Our criminal justice program promotes state-of-the-art research and instruction in subject areas that are crucial to the effective and orderly working of modern society.

You will learn theories of and responses to social deviance, law and the legal system, administration theory and evaluation, law enforcement, juvenile justice systems and procedures, and crime prevention models. You will also be able to attend numerous conferences and lectures to broaden your professional perspective.

As a criminal justice major, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on internship experience that will add to your educational experience. You can gain additional experience by participating in the Campus Patrol Office program, which offers students who qualify an opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an employee of the University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety. Social work is a helping profession. The main goal of social work is to improve a society's overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Our students learn to work with individuals, couples, families, groups, neighborhoods, communities and organizations to empower them to meet their needs.

As a social work major, you can expect to develop skills in community organizing, diversity, social justice, networking, interviewing, multitasking, case management and grant-writing. You will also be able to gain hands-on experience in the field through service-learning that is integrated into academic coursework. You may also choose to pursue the Child Welfare Certificate and become certified in child welfare and receive a fellowship from the Department of Social Services.

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program at the University of South Carolina promotes an understanding of the experiences of women and other underrepresented groups through a complete program of teaching, research, and service to the University, the local community, the state, the nation and the global community. Through its research mission, the program reconceptualizes knowledge, creates new knowledge, and reinterprets existing knowledge through the lens of gender and the prism of diversity. Its teaching mission is to share this knowledge with students so that they learn to think critically, to communicate effectively, to solve problems, and to interpret human experience. Emerging from an activist tradition, the program serves University, local, state, national and global communities by acting as a resource and guide for issues related to women and gender. Our research, teaching, and service missions interweave as we create, share, and apply the knowledge, skills, and values that promote the full participation of women and other underrepresented groups in society.

As a geography major, you will take courses in computer cartography, GIS and air photo interpretation/remote sensing. You will also have ample opportunities to study the Earth’s physical features and processes and how this physical environment is modified by human activities. Students may choose to take courses that include the real-world collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of geographic data to prepare you for careers in geography.

Geography undergraduate students may choose one of four tracks to focus on: physical/environmental geography, human/economic geography, geographic information science and general geography.

As an international business major, you will develop leading-edge knowledge concerning the practice of global business.  

The department emphasizes the understanding of cross-border relationships — both within the same organization and across multiple organizations — comprising the modern multinational enterprise, as well as the institutional, financial, sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts surrounding the enterprise. International business majors have the opportunity to concentrate on business in Chinese enterprise, the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America or Central Europe.

As an international business major, you will benefit from challenging coursework, cutting-edge business knowledge and skills with a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences. You will also gain global opportunities, cultural awareness and language appreciation. The B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences is a major designed for students who intend to pursue the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) at the USC College of Pharmacy. Students must be accepted into the Pharm.D. program at the USC College of Pharmacy their junior or senior year to meet the requirements for the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences is awarded at the end of the spring semester of the second year in the Pharm.D. program.
The sequencing of the required math and science courses is particularly important for ensuring that all prerequisites can be completed before entering the Pharm.D. program.

A graduate degree in electrical engineering can improve your career by equipping you to work on advanced projects or enabling you to transition to a new career in research or teaching.  Electrical Engineering at UofSC has advanced facilities, labs, computing and simulation infrastructure to allow students to carry out research activities.

We offer paid research assistantships and tuition for full-time Ph.D. students. Prospective students may also apply and receive national or international fellowships like the NSF Graduate Fellowship, National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, or fellowships from international entities and governments to support their Ph.D. program of study. M.S. students may also apply and receive very limited teaching assistantships or research assistantships, depending on the availability of funds. M.E. students are normally self-supported or supported by their governments, employers, or sponsors.

The ability to comprehend and communicate in diverse languages not only prepares our students to understand the history and traditions of our own culture but also equips them to be active and engaged representatives in the global economy and world affairs. The major in languages, with its multiple and flexible tracks, is vital for the preparation of the next generation of citizens and leaders.

Undergraduate students who choose a language concentration will be able to demonstrate intermediate to advanced level proficiency in their target language(s). They will be able to evaluate and discuss literary and cultural texts, or linguistic documents, and advance arguments effectively through strong writing and research skills. Students will gain a greater understanding of the significance of the sociopolitical structures and intellectual and literary/artistic contributions of the target culture and language sphere. They'll also be able to recognize, describe and reflect upon the cultural practices that shape social interactions in the target culture. Students who choose a PK-12 teaching certification concentration will also be well-prepared to begin a career teaching their chosen language.

Civil engineering is the planning, design and construction of projects that define our civilization. Civil engineers have built landmarks that now stand as tributes to the profession's creative spirit and ingenuity.

Civil engineers analyze, plan, design, and build structures such as buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels and roads. They create infrastructure systems for personal and mass transportation. Their work contributes to the management of water resources and natural hazard protection. They provide for environmental control and remediation of both the natural and constructed environment. Civil engineers also manage urban planning and public works projects, perform air quality monitoring and plan and design waste collection and handling systems.
