prepare them to pursue a career as a professional artist or further study in graduate school.

The Department of Ecology offers a Master of Science degree and a doctorate in Biological Sciences. These programs cover a broad array of ecological topics and are suited for students primarily interested in research careers with federal or state agencies or academic careers in ecology.
