Learn about the properties and composition of matter and the interactions and alterations of substances. Chemistry is at the core of most scientific disciplines, including the study of polymers, biotechnology, pollution control, and energy. There are nine available concentrations, which will allow you to narrow your focus to the career track that works best for you or help you prepare for graduate study. 

Materials
Make the connection between chemistry and a wide range of practical materials used to fabricate electronic, optical, and other devices.

The Bachelor of Social Work program will prepare you to engage in a practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Graduates are qualified for entry-level positions in government, nonprofit, and for-profit social service agencies in fields such as schools, corrections, child welfare, hospitals, and the military to name a few. The LSU BSW program is currently in candidacy with the Council on Social Work Education. Once the program is fully accredited, students with a BSW may be eligible to enter a one-year Advanced Standing MSW program.

Civil engineers work on the design, construction, and maintenance of the infrastructure systems we use every day and/or in surveying and coastal subsidence projects. Sub-disciplines include: mechanics of materials (steel, concrete, timber, pavement etc.), structures (bridges, buildings, etc.), water resources (rivers, levees, etc.), transportation (traffic systems, highways, and roadways), geotechnical (soils, foundations, and coastal subsidence), and geodesy (surveying). Graduates may work for structural design firms or the petrochemical industry, but often work for government entities such as the Department of Transportation or U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

Philosophy will allow you to stretch your mind and imagination by examining some of the most difficult problems of human existence. By building analytical skills related to meaning, value, and argumentation, you will be equipped for a surprising range of opportunities in fields such as linguistics, computer science, medical ethics, or law.

You are interested in the role that communication plays in image building, and want to help shape  the message.

Public Relations
In a day of work, public relations professionals can move from writing a news release to planning a product launch to countering a negative story in the media. Learn how to implement strategic communication tactics to build and maintain relationships between individuals, organizations, or companies and their various publics.

You will feel right at home as a geography major. Take advantage of the special emphases in Latin American and East Asian geography. Get heavily involved in hands-on research projects and the student-run Geography and Anthropology Society.

In this program, you’ll study the physiology, genetics, ecology, and diversity of microorganisms—like viruses, bacteria, and fungi—and how they impact everything from agriculture to public health and immunology.

Study ways to improve crops and discover new crossbreeds of plants, and learn the latest approaches to the cultivation, marketing, and processing of ornamental plants, fruits, and vegetables. Topics include soil science and conservation, ornamentals and grasses, urban landscape management, sustainable horticulture, and much more.

Soil Science: Learn how soils are used as a natural resource to support agronomic production and environmental quality.

The major has a low teacher-student ratio, so small classes are guaranteed. Graduates are prepared for employment and post-graduate study. Those choosing post-graduate study are ready for pre-med, pre-law, pre-dental, pre-vet, pre-Masters of Public Health, and pre-disciplinary graduate study. Those entering the workforce have many career options. If you have a demonstrated strength in science, math, complex problem-solving, and enjoy field work, then this is the degree path for you.

Coastal Meteorology: Ideal for anyone interested in pursuing a career in meteorology, especially regarding coastal impacts and weather disturbances.

Environmental engineering at LSU will provide you with a unique learning opportunity. Due to Louisiana’s economic activity from the Mississippi River, our unique coast and soil, the array of industry present here, and environmental challenges, such as hurricanes and storm surges, you will have a canvas like no other to research and practice. Environmental engineers are not only concerned with local and regional issues, but work on problems of global significance, including the world water and sanitation crisis, the impacts of population growth, and climate change. They are responsible for municipal water supply and wastewater treatment in urban and rural areas. Environmental engineers also work to reduce risk from hazardous materials in the environment by designing safe disposal and remediation methods for contaminated soil, sediment, and water. Specialization tracks include sustainability, coastal engineering, and a “flex” track, which allows students to tailor their focus to meet individual career goals. Graduates pursue careers in governmental organizations, nonprofits, and industry, or they may serve as external consultants for any of these entities.
