Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

This curriculum is diverse with opportunities to study forest management of hardwood and pine forests, wetlands, wildlife, conservation biology, fisheries, aquaculture, habitat management, or prepare for a career as a wildlife-oriented veterinarian. Curricula emphasizes field instruction. Unique facilities available through this curriculum include the School of Renewable Natural Resources’ Lee Memorial Forest, an actively managed forest, which has accommodations and teaching facilities so that you can get hands-on experience in the field.
Ecological Restoration: Use the principles of forestry and natural resource management to conserve and restore impacted landscapes.

Undergraduate Extended Accelerator Pathway (3-Term) - Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering
Environmental engineering at LSU will provide you with a unique learning opportunity. Due to Louisiana’s economic activity from the Mississippi River, our unique coast and soil, the array of industry present here, and environmental challenges, such as hurricanes and storm surges, you will have a canvas like no other to research and practice. Environmental engineers are not only concerned with local and regional issues, but work on problems of global significance, including the world water and sanitation crisis, the impacts of population growth, and climate change. They are responsible for municipal water supply and wastewater treatment in urban and rural areas. Environmental engineers also work to reduce risk from hazardous materials in the environment by designing safe disposal and remediation methods for contaminated soil, sediment, and water. Specialization tracks include sustainability, coastal engineering, and a “flex” track, which allows students to tailor their focus to meet individual career goals. Graduates pursue careers in governmental organizations, nonprofits, and industry, or they may serve as external consultants for any of these entities.
