Anthropology is the study of all humans, past and present. Per the American Anthropological Association, anthropology helps one to “understand the full sweep and complexity of cultures across all of human history” as it draws from social, biological, and physical sciences, as well as the humanities. The study of anthropology provides you with skills that are useful for living and working in today’s world and interacting with people from many different cultural backgrounds. Anthropology graduates are critical thinkers and effective communicators who are able to be productive members of working groups by generating relevant information and making informed decisions. Anthropological training concentrates on three broadly transferable skill areas — understanding human diversity, building research skills for collecting and making sense of information, and communicating effectively.

The complement of knowledge gained through the study of anthropology is applicable to a wide array of careers. Government, academia, business, and community service organizations are four of the job sectors that many undergraduate anthropology students pursue. Other graduates of anthropology programs choose to seek further study and advance to graduate school.

The Public Health and Microbiology concentration includes studies in:

• Microbial pathogenesis
• Principles of public health
• Epidemiology
• Molecular genetics
• Virology
• Environmental and industrial microbial processes.

This concentration prepares students for technical work or graduate school in microbial disease systems using polymerase chain reaction, other molecular diagnostic tools, as well as environmental and industrial applications of microbial systems.

Career advancement in an increasingly diverse global society requires the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people from different cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, and social backgrounds. A sociology degree serves as an excellent springboard for a variety of careers in diverse fields in business, industry, and organizations. Sociologists study social life, social change, diverse communities and their interactions, and they use scientific methods to find empirical answers to complex social questions. Studying sociology can help foster your creativity, innovation, critical thinking, analytic problem solving, and communication skills.

The importance of marketing is amplified by the fact that marketing activities consti­tute one-half of the total cost of an average product and that a marketing orientation is linked with the purpose of any business or organization; that is, serving customer needs. The program of study in marketing provides the knowledge students need to successfully create customer value in a dynamic environment. Creating customer value requires a balance between thinking logically and creatively, and the marketing special­ization challenges students to do both. Students also have opportunities to develop interpersonal and communication capabilities, and valuable skills in demand by local, national and international employers.

A teacher’s influence can last a lifetime. Positively shape the lives of young people with a career in the classroom. Students in grades 6 through 12 need committed educators dedicated to enriching their lives and helping them master the secondary school curriculum. You’ll get a dual degree: one in your content area of expertise — English, math, history/social science, or science— and one in Secondary Education. An internship will give you practical experience in the classroom.

A Secondary Education General Science degree prepares students to teach general science courses in the areas of chemistry, earth and space science, physics, and biology at the middle, junior, and senior high school levels (grades 6-12).

The AUM Theatre program’s strength is preparing emerging artists for careers in production as performers, directors, designers, technicians, stage managers and more.

You’ll learn through faculty coaching and practical experience. At AUM, as you learn about all aspects of production, you’ll also cultivate valuable traits that will serve you well– communication, leadership, confidence, self-discipline, work ethic, dedication, creativity, and teamwork.

Students in the Theatre option of the Communication and Theatre department put classroom training and skills to work in every aspect of the department’s mainstage theatre lab productions. This award-winning program participates in and provides leadership for state, regional and national theatre organizations such as the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Southeastern Theatre Conference, United States Institute of Theatre Technology and the Alabama Conference of Theatre.

The global economy continues to rapidly expand, and therefore the demand for international business education is higher than ever. Educated individuals who have an understanding of the global diversity existing in the corporate world today are valuable participants in global business ventures. Today companies need individuals who can understand how to work within a setting surrounded by different languages, and who can take into account the broader perspective of trade regulations of different governing bodies. The BSBA integrated curriculum helps students to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the environmental aspects of international business in a variety of contexts, including socio-cultural, political, financial, and economic.
• Critically synthesizing, analyzing, and interpreting data to use in effective decision-making.
• Gain an understanding of the international dimensions of business functions, including marketing, finance, management, and operations.
• Critically analyze and communicate complex business issues in multinational markets.

If you’re looking for exposure to the many creative possibilities in the visual arts while you get a meaningful general education in liberal arts, the Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Visual Art may be right for you. The Visual Art program teaches students the traditional principles, methods, techniques and historical background of art necessary for building specialized roles in the art field. The Visual Art concentration emphasizes personal expression and specialization for preparation to become a practicing artist or candidate for graduate programs.

To meet the needs of today’s organizations — and ensure that its business school students graduate with a set of skills that will set them apart in the marketplace — the College of Business designed its Entrepreneurship program to challenge students in a new way and inspire creative thinking. Our faculty – many of them successful practitioners in their field – deliver hands-on instruction in small-class environments.

The BSBA in Entrepreneurships prepare graduates to:

• Develop an effective, innovative business plan
• Identify and acquire the resources needed for the creation and implementation of a new venture, including financial, human, and managerial resources
• Understand risk and its effect on new ventures and analyze financial data to support business decisions and assessment of business strategies
• Identify, analyze, and understand potential market behaviors that would enhance value creation and profitability
• Lead the entrepreneurial process, from idea generation to the commercialization and implementation of the new business venture

Environmental scientists use their knowledge of earth’s systems to protect the environment and human health. They do this by cleaning up contaminated areas, making policy recommendations, or working with industry to reduce pollution and waste. Soil and plant scientists, and ecologists often work in remediation efforts, for a sanitation company, in manufacturing, at a university, or for a not-for-profit organization. Other environmental scientists are engaged in environmental policy, planning, and management for local governments, performing research-intensive work. Some professionals in this field have careers at the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Park Service, the United States Geological Survey and other agencies.

Environmental scientists are problem solvers. They research environmental and health problems to determine their causes and come up with solutions. They also use what they learn to make recommendations and develop strategies for managing environmental problems. From wading through swamps studying the impact of encroaching human populations on endangered species, to monitoring pollution levels in lakes and rivers, graduates of AUM’s Environmental Science program get the training needed for a fascinating and rewarding career.
