Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The Department of Music offers a Master of Music degree, with a variety of emphasis areas, including performance, conducting, and music education. Within the area of performance, students may select an instrumental (string, wind, brass, percussion, or keyboard) emphasis. This degree is designed to prepare individuals for professional advancement or for entry into further study at the doctoral level.

Awards for full-time graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Recipients of these positions will take active leadership roles in the department's ensembles, teaching and accompanying private lessons, and/or serving as an assistant to the ensemble director.

Master of Science in Technology

The Master of Science in Technology is the most flexible of the College of Technology graduate programs because it can be tailored to address a wide range of career goals, based on emphasis selected. The Master of Science in Technology program provides advanced instruction in technical, scientific, managerial and supervisory areas for those working in technical and management positions in business and industry. The online degree program is designed for the full-time, workplace-bound individual.

The Master of Science in Technology program offers a 15-hour core of course work in research, global issues, leadership, quality systems and management, and statistics-based analysis; and one credit hour of assessment. Remaining nine hours of emphasis–related courses and nine hours of enrichment electives complete the 33-hour program to address candidates’ specific career goals. Candidates in program typically have undergraduate degree related to a specific technology area. Depending upon academic background and emphasis selected, candidates may be required to take pre-requisites or foundation course work.

We have undergraduate programs covering the range of modern biology including: pre-health (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-vet, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant), medical technology, cell and molecular biology, wildlife biology, fisheries and aquatic sciences, botany, ecology, and secondary education.

There are almost 400 students in the undergraduate program and about 20 in the graduate division. The Department of Biology has 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of interests. The faculty are dedicated and committed to Pittsburg State University and the department, but most importantly, to students. Most faculty are actively engaged in research activities, national professional organizations, and professional service.

Ecology and Field Biology - Emphasis
The Ecology and Field Biology emphasis covers a wide range of topics, including physiological ecology, natural selection, population biology, ecosystem dynamics, and more. Combing both lab and field activities, this program gives students a hands-on, interactive look at the fascinating relationships between organisms.

This track is recommended for students pursuing a career and/or graduate study in ecology, evolutionary biology, environmental science, zoology, wildlife biology, conservation, and more.

The Department of Psychology and Counseling has placed its graduates in schools, businesses, agencies and hospitals throughout the region, as well as provided teachers for two and four year colleges. The department enjoys a strong relationship with area mental health agencies, with many private and governmental establishments acting as training sites for students, and using department faculty and advanced graduate students as consultants. PSU is the only school within a 100 mile radius that provides graduate training in counseling, psychology and school psychology. Additionally, no other university in Kansas has an integrated psychology and counseling department, allowing the department to offer comprehensive, in-depth programs in each area and providing students with the opportunity to experience the best in both disciplines.

Psychology, Human Resource Development - Emphasis
As a part of the Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology, the Human Resource Development (HRD) concentration area helps prepare students for graduate training in HRD and for careers in business and industry as human resource planners, personnel directors, or employee selection specialists. Individuals trained to assist individuals in the workplace become the most effective and motivated workers who have their skills, abilities, and knowledge suitably utilized and recognized.

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology was designed for students who want to pursue a career in a psychology-related field immediately after graduation. Historically, most careers in psychology and counseling require graduate training. However, there are a number of careers that do not.

Wildlife Ecology and Conservation - Emphasis
Environmental sustainability and conservation has never been more important than it is today. Students in the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation emphasis program will develop knowledge and skills to help protect Earth and all of its inhabitants.

Combining biology, chemistry, ecology, and other natural sciences, this emphasis features a focus on the conservation, protection, and management of wildlife and their natural habitats. Students will benefit from an integrated curriculum that allows them to learn about wildlife from all angles.

The Department of English and Modern Languages offers baccalaureate degrees and a master’s degree program. Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs are offered in English and in Modern Languages. A Bachelor of Science in Education and a master’s program are also offered in English. The department offers minors in English, English Teaching, Creative Writing, French, Professional Writing, and Spanish.

The Department of Art at Pittsburg State University provides students who have an interest in art with a strong foundation in creative critical thinking and design. We offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with four emphasis areas: 2D Studio Art, 3D Studio Art, Illustration and Visual Storytelling, and Art Education. The BFA degree prepares students for a multitude of professional careers in studio, applied arts, and art education, and is also considered fundamental preparation for graduate degrees in the studio arts and art history.

The Department of Art faculty members are all active exhibiting artists and/or research scholars in their own respective art fields. Faculty provide students with insight and guidance as they prepare for their own careers. The student to faculty ratio in the Department of Art is approximately 15 to 1.

All art majors take a series of introductory art courses in a wide range of media, as well as art history courses, and upper level courses in their emphasis area. Additionally, students pursuing a studio art emphasis take a series of professional practice courses that introduce them to the business aspects of being working artists and developing creative careers. Those pursuing the art education emphasis receive a comprehensive art education curriculum. Students also have opportunities to participate in internships in the areas of museum studies and gallery practice or studio and creative industry.
