Social work is a helping profession. The main goal of social work is to improve a society's overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Our students learn to work with individuals, couples, families, groups, neighborhoods, communities and organizations to empower them to meet their needs.

As a social work major, you can expect to develop skills in community organizing, diversity, social justice, networking, interviewing, multitasking, case management and grant-writing. You will also be able to gain hands-on experience in the field through service-learning that is integrated into academic coursework. You may also choose to pursue the Child Welfare Certificate and become certified in child welfare and receive a fellowship from the Department of Social Services.

The Master of Biomedical Engineering program builds deep technical skills through advanced coursework that uniquely combines engineering and biology. You will also learn important business skills by choosing the project management, entrepreneurship or technical track.

Emphasizing the interdisciplinary pursuit of comparative and/or international politics, the international studies program is designed to create the leaders of tomorrow. We allow students to tailor their programs of study to focus on such topics as foreign policy, global economic or environmental studies, or international conflict and cooperation.

As an international studies major, you will gain an understanding about how politics, government and governance shape the world and the quality of citizenship in the world. You will benefit from outstanding faculty members and challenging coursework that will help you develop critical learning skills, especially as related to the study of politics.

You will be able to focus on one or two fields within international studies, such as international security, international economics, U.S. foreign policy, global environmental politics, international human rights, Latin American studies, European studies, African studies, Asian studies and international development. You will also complete a public service internship to gain hands-on experience.

By building expertise in solid mechanics, materials processes, smart materials, manufacturing automation, concurrent engineering/design, sustainable design or thermofluid/energy sciences, students stand prepared to join the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industries in South Carolina and beyond.

As a mechanical engineering major, you will have the opportunity to work with a professor in research on some of today’s most notable engineering challenges. You will develop skills that will give you the ability to solve many of today’s world problems. Mechanical engineering majors will choose a concentration from design and manufacturing, engineering materials, mechanics of solids, thermal and fluid systems, and nuclear engineering.

Finance involves the study of business finance, investments and financial institutions. Students can specialize in corporate finance, investments or financial services.

The Finance Department in the Darla Moore School of Business is composed of outstanding faculty members and researchers whose interests include areas such as bank management, corporate restructuring, investment management, risk management, employee benefits and real estate finance. You will benefit from cutting-edge business knowledge and develop a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences. Through field trips to leading industries, service-learning opportunities and internships, you will be able to gain hands-on experience in the field.

As a history major, through in-depth analysis of the evolution of social, economics, cultural-intellectual and political patterns and events, you’ll develop an understanding of and appreciation for the life and development of various cultures, institutions and civilizations. You will become an expert at answering the questions “Who are we, and how did we get here?” You will learn how to situate yourself in the long continuum of human experience and how to find meaning in the past.

The skills you develop as a history major will give you the capacity to make the voices, stories and events of the past come alive and to give shape to the experiences and processes that have defined the interaction of humans with each other and with the world around them.

A selected number of history majors or minors spend their junior or senior year (or a spring or fall semester) at the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, while maintaining their normal progress toward graduation. Warwick has the United Kingdom’s second-highest-ranked history department

The art history program offers courses in ancient, medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, 18th-century, modern, American and Asian art, as well as architecture and film and photo history. General survey and special topics courses are offered every semester. Our faculty consists of dedicated teachers who are also nationally and internationally recognized scholars.

Through classroom instruction and additional research and internship opportunities students develop skills in visual analysis, historical understanding, critical thinking, research and writing, and intellectual and practical problem solving.

Our chemical engineering curriculum provides a strong foundation in the core areas of chemical engineering and prepares you for employment in industry or for graduate school. It integrates the study of engineering, chemistry, physics, computer modelling, health and safety. Optional concentrations allow you to specialize in an area of interest.

This professional degree provides coursework in criminal justice system operation, criminology, research methods, and statistics. The Arnold School offers two undergraduate degree programs in public health. While both programs share similar core requirements, the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree places more emphasis on social and behavioral sciences for entry into social science-based graduate programs such as law school.
