Focused on writing, teaching, and literary studies, the graduate English program at Montana State covers a range of literary topics from different countries of origin and time periods, but always centering on a focus on the vital role of space. Such inquiry may consider the iconic terrain of the American West, the battlefields of Europe, and other settings both rural and urban. Students develop close mentoring relationships with faculty members who have expertise in fields such as writing studies, education and pedagogy, British literature and the literature of the American West.

Students within the Agricultural Education – Communications, Leadership and Extension program at Montana State develop professional skills to advocate for the agriculture industry and educate diverse audiences on emerging agricultural issues. Depending on the students’ interests, they can focus on agricultural communications, agricultural extension, or agricultural leadership as part of their course of studies. Regardless of their track, every Agricultural Education – Communications, Leadership and Extension student completes a Leadership Fellows certificate, as well as an internship with an agricultural agency, Extension office or agricultural organization.

In the Food Enterprise option students practice strategies on entrepreneurship and innovation in food growth and development. This means discovering how to make new and exciting products with specialty crops native to Montana, learning about sustainability and rural hospitality through hands-on opportunities, either with internships or working at the Towne’s Harvest Garden located on campus. Graduates of the Food Enterprise program enter careers in food processing, food distribution or opening their own business in the food sector.

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Montana State trains students in the core skills of engineering fundamentals, manufacturing applications, mechanical design and thermal sciences in hands-on activities both inside and outside of the laboratory. Upon graduation, Mechanical Engineering Technology students are equipped to enter jobs in which they produce computer models, design drawings, operate manufacturing equipment, inspect manufacturing floor, analyzes production problems or assists in making a brand new product come to life.

As part of the Plant Biotechnology program at Montana State, students gain a strong foundation in the field by completing coursework through the first two years of the program in diverse subjects including chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, genetics and other allied sciences. Once the general biotechnology coursework is complete, Plant Biotechnology students then study and address the various problems facing the various issues facing plant production and plant-related agricultural systems.

The Computer Engineering program at Montana State is an interdisciplinary major that incorporates substantial coursework from both Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science. Students learn common skills in science, mathematics, electronics and circuits as well as additional computer science and computer architecture courses to round out their understanding of the field. With hands-on experiences in labs across campus and a mandatory capstone project to display their skills in their senior year, Computer Engineering graduates have a great reputation for confidence and effectiveness in engineering design, analysis and troubleshooting.

In the Geographic Information Science/Planning program at Montana State, students use a mix of technical skills and academic training to prepare to enter the fields of planning and resource management. Students will be prepared as map makers, spatial analysts and planners as they work in an active hands-on environment.

In the Science, the Environment, Technology & Society (SETS) program at Montana State, students study history through the lens of science, technology and the environment within broader cultural contexts, such as intellectual and social history, environmental history, religious studies or philosophy. SETS students choose one of several specialties as a focus for their coursework, including Philosophy of Science, History of Science and Technology, Science and Technology Policy or Environmental History.

In the Fish & Wildlife Ecology & Management program at Montana State, students are able conduct research on the ecology and management of diverse mammal, bird and fish species in one of the most diverse ecosystems in North America. Both Yellowstone National Park and the Gallatin Valley serve as outdoor laboratories for the program, with opportunities to conduct active professional research with programs such as the National Resources Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University, the Association for Conservation of the Tropics, Cape RADD and more.

Montana State’s American Studies undergraduate program provides world-class training for students who are seeking a broad understanding of American culture. Students can choose to study fields such as American Arts, American History and American Literature. The program is ideal for students who want to pursue a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum that will explore the experiences and values of the people of the United States embodied in their history, literature, art and other forums of cultural expression.
