Graduate programs in civil and environmental engineering provide students with expertise in a subfield of civil and environmental engineering, an opportunity for an in-depth research experience at the frontiers of these fields, and skills for life-long learning and professional development. Our research projects stem from many areas of civil and environmental engineering and are often conducted by multidisciplinary teams and researchers of different backgrounds.

Civil engineering is everywhere: the buildings in which we live and work, the roads on which we travel, the water we drink, the bridges we cross. Civil engineering is the planning, design and construction of projects that define our civilization. Civil engineers have built landmarks that now stand as tributes to the profession's creative spirit and ingenuity.

Civil engineers analyze, plan, design, and build structures such as buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels and roads. They create infrastructure systems for personal and mass transportation. Their work contributes to the management of water resources and natural hazard protection. They provide for environmental control and remediation of both the natural and constructed environment. Civil engineers also manage urban planning and public works projects, perform air quality monitoring and plan and design waste collection and handling systems.

In an age of rapid changes in new knowledge and technologies, public health professionals require a broad education that emphasizes problem-solving skills and an understanding of ethical behavior. The Arnold School offers two undergraduate degree programs in public health. While both programs share similar core requirements, the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree places more emphasis on social and behavioral sciences for entry into social science-based graduate programs such as law school.

• Graduates of the program will have an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors

• Graduates of the program will have an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
• Graduates of the program will have an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
• Graduates of the program will have an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions

A graduate degree in electrical engineering may improve your career by equipping you to work on advanced projects or enabling you to transition to a new career in research or teaching. Our master's degrees in electrical engineering prepare students for specialized and supervisory positions in a variety of work environments, and our doctoral degree prepares students for academia and high-level research and development jobs. All of our graduate programs cultivate the next generation of leaders in academia and industry.

Are you interested in learning about some of the most pressing social issues of the day, such as immigration, discrimination, economic and social inequality, demographic change, race and ethnic relations, and health and well-being? If so, our sociology program may be right for you. You can pursue a B.A. or B.S. degree in sociology or continue your learning by pursuing the accelerated bachelor's/graduate study plan, in which you receive a master's degree in sociology. The department offers graduate degrees at the master's and doctoral levels.

As a sociology major, you will explore complex issues of power, inequality, identity and conflict across a variety of different social groups and social institutions, such as schools, families and law enforcement. You will also learn to question common wisdoms, raise important questions, examine arguments, synthesize information, analyze data, make conclusions and present arguments supported by empirical research and sociological theory, both orally and in writing.

As part of your learning, you will be able to take advantage of outstanding facilities that include the Laboratory for Sociological Research, one of the largest facilities of its type in the world, and a statistics laboratory. You can also develop your own research project or collaborate with faculty members on a project and participate in department events, including guest speaker presentations and workshops.

The College of Engineering and Computing offers the South Carolina's only aerospace engineering program, including a Master of Engineering (M.E.) and Masters of Science (M.S.) in Aerospace Engineering.

Graduate study in aerospace engineering affords the opportunity to enhance critical thinking and mathematical prowess, skills that are transferable to career advancement in research, design and application work environments. Plus, those with graduate degrees in aerospace engineering generally have a higher income than those with just an undergraduate engineering degree.

Aerospace engineering graduate degrees include the Master of Engineering (M.E.), which is perceived to be more practically oriented, and the Master of Science (M.S.), which is considered more scholarly or fundamental and includes a thesis.

Programs of study for both the M.S. and M.E. in Aerospace Engineering include coursework in five core areas:

• Aeroelasticity
• Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics
• Aerospace Structures
• Composite Materials
• Finite Element Analysis

Additional electives allow students to concentrate their studies in the mechanics, materials, and flight aspects of aerospace engineering.

The studio art program offers two Bachelor degree options. As a studio art major, you will benefit from outstanding facilities and hands-on experience through internship and research opportunities.

    The B.A. in Studio Art is a general degree that allows students to explore many different mediums and, at 39 credit hours, is well suited for students who are interested in double majoring.

All B.F.A. undergraduate students will:

• Define and explain development of art, within their own and other cultures, from prehistory to the present.
• Critically analyze aspects of the design and art-making process and evaluate theories, philosophies and research in the practice of the studio arts.
• Through their artwork, demonstrate their competency of aesthetic literacy.
• Synthesize their learning from the curriculum into a final culminating experience within their chosen concentration.
• Have a solo exhibition of their creative research to be examined by the student’s major faculty.

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary program highly focused on the improvement of human health, combining the innovative skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve health care from diagnostics to treatment.

As a biomedical engineering major, you will develop the ability to identify, formulate and solve open-ended problems at the interface of engineering and medicine using skills acquired in mathematics; biological, chemical and physical sciences; and engineering. You will also learn how to communicate technical material, function on a multidisciplinary team, demonstrate professional and ethical responsibility, continue along a path of lifelong learning, and recognize economic, social and global issues related to the profession.

You will enjoy courses with hands-on laboratory components as well as a senior capstone design sequence, during which you will work on problems defined by doctors or biomedical engineering industries. You will also be encouraged to get involved with research opportunities.

We were the first major university to create a separate department for the study of sport and entertainment management in a business curriculum. As a national leader, we continue to offer innovative academic programs to prepare you for your role in this exciting field.

Our challenging coursework will provide you a thorough grounding in the economics, accounting, finance and marketing aspects of the sport and entertainment industries.

Two required internships in your chosen field will allow you to enter the industry with exceptional knowledge and professional preparation. Our strong alumni network will give you the opportunity to interact with industry professionals on a regular basis and provide the support you need to confidently assume leadership positions. You also can expand your educational experience by attending conferences, participating in industry events and taking advantage of opportunities for study abroad.
