The Anthropology Department offers a general program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree and a Research Track/Intensive Major leading to a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Anthropology and a Medical Anthropology Minor. Anthropology is a social science concerned with the study of humans within a broad context that includes the social and physical development of our species. The diverse discipline is divided into four main areas.

• Cultural Anthropology is concerned with the comparative analysis of different cultures.
• Archaeology is the science that studies past people and societies through their artifacts.
• Linguistic Anthropology involves the study of all forms of human systems of communication and how these systems mediate humans’ experience and engagement with the world.
• Biological Anthropology includes the study of the physical nature and development of human beings, behavior and anatomy of nonhuman primates, and human variations.

Chemical engineers are leading new developments in medicine, advanced materials, energy, consumer products, manufacturing and environmental solutions. Students have the option to earn their master's degree in hospitality and tourism management on campus or via distance learning and at their own pace. Synchronous distance delivery using Adobe Connect provides remote students with an engaging, interactive classroom experience where they learn in real time with on-campus classmates and professors. Additional asynchronous course options give students the flexibility to complete courses online and at their convenience. 

Are you interested in learning about some of the most pressing social issues of the day, such as immigration, discrimination, economic and social inequality, demographic change, race and ethnic relations, and health and well-being? If so, our sociology program may be right for you. You can pursue a B.A. or B.S. degree in sociology or continue your learning by pursuing the accelerated bachelor's/graduate study plan, in which you receive a master's degree in sociology. The department offers graduate degrees at the master's and doctoral levels.

As a sociology major, you will explore complex issues of power, inequality, identity and conflict across a variety of different social groups and social institutions, such as schools, families and law enforcement. You will also learn to question common wisdoms, raise important questions, examine arguments, synthesize information, analyze data, make conclusions and present arguments supported by empirical research and sociological theory, both orally and in writing.

As part of your learning, you will be able to take advantage of outstanding facilities that include the Laboratory for Sociological Research, one of the largest facilities of its type in the world, and a statistics laboratory. You can also develop your own research project or collaborate with faculty members on a project and participate in department events, including guest speaker presentations and workshops.

Our electrical engineering graduate program is nationally recognized in areas like communication and electromagnetics, decision and control, electronic materials and devices, and power and energy systems. As an electrical engineering graduate student, you can work in outstanding labs and facilities at UofSC.

A graduate degree in electrical engineering can improve your career by equipping you to work on advanced projects or enabling you to transition to a new career in research or teaching.  Electrical Engineering at UofSC has advanced facilities, labs, computing and simulation infrastructure to allow students to carry out research activities.

We offer paid research assistantships and tuition for full-time Ph.D. students. Prospective students may also apply and receive national or international fellowships like the NSF Graduate Fellowship, National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, or fellowships from international entities and governments to support their Ph.D. program of study. M.S. students may also apply and receive very limited teaching assistantships or research assistantships, depending on the availability of funds. M.E. students are normally self-supported or supported by their governments, employers, or sponsors.

• Demonstrate the ability to conduct research, gather information, write clearly and correctly and present relevant news or persuasive information at a professional level.  
• Demonstrate the ability to think critically, creatively and independently  evaluate their own work and the work of others for accuracy, fairness, clarity, style and correctness.  
• Demonstrate an understanding the history of journalism and mass communications, the diversity of groups in a global society in relationship to communications and the role of journalism and mass communications in society.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical concepts, legal implications, considerations and practices that guide the mass media professions.  
• Demonstrate the ability to apply tools and technologies appropriate for the production, editing and presentation of visual, aural, textual or other media content.  
• Apply basic numerical and statistical concepts and methods appropriate for the communications professions. 

The bachelor of arts program in environmental studies has coursework that includes sustainability, policy and advocacy. The curriculum was significantly revised beginning in fall 2020 to include courses in environment and society, science and a skills class.
