At Montana State, students in the Snow Science track have one of the best laboratories in the nation in which to study: the Rocky Mountains. Alongside some of the most preeminent scientists in the field, students gain a foundational understanding of the distribution, mechanics and composition of snow before further defining their study before graduation. Snow scientists find careers in snow safety and consulting in land use planning, transportation and avalanche protection, as well as post-graduate study to further prepare for positions in the field.

Housed within MSU’s Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry as an option within the Chemistry major, the teaching option provides a thorough background in the basic fields of chemistry and an acquaintance with the more relevant aspects of chemistry in society, which are essential to any practicing chemistry teacher.

In the graduate program for Plant Sciences at Montana State, candidates pursue research projects within state-of-the-art laboratories on subjects such as plant breeding and genetics, plant pathology, mycology, biotechnology, plant physiology and systematics, molecular evolution and biochemistry. Candidates conduct these projects in labs such as the Plant BioScience Facility or the Plant Growth Center, with over 29 glasshouse rooms and 8,300 square feet of bench space. In this interdisciplinary program in the departments of Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Chemistry and Biochemistry, Optics and Photonics graduate students at Montana State learn to harness the power of light to prepare for in-demand jobs or research careers in laser engineering, remote sensing and more. Montana State's Optical Technology Center, founded in 1995, has supported a culture of interdisciplinary research and has a long history of partnership with Bozeman's thriving optics and photonics industry.

Microbiology is a diverse discipline that has become an umbrella term for a variety of studies, including bacteriology, mycology, protozoology, phycology, parasitology and virology. In the Environmental Health program at Montana State, students are able to delve into the study of medical microbiology, virology, immunology and molecular biology in order to prepare for careers in the public health sector.

Candidates in the Native American Studies graduate program at Montana State are able to study a diverse array of interdisciplinary subjects surrounding indigenous history and issues, as well as contribute to MSU's vibrant Native American community. Students focus on subjects such as history, cultural theory and methodology, anthropology, Native food systems, federal Indian law and policy, gender studies, literature and art, film studies, tribal government, higher education, geography and Native sciences and land resources and environmental studies. At the conclusion of their program, candidates pursue either a professional project or a thesis depending on their professional goals.

The History program at Montana State allows students to specialize in the study of the American West, U.S. history, environmental history and the history of science and technology. History students participate in original research projects and student-centered learning activities, as well as internships at historical societies, museums and Yellowstone National Park, among other organizations.

As part of the Plant Biotechnology program at Montana State, students gain a strong foundation in the field by completing coursework through the first two years of the program in diverse subjects including chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, genetics and other allied sciences. Once the general biotechnology coursework is complete, Plant Biotechnology students then study and address the various problems facing the various issues facing plant production and plant-related agricultural systems.

The Technology Education program in the Department of Education at Montana State is a multi-disciplinary program of study designed to develop technological literacy through the study of past, present and future technological systems and their impacts on society. The Industry Option provides students the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of areas plus the flexibility to choose courses that allow them to further develop in-depth skills for their chosen career path. Students in the industrial technology option typically intern in business and industry areas related to their career interests.
