Do you see yourself working in media using a variety of skills to create content or to deliver information through different mediums? Through our undergraduate curriculum, you will gain a broad understanding of media and develop skills to be a well-rounded communicator.

Know you want a career in communications but aren't sure which part? That's OK. We'll help you identify your strengths and focus your interests. You'll gain broad insight into the communications industry and learn to recognize and analyze the media’s role in our society. You'll graduate with a deep intellectual understanding of the elements at work in the media today, and you'll be well rounded and media literate.

Emphasizing the interdisciplinary pursuit of comparative and/or international politics, the international studies program is designed to create the leaders of tomorrow. We allow students to tailor their programs of study to focus on such topics as foreign policy, global economic or environmental studies, or international conflict and cooperation.

As an international studies major, you will gain an understanding about how politics, government and governance shape the world and the quality of citizenship in the world. You will benefit from outstanding faculty members and challenging coursework that will help you develop critical learning skills, especially as related to the study of politics.

You will be able to focus on one or two fields within international studies, such as international security, international economics, U.S. foreign policy, global environmental politics, international human rights, Latin American studies, European studies, African studies, Asian studies and international development. You will also complete a public service internship to gain hands-on experience.

In an age of rapid changes in new knowledge and technologies, public health professionals require a broad education that emphasizes problem-solving skills and an understanding of ethical behavior. Students who are interested in the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program will receive a broad-based natural science curriculum, preparing those students for further study and natural and environmental public health sciences, medicine and other clinical professions.

Mechanical engineering graduate students can take advantage of small class sizes, excellent teaching, on-campus and off-campus delivery mechanisms and high-quality funded research at UofSC.

The graduate program in mechanical engineering at UofSC provides graduate students with opportunities to acquire a broad foundation of mechanical engineering knowledge, an in-depth research experience at the frontiers of mechanical engineering and skills for life-long learning and professional development. Our program is ranked #31 nationally, #7 in the Southern Region, and #1 in South Carolina by the National Research Council.

Have you ever thought of pairing linguistics and psychology? How about biological sciences and literature? By studying a broad range of subjects and designing a program that meets your specific needs, you can earn a college degree that can be applied in unique ways.

Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree program. The degree program is individually designed by each student along with a committee of at least four faculty members from the student's areas of interest.

Bachelor of Arts students tend to focus within the humanities, social sciences and fine arts. Fields of study might include Southern studies, Middle Eastern studies, performance arts management, environmental studies or linguistics.

Visual communicators tell stories. With a major in visual communications, you can learn to tell stories through photography, video, illustration, print publications or electronic design. Our core courses teach you the basics, and as you discover your talents, you choose the electives and out-of-classroom experiences that match your interests.

As a visual communications major, you will use the latest technology in a series of courses that emphasize multimedia production and writing. Later, you can apply your knowledge in an internship with an ad agency, public relations firm, newspaper or magazine, hone your skills and gain valuable hands-on experience in your visual communications specialty. As a senior, you will complete a capstone experience in which you will prepare a multimedia portfolio that will allow you to shine in a competitive job market.

Socrates believed that the unexamined life is not worth living. Our philosophy department helps students examine the world, especially human practices and institutions, in an effort to gain understanding and wisdom.  

Philosophy majors have a wide range of educational opportunities. The department emphasizes analytical reasoning both for general education and as a preparation for pre-law students.

As a philosophy major, you will work with outstanding faculty members who promote study opportunities both at the university and overseas. You will learn how to reason analytically and develop the ability to argue persuasively. Your courses will promote reflection on either the historical developments in philosophy or ethical values as they relate to business, engineering, morality, politics and social justice. You may also choose to pursue research opportunities in nanotechnology.

Weekly composition seminars include analysis and discussion between students and guest composers, performers and conductors, open rehearsals and visits by artists from other disciplines. Students profit from frequent visits by noted guest composers.

You also benefit from our rich musical resources, including two advanced computer music studios and our extensive music library collection. You are encouraged to take advantage of the diverse resources throughout the university and to collaborate with artists in other fields.

At the end of each term, student composers present their work at the New Voices concert, open to the public. This student-produced concert series is designed to stimulate compositional activity and educate composers in practical matters of concert production, publicity and artistic collaboration.

• All BFA Studio Art undergraduate students will define and explain development of art, within their own and other cultures, from pre-history to the present.
• All BFA Studio Art undergraduate students will critically analyze aspects of the design and art making process and evaluate theories, philosophies, and research in the practice of the studio arts.
• All BFA Studio Art undergraduate students will, through their artwork, demonstrate their competency of aesthetic literacy.
