Industrial engineers are engineers with a business flair who enjoy working with people. They apply engineering design to create and improve systems that deliver products or services. They strive to improve the productivity of their organizations and respond to changing customer needs and wants quickly and constantly. For instance, an industrial engineer may be involved in designing a new production plant for a car manufacturer (a product) or in designing an effective emergency room for a hospital (a service). In designing these systems, an industrial engineer integrates equipment, materials, energy, information, and people together to meet business objectives while ensuring product/service quality and reliability, the safety and satisfaction of customers and employees, and the effective and productive use of resources.

The versatility of industrial engineers allows them to engage in activities that are useful to a variety of businesses, governments, and nonprofits. For example, industrial engineers engage in supply chain management to help businesses minimize inventory costs, conduct quality assurance activities to help businesses keep their customer bases satisfied, and work in the growing field of project management as industries across the economy seek to control costs and maximize efficiencies. With skills that can be applied to almost any industry, industrial engineers can work in almost any field and at any type of organization/company.

In this program, you’ll study the physiology, genetics, ecology, and diversity of microorganisms—like viruses, bacteria, and fungi—and how they impact everything from agriculture to public health and immunology.

Civil engineers work on the design, construction, and maintenance of the infrastructure systems we use every day and/or in surveying and coastal subsidence projects. Sub-disciplines include: mechanics of materials (steel, concrete, timber, pavement etc.), structures (bridges, buildings, etc.), water resources (rivers, levees, etc.), transportation (traffic systems, highways, and roadways), geotechnical (soils, foundations, and coastal subsidence), and geodesy (surveying). Graduates may work for structural design firms or the petrochemical industry, but often work for government entities such as the Department of Transportation or U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

In this program, you can expect to gain a wide-ranging view of world issues while focusing on a particular geographic region or areas such as global diplomacy. In international studies, you will also have opportunities to participate in study abroad programs and develop in-depth knowledge of the languages and cultures of your chosen area.

• Global Cultures: The concentration in global cultures includes arts, folklore, religious practice, and literature from cultures around the world, with an emphasis on the sharing of cultures across regions through migration, colonialism, and diasporas. The concentration draws heavily on anthropology and literary analysis to provide a vocabulary for the study of culture. It also examines how identities are created, maintained, or changed in a global world.

Economics is the study of how people choose to use resources. These can include the time and talent people have available; the land, buildings, equipment, and other tools on hand; and the knowledge of how to combine them to create useful products and services. Economics will provide you with analytical skills and a breadth of economic understanding that prepares you for a career in business or government or for further study in economics, law, or public policy.

Empirical Economic Analysis: Learn how to define and analyze economic problems using algebraic and statistical methods, and to identify the benefits and costs of a global economy.

Learn how raw products move from farm to table, including all of the functions of agricultural business. This major will allow you to focus on management, marketing, finance, and economics, while addressing questions and concerns involving the economics and sociology of agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities.

Rural Development: This curriculum prepares you for a career in which you can assist local governments in nonprofit sectors to improve the livelihood and sustainability of rural areas.

Kinesiology is the study of human movement and the practice of helping people understand how their body performs, how to maintain proper physical health, and how to maximize their body's potential.

• Environment and Development: The concentration in environment and development focuses on the interplay between economic development and natural resources. The goal of this concentration is to help students understand the difficulties and opportunities in the area of sustainable development. Economic activity has environmental effects at all scales from local pollution and resource depletion such as deforestation, to regional impacts from overfishing or excessive use of water resources, and on to global concerns such as climate change.
