The Master of Music is an advanced professional degree designed to develop a particular area in music to a high level of specialization. The university offers the M.M. with the following emphases: 1) performance in woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments, piano, and voice; 2) music education; 3) choral conducting; 4) musicology; 5) music theory; 6) ethnomusicology; and 7) collaborative piano.

The General Engineering program at University of Mississippi is heavily rooted in mathematics, science, and core engineering coursework, but offers a breadth and flexibility not offered by other programs in order to enable students to tailor a program of study to suit their interests and career goals.

A general engineering background provides you with an understanding of the core math, scientific and technical principles needed for engineering. You’ll learn about problem-solving, as well as gain teamwork, leadership and communications skills.

You’ll explore the various engineering directions offered at Ole Miss in your first year in the general engineering program.

With a bachelor degree in engineering, you’ll be equipped for many engineering – and non-engineering – career paths. This could be as a project engineer, medical doctor, lawyer, military, business person and many other opportunities.

In general engineering, you will get:

• Broader horizon – you get the core engineering science principles plus the flexibility to widen your course selection outside of engineering.
• Tailored program – you can choose an emphasis in business, manufacturing, pre-med, and ROTC studies – or one designed around your personal goals.

The B.A. in chemistry is designed for students who wish to pursue a degree in the physical sciences with a broad liberal arts background. Some students use this degree program to prepare for admission to pharmacy school or as the basis for studies in environmental law. Students interested in teaching chemistry at the high-school level may use this degree to prepare for alternate route teacher certification by following a specified curriculum with a minor in either biological science, mathematics, or physics.

The B.S. in chemical engineering provides the student with a fundamental knowledge of chemical engineering science and prepares graduates for a variety of careers in industry and government, or for advanced study in engineering, business, or professional school.

With a chemical engineering degree, you will be ready to pursue careers in manufacturing, petrochemicals, oil and gas, biotechnology, the environmental field and more. Your degree can also pave the way to top graduate programs in medicine, business, law and advanced engineering fields.

You can choose the standard track, the pre-med track or one of the following emphases:

• Biotechnology – this includes the study and use of biological processes to make advancements in fields as diverse as drugs, agriculture and food.
• Environmental – this will give you the foundation to work in environmental areas, such as waste and pollution reduction.
• Manufacturing – you’ll learn the skills to improve processes and productivity in advanced manufacturing environments.
• Materials – you’ll delve into the world of advanced materials – such as polymers and nanomaterials (no hyphen in nanomaterials) – that can handle extreme conditions.

The rapidly rising demand for accountants has made this profession one of the fastest growing in the nation. Students with diverse backgrounds, abilities and interests all have opportunities in accounting.

Accounting is known as the language of business and provides an academic foundation that is highly valuable for public accounting, managerial accounting, financial management and investing, as well as business fields in general.

The primary function of the accountancy program is to provide professional education required to prepare students for careers as professional accountants in financial institutions, government, industry, nonprofit organizations, and public practice. Emphasis is placed upon both theoretical principles and concepts and practical applications to fulfill the need for reliable financial information. Professional courses provide students with the accounting education required to commence and continue to develop in a wide range of professional accounting careers.

Literature and literary studies are at the core of the humanities and at the center of debates concerning culture, politics, education, and language. The program of study in English not only enriches students' appreciation of literature and engages them in cultural debate but helps develop crucial skills in analytical thinking and clear, persuasive expression both in speech and in writing. An English degree is an ideal gateway for careers that emphasize communication and critical thinking including law, business, journalism, public service, and education.

The Department of Mathematics offers a B.A. in mathematics for students who wish a broad education in a mathematical field in preparation for careers in teaching or other areas. The B.A. degree allows greater compatibility with other areas of study, and prepares students for careers such as education through a broad knowledge of different subfields of both theoretical and applied mathematics.

The B.A. degree in physics is suggested for students wishing to teach physics in high school or to enter graduate or professional schools, such as medical school or law school. The department also offers a special B.A. curriculum for pre-medical students, which includes physics courses that are especially useful for medical students. It is recommended that students interested in teaching high school physics obtain a B.A. physics degree and a secondary education certification.

Study the theories, experimentation and engineering that form the basis for the design and use of computers

Computer scientists work in almost every industry because computing is the glue that holds much of contemporary science, technology, commerce and entertainment together.

With a computer science degree, you can pursue a wide spectrum of roles – you could develop software, applications or websites. You could design, maintain or protect computer systems. Or you could focus on data – how to store, organize and derive value from it.

You’ll be able to take advantage of:

• Degree choice – with the more specialized Bachelor of Science degree, you’ll take additional math, science and computing courses. With a Bachelor of Arts, you get the core computer science principles and the flexibility to take courses compatible with a liberal arts degree.
• New or enhanced courses – you’ll keep up with innovations in cybersecurity, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, graphics, game development, web and mobile app development and more. And you have the option to pursue a cyber security or data science emphasis.
• Community and competition – take part in our programming competitions, hackathons, esports activities and join our student chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery.

The Bachelor of Music curriculum prepares students to become professional musicians or vocalists, to teach music at the K-12 levels, or for graduate or professional school. Students select a concentration in instrumental, keyboard, or vocal training.

The B.M. in music is offered for students seeking a university education that includes preparation for careers in music teaching or performance. The B.M. degree is available in the following emphases: music performance and music education.

The B.M. in music with emphasis in music education prepares students for certification in the following fields: instrumental (band or orchestra; students may choose any woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instrument as the principal instrument); vocal/choral music; keyboard. Separate course requirements are given as three concentrations: instrumental, vocal, or keyboard as principal instrument.
