As a religious studies major, you will explore the many roles religion has played and continues to play both in society and in individual people's lives. Whether it is Zen monks, ancient Christian martyrs, Muslim and Jewish women, Hindu saints or Chinese philosophers, our courses introduce you to people and phenomena from all over the world. Learning about religion provides an opportunity to explore different cultures and develop a more global perspective.

Religious studies courses help to develop your critical-thinking abilities, your analytical reading and writing skills and your capacity for interpretation and comparison — abilities that are essential in every field of study. Through Maymester programs and study abroad opportunities, students have been able to travel to India, China, Japan, Greece, Turkey and elsewhere.

Some graduates also go on to receive their Master of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity in theology or pastoral ministry, but there is great need for those who understand the complex meanings of religion in global contexts across many fields.

Businesses and organizations need employees who can write and speak clearly, manage and solve problems and function creatively and effectively in the real world. Your liberal studies degree will prepare you for success in these critical areas through a multidisciplinary program you will design with an experienced advisor.

The studio art program offers two Bachelor degree options. As a studio art major, you will benefit from outstanding facilities and hands-on experience through internship and research opportunities.

    The B.A. in Studio Art is a general degree that allows students to explore many different mediums and, at 39 credit hours, is well suited for students who are interested in double majoring.

All B.F.A. undergraduate students will:

• Define and explain development of art, within their own and other cultures, from prehistory to the present.
• Critically analyze aspects of the design and art-making process and evaluate theories, philosophies and research in the practice of the studio arts.
• Through their artwork, demonstrate their competency of aesthetic literacy.
• Synthesize their learning from the curriculum into a final culminating experience within their chosen concentration.
• Have a solo exhibition of their creative research to be examined by the student’s major faculty.

As an international business major, you will develop leading-edge knowledge concerning the practice of global business.  

The department emphasizes the understanding of cross-border relationships — both within the same organization and across multiple organizations — comprising the modern multinational enterprise, as well as the institutional, financial, sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts surrounding the enterprise. International business majors have the opportunity to concentrate on business in Chinese enterprise, the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America or Central Europe.

As an international business major, you will benefit from challenging coursework, cutting-edge business knowledge and skills with a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences. You will also gain global opportunities, cultural awareness and language appreciation. You will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through study abroad, service learning and internships.

Our Chemical Engineering graduate program is ranked in the top 30 nationally by the National Research Council and ranked 14th nationally in federally funded chemical research and development by the National Science Foundation.

Chemical engineering at UofSC boasts state-of-the-art facilities, a dynamic faculty and rigorous research programs. Incentives for our Ph.D. candidates are the wide selection of research topics, full tuition waiver and high 12-month stipends. Full-time Ph.D. student stipends currently are in excess of $28,000 per year with tuition and partial health insurance support paid by the university. NSF Fellows and other students with similar fellowships can receive stipends totaling over $42,000 per year.

Around the world, people and places are intimately linked. Our flexible, interdisciplinary program is designed to engage students in pressing global questions, allowing you to develop a deeper understanding of the complex relationships and processes that connect the global community.

As a global studies major, you will focus on themes relating to globalization while learning to appreciate the world’s diversity. To achieve this end, this major requires students to focus on a particular world region and to attain proficiency in a modern foreign language.

Students in the Global Studies Program will focus on one of four themes: global health, global conflict and security, global sustainability and development, and global cultures. These themes, along with the major components around which the degree program is structured, will prepare students for careers where an understanding of urgent global issues is required, and where an ability to work with people from a variety of cultures is indispensable.

Finance involves the study of business finance, investments and financial institutions. Students can specialize in corporate finance, investments or financial services.

The Finance Department in the Darla Moore School of Business is composed of outstanding faculty members and researchers whose interests include areas such as bank management, corporate restructuring, investment management, risk management, employee benefits and real estate finance. You will benefit from cutting-edge business knowledge and develop a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences. Through field trips to leading industries, service-learning opportunities and internships, you will be able to gain hands-on experience in the field.

Social work is a helping profession. The main goal of social work is to improve a society's overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Our students learn to work with individuals, couples, families, groups, neighborhoods, communities and organizations to empower them to meet their needs.

As a social work major, you can expect to develop skills in community organizing, diversity, social justice, networking, interviewing, multitasking, case management and grant-writing. You will also be able to gain hands-on experience in the field through service-learning that is integrated into academic coursework. You may also choose to pursue the Child Welfare Certificate and become certified in child welfare and receive a fellowship from the Department of Social Services.

As a public relations major, you will develop strong writing and account management skills through interactive classes and extensive writing assignments. You'll learn how to create campaigns, write press releases and manage events as you develop your public relations acumen. You will work collaboratively with your classmates and be encouraged to participate activities like The Carolina Agency, our student-run advertising and public relations agency. You also have the opportunity to earn academic credit by participating in supervised internships. And as a senior in your capstone experience, you will create a comprehensive public relations campaign for an actual client. These real-life experiences will help prepare you for entry-level positions upon graduation.
