The Department of Mathematics offers a B.A. in mathematics for students who wish a broad education in a mathematical field in preparation for careers in teaching or other areas.

The B.A. degree allows greater compatibility with other areas of study, and prepares students for careers such as education through a broad knowledge of different subfields of both theoretical and applied mathematics.

The M.S. in exercise science prepares students for careers in fitness and allied health and research. The degree also prepares students for advanced study at the doctoral (Ph.D.) level.

A Bachelor of Science in Geology allows students to study the composition and structure of the earth, earth history (environments and life), natural hazards (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanism, etc), mineral and energy extraction, surface and groundwater, ocean processes, and more.

Geologists study the earth – its history, its composition and processes, as well as potential hazards such as earthquakes, volcanos, landslides and climate change.

With a geology degree, you can find a job in energy, mining, environmental consulting, government research and regulation. And, you’ll likely find yourself spending part of your workday outdoors – in swamps, mountains, forests, desert plains and out at sea.

Using mathematical and statistical models, economists consider how resources such as labor, land, money, and technology are distributed.  Economics majors gain a broad understanding of the field of economics as well as skills in statistics, mathematics, organization, research methodology, and verbal and written communication.

Economics provides a broad and systematic way of thinking about social, financial, and business problems. The B.A. in economics prepares a graduate for many positions in business and government. Some positions are economic analyst, statistician, and research assistant.

Ole Miss banking and finance majors receive experiences in regulatory and compliance issues, risk management, financial decision-making, lending, global banking, bank performance, non-bank competitors, financial mathematics, and legal related guidelines.

Curricula of the School of Business Administration are designed both for those who plan to operate their own businesses and for those who plan to occupy responsible positions in business organizations. Work in money and banking, business finance, and investments acquaints the student with the role and function of financial institutions and transactions in the economic system and provides the student with adequate undergraduate training for private or public employment.

History majors at the University of Mississippi take a range of courses across American and European history as well as history of other regions. They take at least one advanced research course where they utilize primary resources to address questions of historical importance.

The M.A. degree provides students with an intensive study of the different fields, theories, and research methods in contemporary political science. The degree prepares students for doctoral study in political science, and for careers in education, government, or policy analysis. Two options are offered: One, which requires a written thesis, is for students primarily interested in political science research; the other, which replaces the thesis with a written comprehensive examination, is for students who are more concerned with the practical application of their political science expertise.

Forensic chemistry students at the University of Mississippi focus on analytical chemistry and biochemistry/molecular biology, with a capstone internship experience and participation in research.

The B.S. program in forensic chemistry is intended for students who seek a career in a local, state, or federal crime laboratory. This program shares many elements in common with the department's B.A. program in biochemistry and therefore provides academic preparation for students who are interested in a career in medicine, dentistry, or other health-related professions.
