Overview

Economics majors in the College of Arts and Sciences may earn the B.S. by completing the 24-hour major requirement along with the college core, distribution requirements and cultural-awareness and writing-emphasis requirements as described in the basic degree requirements in liberal arts.

In addition to courses within your major, students in the College of Arts and Sciences must fulfill a cognate or minor. The cognate is intended to support the course work in the major, and it must consist of 12 hours of courses at the advanced level, outside of but related to, the major. In place of the cognate, B.A. students can choose a minor consisting of at least 18 credit hours of prescribed courses.

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

You will develop a broad base of skills in chemistry, plant and animal science, cellular and molecular biology, ecology and evolution. As a chemistry major, you will be exposed to outstanding undergraduate research opportunities, which open a new world of career opportunities for students. You will be able to take courses in popular fields such as environmental, forensic and aquatic chemistry. South Carolina is blessed with a coast full of beautiful beaches as well as estuaries and tidal areas teeming with marine life. Take advantage of hands-on learning opportunities that allow you to participate in a multitude of research experiences along our precious coast and around the world.

As a marine science major, you will obtain interdisciplinary knowledge in marine science as well as core knowledge in an area of emphasis chosen from among biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, geological oceanography or coastal resource management and marine policy.

You will be exposed to real field experiences during an early summer course where you may spend three full weeks at the Baruch Institute at North Inlet Estuary in Georgetown, S.C. The Baruch Institute is an internationally acclaimed research laboratory with the main building of the complex comprising 18 air-conditioned research laboratories, a computer center, a seminar room and more.

Back on campus, you will be exposed to challenging coursework with laboratory components. To enhance your educational experience, you will be encouraged to get involved with faculty research projects and participate in activities such as marine science seminars and recruiting visits by industry and government organizations.

If so, our sociology program may be right for you. You can pursue a B.A. or B.S. degree in sociology or continue your learning by pursuing the accelerated bachelor's/graduate study plan, in which you receive a master's degree in sociology. The department offers graduate degrees at the master's and doctoral levels.

As a sociology major, you will explore complex issues of power, inequality, identity and conflict across a variety of different social groups and social institutions, such as schools, families and law enforcement. You will also learn to question common wisdoms, raise important questions, examine arguments, synthesize information, analyze data, make conclusions and present arguments supported by empirical research and sociological theory, both orally and in writing.

    The B.A. in Studio Art is a general degree that allows students to explore many different mediums and, at 39 credit hours, is well suited for students who are interested in double majoring.

All B.F.A. undergraduate students will:

  • Define and explain development of art, within their own and other cultures, from prehistory to the present.
  • Critically analyze aspects of the design and art-making process and evaluate theories, philosophies and research in the practice of the studio arts.
